Pixels1: Personally I prefer not use my name in the forums for general privacy. But that's just my view. I have found myself having to double check that I am not using anyone's name though on a couple of occasions.

That´s probably wise, but how would you feel if somebody you had written to used your name in the forums? Would you tell them not to do it again?

I think people more often than not use real names without considering the possibility it may not be welcome.

Yes I would. They may do it in error but I would mail them privately

Sending them an email would be the appropriate response by informing them that you prefer to keep your real name to personal mail, and not the forums, if that is your choice. Just be polite, but there would be no need for a detailed explaination.

I prefer to keep my name to myself and people I correspond with in personal mail. If they use my initial of my real name this is fine by me.

I think unless it's clear that a CSer doesn't mind having her or his name posted here that we shouldn't do that. Good question, Jan.hug

redkayak: I also agree...Newbies come into the forums and see people personally chatting back and forth for pages at a time and they feel like an outsider. Probably will not bother posting on the thread subject because of that, even though they wanted to.

My thought on the personal chit chat is send an email if you want to know "what's up" with someone, very cliquee.....

thank you redkayak, - it does feel that way, i do have a lot of personal conversations with people i met here by mail or IM, it's better that way.

I prefer to keep my "real name" to private communication only and use my "online" name for forums. I dont know if there is an established online etiquette. It makes me think in someways we are pioneers wave

JAN_is: Yes I understand that. My point was that we do discover people´s real names in private messages as they are often readily given, so does that give one carte blanche to use it in the forums?

no.

i for one cant stand it only because i am a stickler for
tradition and most etiquette.
im sure you can identify with that jan. grin

i usually, when beginning a new friendship here tell them in mail to please not use it, yet i feel like a nerd or bossy when i do so.
i suppose because at times there have been groups of people
that all address each other by first names in forum.

i came online and into forums in late 1991 and it just wasnt done.
as the internet has become more widespread some of the initial
etiquette has not been passed along i think.

dunno but you are right i think, possibly a number of people dont like it when someone does that to them in a forum and especially when once its done, others, even strangers
follow suit and say their name in forum, and then they dont want to seem like a nerd or bossy so they just endure it.

no likey.you never catch me doing that, end when people do it i will sometimes follow with a post using the screenname
but people dont take the hint or possibly assume i dont know the person well enough to be in the 'in crowd' and use their name.

in fact i have felt at times around here when its done in a group that it is a display to the rest of us that they are more intimate with each other and we 'outsiders'.
but thats just an assumption.laugh

Well, so that's where you've been hiding all this time, Elvis rolling on the floor laughing

Good thread, Jan. I have to say I prefer my username Angel or just my initial in the forums. The use of one's proper name does give that 'clique' impression - I've only been on here a few months and would sometime hesitate to jump into a thread that seemed to be just a back-and-forth between personal friends.

Mind you, the banter on here has been somewhat lacking of late, need more quality threads grin

I'm sure by now most people know my first name is Tom but that's as far as I go in a public forum like this one. There are just too many ID thieves in this world.

BTW, just as a warning, there are certain trojans floating around that specifically look for banking key words. They hide on your computer sleeping til you type one of them. This activates the trojan and it records your key strokes and your account name & password and they wind up being sold to crooks who will clean out your account. So it pays to be a little reserved about your real ID on the internet.

JAN_is: When we are in private communication with people here they usually sign of their messages with their real name.

I sometimes wonder whether people mind when their names are then used in the forums. I rarely do so myself, just in case it would be a problem, but I have on occasion.

It´s not a problem for me personally, my profile name being my real name.

Any comments?
No, I'm not a big fan of people using first names in the forums.

It comes across as so smarmily cliquey barf it makes me feel quite sick
