The Rhodesian Ridgeback

Its one thing to hear of all the protective qualities etc. of the Ridge-back, but to actually experience how they will fight and even die for what they believe is theirs is phenomenal.
I don't want a dog that enjoys killing another dog or is so anti-social that sometimes you are not sure about the neighbors safety.
I have great respect for these level headed though highly intelligent dogs.
My neighbor (ex Rhodesian) told me how her grandfather used them for their courage while Lion hunting on the farm. Simply the best for a loyal farm dog.

Pretty good science behind it....No?....

....for those who consider psychology as science. But even in so called lower life forms, phylogenically downward from mammals, it seems that behaviorally shaping behaviors ("training"), with awards, works best if the latter are applied in random fashions. I certainly notice it with all my dogs, and kitties, and with most women, but I digress. So, Bravo learned to roll over, by gradually shaping behaviors he already displayed. Rubbing his ears onto new snow, with praise and rewards, soon becomes a complete roll over. Soon, response to command only. Then random rewards. A hoot to watch, but random assignments of reward stimuli do seem to bring quicker results. Women? Peace be upon the sweet little hind sides of each and every one. Well, anecdotally, the bangles and baubles also follow the rule of random assignments of rewards. But it all begs the question of why. Why randomness? What evolutionary selective advantages, other than possibly those following the Vierk conservation of baubles hypothesis? And how does it apply to the training of men, by those crafty ladies? A few CS men, and women, may know. Major caveat, it definitely doesn't seem to work with that foxy hottie, our very own brilliant Lady Cyberscrutinizer. Sadly so. She demands rewards after every trick. The art is not easy.

Most grounded/honest women get it, but all real men do.

So, my neighbor asks me to come along with her, for winter to summer tire change. It's a Maine climate, and woman with knuckle dragging mechanic sort of thing. Now, this lady, also Mom of our twins, for whom I bought the home next door when we split up, (how's that for scummy virtue signalling?), began her nursing career as a diploma RN. Three years of intensive work/training, no academic degree, but life in the student dorm connected to the horsepital, where you could be called in at any time to help out and learn. No more such programs, all now lead to parchment, and almost no practical knowledge. But these ladies (no men) all taught us how really to get to know and to care for patients. First try emergent IV access, when even the surgeons can't get in. Nuff said.
So after years as a triage RN in casualty, she completes training as a nurse practitioner. Point is, she's tough, and tolerates fools like me, but few others. We could never be an item again, but are pals, and loving coparents. Mutual support, based on life skills, is the message
So why would she feel she need's me along for something as 'routine' as a tire rotation? During the act, I'm out sniffing with Bravo. He the grass, me the dames. She calls us back in to the garage. Seems like the tech suggests the need for addition of a 50 USD rim part, which corrosion made necessary. Car with close to 300K Km. Silly issue. Mean Tire Pressure Sensor valve--oh yeah, it's too hard to just look at the tire to see if air is needed. New cars. I inspect the part, and the rim, and agree. But I digress.
So, they finish the job, and on driving away, super nursie notices an idiot light on, signaling a faulty MTPS valve. The same rim onto which the aftermarket part was installed. She proudly returns into the fray, telling me that she can handle it without us. But they try to shuck 'n jive her, Obama/Biden style, claiming these things "always tend to work themselves out by just a little driving". They can, but rarely do. She tries to differ, but finally gets me for backup. Bravo and I enter (do 50+ Kg ears back GSD's ever help in such things?), and I sense the dynamic. Three gruff men onto one pretty petite girl. So I lecture these three grease monkey unshaven arseholes about the differences betweem OEM and aftermarket replacement parts, how removing the rim and tire, and repositioning the valve stem, then resetting the idiot light with the port connecterd computed monitor---usually works. And I threaten to call the manager. And corporate. They all back down, do as I suggest, and problem solved.
Any ladies ever been there? Any real men out there? Did I just make all this up?

How Wolves Change Rivers and Landscape

When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in the United States after being absent nearly 70 years, the most remarkable "trophic cascade" occurred. What is a trophic cascade and how exactly do wolves change rivers? George Monbiot explains in this movie remix.

Back from leaf raking on all 4,000 hectares...

...Not bad for completing the job in only 2 hours. And now watching the Austin, Texas Grand Prix, where that girly sissy Hamilton and his rust bucket Mercedes is in the lead, AGAIN! But on to more important things. While checking my wash in the spacious basement of the Vierk mansion number 6, I notice a cricket on the wall. Mid sized---3 cm. I check my books from the masters training in medical entomology, and confirm that my little friend is of the order Orthoptera, family Gryllidae. But nowhere can I get help on what to do with him/her. as soon the Maine winter will be upon us, and I'm covering the boat with a tarp today. Being on the ocean, the season is much milder than many would think. But still, oh ye CS Menschen, winter is winter. So, do I gently place this bug outside, hoping that somehow it will aid his/her species survival. Or leave her/him to face fate with all those fearsome spiders in the cellar. Who has the answer?

I was rewarded deerly !

This morning I played softball.
I had a good time and went 2 for 3 at the plate, plus a walk, and I scored twice,
which equaled my activity last night. grin

When the game ended it was hot, about 88 F. and muggy.
I stopped by an Aldi store on the way home to get several food items,
plus I got some chocolate ice cream. applause

When I got home, I sat in front of a fan and had some of that ice cream,
while watching a Mets baseball game. After the game was over, I decided to go visit
a park where I have local deer becoming familiar with me. I've photographed them
about 8 times and each time they become more tolerant of my presence.
Today was the best though. At first, I couldn't find any of the deer.
Because it was hot out, I figured they were probably lying down somewhere in the woods.

So, instead, I took pictures of a green dragonfly and a blue jay, that I found.
But, I kept looking out for the deer. Eventually, I found one buck. He was alone, but luckily, he was familiar with me and allowed me to take photos of him at close range.
He usually hangs out with another buck about his age, about 4 years old.
The bucks have their antlers growing behind felt right now.

I was following him, walking parallel to his foraging and eventually I was leading him in the same direction. I sat down awaiting him to catch up (he was busy eating leaves from a small tree at the time. I was near the edge of the woods in a field looking out at him.

All of a sudden, to my surprise, 2 tiny fawn walked out of the woods and went just past me on my left, only about 5 feet from me. They looked right at me and didn't seem to mind that I was there. Perhaps they had been watching me and the buck from the woods. Either way, I got lots of great very close photos of them looking at me, preening each other, and foraging.

After about 40 photos, the 2 fawn decided to lie down in the shade together between some small evergreens, while the buck kept foraging.
I took several more photos of them lying down, and then decided to leave them be.
I didn't want to overstay my welcome. But, it was terrific to be so accepted by the little ones and the buck, perhaps their father.

I hope I'll get to see them again and see them grow up over time.

How do you know when a monkey is mad?

A "threat" face (open mouth, ears and forehead forward, presumed to be the expression for anger, when a monkey is threatening others)...
