The Christmas Parrot

One Christmas Eve, a frenzied young man ran into a pet shop looking for an unusual Christmas gift for his wife. The shop owner suggested a parrot, named Chest, which could sing famous Christmas carols. This seemed like the perfect gift. "How do I get him to sing?" The young man asked, excitedly. "Simply hold a lighted match directly under his feet." was the shop owner's reply.

The shop owner held a lighted match under the parrot's left foot. Chest began to sing: "Jingle Bells! Jingle Bells! ..." The shop owner then held another match under the parrot's right foot. Then Chest's tune changed, and the air was filled with: " Silent Night, Holy Night..."

The young man was so impressed that he paid the shop-keeper and ran home as quickly as he could with Chet under his arm. When the wife saw her gift she was overwhelmed.

"How beautiful!" She exclaimed, "Can he talk?" "No," the young man replied, "But he can sing. Let me show you." So the young man whipped out his lighter and placed it under Chest's left foot, as the shop-keeper had shown him, and Chest crooned: "Jingle Bells! Jingle bells!..." The man then moved the lighter to Chest's right foot, and out came: "Silent Night, Holy night..."

The wife, her face filled with curiosity, then asked, "What if we hold the lighter between his legs?" The man did not know. "Let's try it," he answered, eager to please his wife. So they held the lighter between Chest's legs. Chest twisted his face, cleared his throat, and the little parrot sang out loudly like it was the performance of his life: "Chest's nuts roasting on an open fire...."

I kinda agree with Paul.

The one thing I agree with 100% is where he says ''Listen, I don't know everything''.
And he's a bit late to the game considering there is a whole anti psychiatry movement out there and decrying the Pharmaceutical business, whose goal is profits thru customers and not cure. From 50/60 years ago where people were just medicated and locked up Mental Health professionals are now being tasked with cure and recovery.

But depression is real, it exists, its extremely debilitating and stops people contributing and participating in society.
It's not just a case of ''copping oneself on'', there's a lot more to it than that.

Yes, It is an illness, anyone can get it. There doesn't have to be a reason, its not just feeling down because a pet died, or a poor exam result, or boredom, or death of a family member, or not getting a desired job, or life not turning out as expected. It has no reason. It can hit a person for no reason whatsoever, so telling someone to cheer up, or take up a new hobby, or pull themselves together is no use.
Its a chemical imbalance in the brain. We don't know everything, and everyone is different. Sometimes pills work, sometimes they don't. Sometimes one pill works and another type of pill doesn't. Sometimes it trial and error till the right pill is found. But sometimes pills don't work. Sometimes counselling works on one person but doesn't work on another person.

Its complicated and we are still learning.

I have known people who suffered from it. I know someone who went through a period of anxiety and depression about ten years ago and Prozac worked wonders. That person made a full recovery pretty quickly and now there are no signs of it at all. I know another person for whom no pill seemed to work, and went through misery for years trying everything.
