A Long Haul

As rain becomes our weather forecast du jour, I've traded in my bike for my hiking boots. Not that I'm hiking, per se, just out walking, but they're comfortable and relatively waterproof.

The other day, I walked the entire dike and back, not knowing how far it was from beginning to end. Well, finding out the hard way, by walking it with 'map my ride' keeping track on my phone, it turns out it's 3.31km round trip. I know that's not very far, but due to really painful knees, it can seem like forever. It certainly did on the return.

I thought about turning the map my ride app on to find out where 1km was then turn around at that point. This morning, heading out early as usual, I decided that rather than walk the entire dike and be exhausted and in agony for the rest of that day and the next, I'd walk out for 20 minutes, then turn around and come back. Was it 1km? I have no idea as my phone was dead this morning.

It doesn't really matter whether it was 1km or not. I figure if I walk out for 20 min, next week maybe I'll find that 20 minutes takes me a little bit further. Today it took me to the first grove of trees, so next week, maybe to the end of the grove of trees, or perhaps the second grove of trees.

As long as I keep walking on a consistent basis, I should be able to do the entire dike and back by the end of November. Granted, it will probably take me longer than 20 minutes, but I'm hoping by then that my knees won't be protesting so much.

No wonder I prefer biking. It takes me just as long to ride my bike 9 miles as it does to walk 2km. However, I need to use other muscle groups, and I've always loved walking. Besides, I'm not crazy about riding my bike in the rain - only because I don't think it's good for it's working parts. Me? I don't care if I get wet, as there's nothing better than a hot shower and warm fleece when I get home.

Onward with my fitness goals. Not having done a lot of walking this summer, walking along the dike sure felt like a long haul. Looking forward to the day when it seems easy!

Another vaccine enters human trials. This one backed by Bill & Melissa Gates

This one is based on a DNA plasmid.

The first one happened in mid-March in Seattle, which more likely was protein based.

From The Hill;

And hopefully there will be another one available sooner.
For instance, the Canadian one was in the lead, but I haven't seen anything on this recently.
Perhaps results are not ready yet.

5 Reasons Women Live Longer Than Men

“Men are biologically and sociologically at a disadvantage from the time they’re conceived to the time they die,” says Marianne Legato, MD, professor emerita of clinical medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and founder and director of the Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine. Here’s why:

Females are tougher in utero
Two and a half as many boys are conceived as girls, Dr. Legato says, but they’re so much more likely to succumb to prenatal infection or other issues in the womb that by the time they’re born, the ratio is close to one to one. “They’re also slower to develop physically than girls prenatally, which means they’re more likely to die if they are preemies due to underdeveloped lung or brain development,” Dr. Legato explains.

Women are less likely to be daredevils
Unintentional injuries are the third leading cause of death in men, according to the CDC; for women it’s only the sixth. Again, you can blame it on biology: The frontal lobes of the brain—which deal with responsibility and risk calculation—develop much more slowly in males than females, Dr. Legato says.

The result: Guys often take many more risks (which you probably already realize if your small son has taken one too many spins off his bike handlebars). “Almost inevitably, a male will take risks that a woman of his same age wouldn’t take,” Dr. Legato says.

Women succumb to heart disease later
Heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women, but men are more likely to develop it—and die from it—as early as their 30s and 40s. Women, on the other hand, typically develop heart disease 10 years later than men. They’re protected from it until menopause, since their bodies churn out estrogen, which helps keep arteries strong and flexible, says Dr. Legato.

Women have stronger social networks
Friends make good medicine: People with strong social connections have a 50% lower chance of dying than those with few social ties, according to a 2010 study at Brigham Young University. “Most men tend to hold their stress and worries close to their chest, while women tend to reach out and talk to others,” Dr. Legato explains. The one exception: married men, which also explains why so many studies show that they’re likely to be healthier and live longer.

Women take better care of their health
Men are 24% less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year and are 22% more likely to skip out on cholesterol testing, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. In fact more than a quarter (28%) of men don’t have a regular physician and about one in five didn’t have health insurance in 2012, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

You can blame it on the so-called John Wayne syndrome: “Men often deny illness; they minimize symptoms because they don’t want to go to a doctor and find out something is wrong,” Dr. Legato notes.

The Cause of Cataracts and HOW to prevent and heal the damage.

Did you know that our eyes work similar to those of cats only not as prominent?

Embedded image from another site

Using this picture, you can clearly see how wide cat's pupils open up.
Well ladies and gentlemen human eyes are not that much different. Our eyes are designed to also see at night in the dark. How else were our Ancestors able to peruse the world at night? I mean thats why pirates wore eye patches so that one eye would be able to see into the night, removing the patch during night time, or so I read they would cover their 'day eye' at night.

So how does this night vision relate to cataracts?
Well during the daytime your eyes go into 'relaxation mode', the pupil relaxes during the day. Because it requires less effort to maintain vision throughout the day, the pupil is essentially the heart of night vision, because it naturally determines the amount of light required to provide you vision of your environment.

So what would create unbalance in this natural order of one's own eyes? Sunglasses?
Well its simple if you wear sunglasses during the day you are simulating a night environment. So the pupils in your eyes are forced to expand, excuse the pun but it doesnt happen over night. It occurs over long periods of time. So if you are wearing sunglasses during the day right up until night then the pupils are forced to remain in a similar state until next light, BEFORE you return the glasses again.

So now that you know the cause here are the means to prevent further harm/daamage of your eyes.
Stop wearing sunglassesfrustrated

How to heal?
There are four solutions:
1 - Watching a sunrise but watching before the sun appears beyond the horizon is key. Keep staring until the sun does aappear, if you feel a burn sensation that is your eyes working out, to sustain that relaxed state position. Like any muscle in your body don't over do it.

2 - If you find the mornings are often cloudy then use sunglasses and stare into the sun at its highest peak which is the apex of the sky. I know its a contradiction. However if you are literally staring into the heart of the sun then you are creating the eyes to go into a relaxed state with the sunglasses on. OR if its a cloudy day during the lunch hour look up. Cloudy days are not as useful as peering into the sun with sunglasses

3 - Staring into a lightbult (NOT the pulsating halogen) while on, will achieve the same effect. The brighter the light the better, and you will achieve the same results covered in solution No. 1. Not as affective as No.1 But achieves the same result regardless

There is a 4th just unsure its validity of it where it invloves a Gazebo with filtered walls to allow a certain amount of sun in.

Thanks for reading

I got dilated today...

Eye exam. Originally scheduled for last year, pushed back as the doctor decided to take a holiday vacation. No cataracts, no signs of glaucoma. The blurred vision is because my left eye is weaker than the right and my standard glasses need to be changed.
I left the office with disposable sunglasses as blurred vision was at maximum. Good thing the vision center was only a mile from my home. I took the day off from work and it was a good thing as I had a splitting headache and couldn't focus for a few hours.
It was dark 7 hours later when I went grocery shopping and bright lights from car headlights had a slight blue 'edge' when I blinked. I'm thinking that was a reaction from the eye drops.
Hopefully, I'll be back in business tomorrow.

Aspirin Is Good For Your Skin..2

The Recipe
The ingredients are simple, easily available and cost next to nothing. You will need: 5 aspirin tablets (not the effervescent kind), about a tablespoon of natural organic honey and natural white yogurt.
Step 1
First, put the aspirin tablets inside a small plastic bag or sandwich bag. Using the bottom of a glass, crush the tablets inside the bag until they form a white powder. The bag will prevent the powder from spreading everywhere!
Step 2
Next, take the honey and yogurt and mix them together. When they’re fully mixed, add in the powder from the aspirin Before putting on the mask, remember to wash your face and remove any makeup or makeup residue. In order to prep your skin and get it ready for application, put a warm washcloth on your face. The heat will dilate your pores so the mask will penetrate the skin for a maximized effect! When applying to your face, take care to avoid the eye area.
Step 3
The aspirin mask should be left to rest for at least 20-30 minutes. When the time is up, rinse thoroughly with warm water to completely remove the mask. You’re done!
Warnings
There are some things to remember when using an aspirin mask. The preparation contains a chemical element, therefore should not be used more than two or three times a month. We also recommend that you do it in the evening. In addition to regenerating you skin, treat yourself to a moment of relaxation and tranquility before bedtime. In the days after the treatment, it’s recommended to protect your face from the sun with sunscreen. Finally, it seems obvious to say, but those suffering from an allergy to this chemical should absolutely NOT do this treatment.
It’s Not Just For Your Face! This particular beauty treatment DIY has special benefits: it not only works by invigorating the skin, but helps to heal imperfections, such as scars and blemishes. In addition, the application can also be done on other parts of the body: elbows, armpits and knees are the most likely targets. Aspirin is not just good for your headaches, but for your beauty, too!

Dealing With Stress

Although I'd promised myself to do more walking, this morning found me out on my bike again. As it wasn't raining or windy, I chose to hop on my bike and do my usual 9 mile circuit. As usual, the not raining lasted only until it started getting lighter, which, today, was about half a block.

I thought of turning around and putting the bike away and then thought, to heck with it, I'll ride anyway. At first it was only a light sprinkling, hardly requiring a hood, so off I went, enjoying the feel of the rain on my cheeks. The rain was intermittently heavier at times, requiring me to put my hood up and down like a cheap hooker's drawers. (That's a joke, so for those who want to be offended, you might want to stop reading here).

I haven't been on my bike all week, and I've really missed my 'route'. The mama cow and calf are not in the pasture anymore, so I'm guessing they're either inside, or perhaps they're in a different field. Riding down the gravel road near the reservation, brilliant red blueberry bushes stretch for acres on my right, while the scent of the recently harvested Brussel sprouts fills the air on my left.

Down the tree lined dirt road towards the old ferry landing, yellow leaves still cling to bare branches, predecessors covering the road in a thick, glossy brown carpet. No crunching through leaves today. Instead, the soft whir of tires over soggy leaves. Clouds hang low over the surrounding mountains, sucking the brilliant colour from the landscape, wisps floating low over farmlands.

Rain has started in earnest by now, soaking my bike seat every time I dismount for a photo. Embers of an untended fire burn hot and low, smoke drifting west with the wind. A stack of pallets awaits their turn next to the glowing fire.

Returning home, my wet clothes go into the dryer while I pull on a warm pair of fleece pants and sweatshirt. I really needed the bike ride after a super stressful three weeks. I had transferred a significant amount of money from my PayPal account to my bank account on Oct 9 - and it never showed up in my bank account. When it didn't show up, I contacted them every single day, and received no satisfactory answer at all. In fact, I got told to go to my bank, which is 4 hours drive away (there and back), and find out what happened to it.

So I did. When I get there, my banks says, not our problem. We don't have it - it originated with PayPal and they're the ones that have to look for it. So time wasted along with gas, and I return home, still without my $$ and still no answer as to where it is.

Phoning every single day and ranting at them about my money, and two weeks later they finally tell me it's their issue, and there was a 'bug' in the system and the engineers are working on it. They tell me the money will be in my account Nov 1 - three weeks later. So come Nov 1, nope, no money. By this time, I'm furious. So more phone calls, and they finally tell me, no they can't tell me when the money will be in my account. They can't tell me whether 50 or 500 people were affected.

This morning, the money finally shows up - over three weeks later! I demanded compensation and they have ponied up with it, but it doesn't make up for the stress and time spent having to deal with their bs. Although, I'm relieved to have it in my account.

On a more positive note, I'm receiving more and more requests for my calendar. So my initial forecast is going to be totally off. I'm in a Christmas Craft Fair on Nov 16-18 and have requested and been granted permission to sell my calendars at the craft fair. Yes!!!

Now that I can focus on the calendar again, instead of PayPal, I have to choose and get the photos laid out this weekend and get a webpage up for the calendar pre-orders, then get enough product made for the craft show.

Amazing how lackadaisical PayPal was with MY money. If the tables had been reversed, we all know it would have been a different story.

LVNV murderer.....

No using his name as he would like us all to do so. Every one is scrambling to find explanatory dirt on this crumb, focusing on Mental Health. Dead ends all around---substance abuse, family, trauma, recent loss, and so on. But lots of folks can present with high functioning lifestyles, while resentment/confusion simmer deep down. Two common sources of this predominate. Of course, some can have undiagnosed (even not yet categorized) genetic or environmental syndromes, which may have few physical or functional signs, and well hidden behavioral/emotional issues. Then there are those who experienced severe early childhood mistreatment. In both cases, there is the issue of resilience, whereby some so afflicted carry on with only minor challenges. And intelligence, which can provide enormous chances at apparent daily adaptability. The numbers of such potential time bombs isn't known, but few make it into the MH system for identification and diagnosis/help. And the best shrinks could spend hours with such types, and be clueless. But in the right hands, detailed neuropsychological testing can help. The squeaky wheel, people. Aa.

Why Do It Hurt So Much

When you boot a guy in the testicles?

Its simple really, the testicles are actually internal organs like the kidney or liver. They start off up inside the body until a certain age when they drop down into the scrotum outside of the body. The reason they wind up in the scrotum is that they require a temperature lower than the internal body temperature to do what they do without being too hot.

Why is the testicles being an internal organ matter?

Internal organs are highly sensitive, thats why we evolved to have our organs inside and protected. Have anyone ever been jabbed in the side and it hit the kidney? It is its own special kind of pain that is just indescribable.

Just imagine if that kidney is outside the body with just a layer of skin for protection and someone drawed off and boot you. You get a idea of what kind of pain we are talking about. Same deal with the testicles.
