Travel

I used to love to travel. Canada, Australia, Africa, America, Europe, been there (bits of) and done that (most of). I still like exploring new places, but the problem is getting there.

Flying is pure misery. I've got long legs, I'm claustrophobic, and I hate crowds. Being wedged in a cramped seat a mile above the ground in a metal tube with a few hundred people is about as close to hell as I hope to get. Chomping valium like smarties is all very well but seriously messes up the first day or two of the holiday.

I never felt the urge to go on a sea cruise. Being trapped in a hotel which is bobbing up and down doesn’t immensely appeal.

And I live on an island. There's only so far cars and trains will get me. Yes, I know there's a tunnel to Europe. See claustrophobic, above.

Failing friendly aliens, transport I will have to wait patiently for the invention of an effective and efficient teleporter. One which doesn’t need to be checked for flies or for that matter cockroaches or any other life form that could be incorporated into my DNA.

Planning a vacation...

I'm planning a vacation for sometime in April to see my brother in Dayton, Ohio.
If I do the scenic route and go by car, part of me says catch a few winks every 4 or 5 hours and drive through. Maybe when I was single and younger that was a good idea. I'll allow 2 days travel with a hotel the first night. It would be convenient as I can bring lots of clothing, laptop and some model helicopters.

My stay in Dayton would be as short as 4 days because I'm using 4 days travel time.

There is a possibility to do a few stops like dinner in Atlanta or a stop in Nashville to see a museum with something related to music.
With tolls and current gasoline prices, I estimate the trip to be approximately $1,200 to $1,400
There is merit in that thought...

The other option is to go by plane.
Uber to the airport is about the same as parking. I prefer the parking.
Most flights have 1 stop and travel time of 6 hours.
My brother or niece would be the chauffeur during my stay.
I estimate the trip by plane to be around $1,000 and the helicopter(s) would stay at home because of the hassle getting them through security.
It's possible to buy something and have it delivered to my brother's house.
Two more days in Dayton, add $400 for the new helicopter.

The timing isn't great as I'm overseeing 3 new projects and they will all be in that time-frame. Early in May would be a better choice for my work schedule.

Decisions, decisions...

hotel quarantine ...

we all know that the covid fight is a tough ask ,,,but why in the world are people being treated like criminals ,,even though they have tested negative for the virus ,,and yet they are locked up in hotel rooms ,AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE ,,because they have arrived from a red list country ,,,
they have to test negative before they can fly ,,hopefully the airline staff abide by the same criteria ,,
so why are they locked up and treated so badly at their own cost ,,this surely has to be madness in its self ,,,
to be locked in a room for 10 days on your own would drive most people nuts ,,,
i really struggle to get my head around this ,,,,surely there has to be a better alternative to this cruelty ,,,,

Quebec, Canada.

Merely a few short and lovely hours by Rolls-Royce from the Aa palace in Maine. EH? But what a different world. I know I rant on the ueber PC nature of our neighbors to the north, but they really are lovely in every way, and run a country admirably. Waiting for the ladies to indulge in a little clothes shopping at an enormous Mall, after the same in the quaint shoppes in Vieux-Quebec. They have dad's credit cards in hand---OUCH!. Tiny feelings of a vacation in Paris, without the fear of terrorism. Bravo approves of the hot French barking lady dogs. Home again tonight. Festivals all summer here----150th country anniversary begins next week. Two weeks of celebration. The Who outdoors! Aa.

Checklist for USA.

I know, I know.. I am still a LONG way away from actually going, but it's not too early to make a list of things I need to do and get!

So first up: Book the flight. That's the main thing. I did that. I found a good deal on Google. The trip is from Copenhagen to London with British Airways (rated 5.9/10 in 2018, making it the 17th best airline that year), and then American Airlines (Rated 6.4/10 in 2018 on making it the best US airline) from London to Newark.

A return ticket was $348,59, making it a FANTASTIC deal. I am in basic economy, which is the cheapest ticket, which is fine. I am not really picky when it comes to seating on a flight. As long as I get there, I am happy. I might even sleep for the majority of the flight. Read more about the basic economy here

Next up on my list: Get an ESTA. ESTA stands for "Electronic System for Travel Authorization", and it's an automated system, that checks to see if I have been a bad boy regarding law enforcement, terrorism and other nasty stuff. Since I am clean, I don't see why they wouldn't approve it.

Third entry on my list: Read up on the US. Specifically how to tip, since I know it's expected of me to do so, when I visit a restaurant. I think it's 10% you leave in tips, but if that's not true, please feel free to correct me on that.

Fourth entry, and this is important: Dollars. I need money to spend whilst I am in the US. I am thinking around $1000 would be sufficient, given I am there for a week only. It gives me roughly $142 per day to spend, which should be plenty.

So far, that is all on my list. Of course I need to pack as well, but I plan to pack a carry-on bag, that will fit underneath the seat, since my ticket doesn't include an overhead bin. If I have to check a bag, that will be extra at the airport. We'll see what I do, but if I have to pack for a week, I might just shove it all into a duffelbag and put that under my seat. I will pack the day before I leave, which is still months away.

I might come up with more items on my list, when we get closer to my departure.
