Just our luck

Art booked flights to San Antonio somewhere in Nov 2021, thinking that it’d be nice for us to be in SA in late February.

Boy was he wrong! rolling on the floor laughing For some unknown reasons, the weather the few days we were there was unexpected for the month of February. Everybody in SA that we came across was telling us how odd that they were getting a cold spell during that time.

We were in SA from Feb 23rd-26th 2022.
The weather was real nice just a day before we arrived and a day after we left, it went back to being nice again! laugh

Well, we tried to make the best of it since we were already stuck down there. Nothing much to be done at the famous Riverwalk due to the cold, rain and wind mumbling

Saw some funnies around town.

A day before we left, Art and I decided to check out the Mexican Historic Market Square at the recommendation of one of our Uber drivers. To be honest, I wasn’t very keen on these run-of-the-mill kinda stalls/shops. I suddenly spotted one of my favorite store in the world!!!! GOODWILL!!!!!! I squealed in delight and Art was like doh mumbling sigh

He was, “Really?!?! You really wanna go to a Goodwill even while we are on a holiday?!?!” Looking at me incredulously, shaking his head at the same time…

Not about to back down, I said defiantly, “ As a matter of fact, YES!!!” snooty

At the same time I texted my Malaysian girlfriends back in Omaha about the whole showdown laugh

My Malaysian holiday coming to an end in less than 24 hours….

Just like that….6 weeks gone!

Bittersweet. Can’t wait to see cheeky Art again applause and my son applause but it’s breaking my heart to leave my daughter behind….sad flower

I’ve been traveling to few places on my own, with my daughter and my best friends. Very very tiring for someone with severe rheumatoid arthritis ( nope, the pain did not lessen while I’m here ) but I would do it again in a heartbeat…

I stayed at my ex-husband’s relatives’ house and they cooked some of the most delicious southern Indian food for me throughout my stay!

It’s the 8th Feb, 4.30am and in less than 8 hours, I’d be meeting my daughter’s best friend for the first time. Dora and her bf always look out for my daughter and I really appreciate that. heart beating

After the meeting, I won’t go anywhere else coz I’d need to pack, pack, and pack! Too many stuff I’ve bought and given by people and a bulk of them have to go…sadly…

Yesterday afternoon, my daughter picked me up from the bus terminal after I arrived from my hometown, Teluk Intan where I spent some time with my long-time girlfriends.

We went to a cafe right away and I had the best rosé flavored latte smitten

Mingle Cafe in the heart of Kuala Lumpur Chinatown. I’ve always loved pre-war shophouses coz when I was a wee gal, I would visit my maternal grand uncle at his law practice conducted from one of the oldest pre-war buildings in Teluk Intan and they are very similar all over Malaysia and Singapore.

The Chinese character ‘Fuk’ ( in Cantonese ) means ‘Luck’ and often times you’d see them hung upside down. There’s a meaning to it…

My daughter chose to have banh mi and it was clearly a better choice. I took a bite and ordered one to go! grin

My mom enjoyed banh mi and the baguettes a lot when she visited Vietnam many years ago so I decided to get her some freshly baked baguettes. I just realized how obscene this picture turned out to be….blushing

It’s time to go home

Well, I consider Omaha home now but I’ve been pining to go back to Malaysia for awhile now. Wanted to fly back late last year/earlier this year but there were too many restrictions still and I abandoned the idea until a month ago when Art just booked a ticket for me to fly back to Malaysia end of this year! cheering

I’d be visiting on my own without Art. We both feel it’s best I go alone coz by then, I haven’t been back for more 3 years and I would’ve a lot of things to catch up with family and friends and so many food to binge and gorge grin

A couple of days ago, I saw on my FB Malaysia Quarantine support group that the Malaysia Health Ministry have decided to do away with the cumbersome ’Traveller Card’ applause and now all I gotta do before I embark on my flight is to just fill up my vaccination details on that one app. Such a far cry from early this year! applause

My daughter already been making plans to take time off from her work so that we can spend a little bit of time together. smitten My girlfriends will make sure their calendar is cleared when I go back to my hometown, they better be! scold laugh

My ex-husband’s aunts and cousins already invited me to their house to stay and promised to cook for me the whole time I’m there! smitten I’ve even placed the menu! laugh

December cannot come any sooner….

It’s a good thing the world is slowly opening up now. People can be reunited and for those who have been wanting to meet their long-distance relationship ‘love’, this is the time! What are you waiting for?!?! heart beating

Mini getaway

We were supposed to go for a 5-day trip to Breckenridge, CO but after looking at its weather forecast, we decided to go to Amana Colonies, IA instead. I was bummed coz I was really looking forward to Breckenridge and all the activities that Art and I have had planned sigh It was forecasted it’d be raining the whole time we’d be there and Art didn’t want our trip to be San Antonio 2.0 laugh
We were in San Antonio back in February and it rained during most part of our trip and it was freezing cold blues We booked our flights and hotel 4-5 months earlier thinking SA would have its best weather at that time but Mother Nature obviously had other plans for us. doh

Anyway, Amana Colonies was alright but I gotta say, not a big fan of German food…The whole time I was there having my meals, it made me miss my old country even more…blues crying

First stop- furniture shop. The only thing I was interested in was their $8,500 sofa. love I’d have to sell my son for that laugh

Next stop- Quilt shop. While Art and I were browsing the shop, pretending to be interested, my son just sat on a chair near the exit, didn’t even bother to show the least interest. very mad

Making plans for the USA! (part 2)

I know I am very early with all this planning, but it doesn't hurt to be well prepared.

So far, I have three things planned: The first thing is transportation from the airport to my accommodation. My friend is picking me up from the airport, so that's a plus! That saves me money on an Uber or a taxi.

Second: Places to eat! I am visiting one fast food place, one restaurant and one street food place. I have the fast food locked in, which is Wendy's. I will decide on a restaurant and a street food place later down the line.

Third: A visit to a mall. I want to visit a proper American mall, with lots of shops and food options. If the weather is good, I might go for a stroll along a waterfront.

Once my accommodation is booked, I will apply for an ESTA.

For now, more planning.

I know, 302 days, 14 hours and 51 minutes until departure, but still!

Riding Shotgun...

Historically, a stage coach is a horse drawn carriage from the old West that often carried passengers, mail and money (usually gold or silver) across America. Having a driver alone was too dangerous if they carried bullion, so a second person was hired as protection against attacks by bandits or (as they were called in that period) Indians.
The second person carried a shotgun (and or rifles and handguns) and sat alongside the driver. Usually, this tipped off the bandits as a lone driver carried no money.

The phrase 'Riding Shotgun' was coined as the person sitting next to the driver and still carries over into modern times... hopefully without the guns!

Nobody wanted to sit in the back seat, so when dad wanted his kids to accompany him on a trip it was a duel as to who got to sit up front. The car had a bench seat and some models were large enough to hold 3, but as we grew older and bickering occurred only one could have the position of shotgun.

The same thing happened when I was in a band and we were old enough to have a license to drive. Frank had a van that carried some of our equipment to rehearsal. If you didn't call shotgun and be the first, you had to sit on the floor of the van... without much air conditioning.

I remember Bob called "Universal Shotgun" and Jay said "Only if you'd like to be ejected from the group"

It's time to go somewhere new!

The last time I was on a proper holiday was in 2010 where I went to London, England, for an extended weekend break. Yesterday, I decided to finally book a holiday out of the country. My destination? Virginia, USA. When? May 2023.

Flights are cheap now. From Copenhagen to Dulles, with a layover in Frankfurt, and from Dulles back to Copenhagen, with a layover in Munich: $377.. Economy class, so nothing fancy. I will worry about booking a hotel later, right now I'll book the flight and start saving up for some spending money. I'm thinking about $800 should do for a week.

The trip itself is with Lufthansa, an airline I have never flown with, however I have heard good things about them. The flight to Frankfurt is with an Airbus A320neo, which isn't that exciting. The more exciting thing is the flight from Frankfurt to Dulles: A 747-8! A plane I have been wanting to fly on since I was able to walk.

The flight home is with an Airbus A350 to Frankfurt, and an Airbus A320 to Copenhagen from Frankfurt.

But yeah, a $377 return flight to the USA from Copenhagen is VERY cheap!

I can't wait! Hopefully they won't cancel it like my trip to New York back in 2020..

Have dog will travel...

I saw a guy on a motorcycle with his dog yesterday. Unusual, but funny. The dog appeared to be comfortable with this position as a secure rider, complete with sunglasses.
