GUZMAN1: Residents have been sharing concerns about fire safety and protocols at Grenfell Tower for years.

The cause might be a refrigerator which exploded on the Fourth Floor, but this has not been verified.

I hope the building does not collapse before an investigation that determines the responsibilities.

Good morning here..... I'm not sure if I'd want to do the investigating inside a building in this condition.

jac_the_gripper: Seeing a couple of the images, it's hard to imagine that anyone trapped could possibly still be alive.

Reports of telephone conversations between residents told to stay in their flats and relatives outside the building are chilling.

.
Staying in your flat is normally advised but you should soak towels, bedding etc and block the airway under the main door, keep windows closed, put plugs in all sinks and baths and open all taps, also if you have a fire hose from the dry riser on your floor open it and let it flood, get everyone in the bathroom and block the airway under the door, keep throwing water on the door and try to keep it wet, don't keep inflammable things in the bathroom and also have wet cloths to cover yourself with and wait for the services to get to you.

Depending on the layout of this block there could still be places where there has been no fire and normally it is a bathroom, if there is smoke breathe through a wet cloth.

You will be ok with a hard hat, in the UK you need a hard hat and reflective jacket even if you are wallpapering your Mum's bedroom so it must be the thing to do.

robplum: A sizeable number of the block’s residents are Muslim, and many might have been out of the building as it is during the holy month of Ramadan, Ali suggested. However, many others were still reportedly inside when the fire started, he added.

Muslim’s observing Ramadan may have saved lives in the tower block, as many of them were awake and they alerted neighbours and friends.

And also they write that ppl in this area are very tight & live peacefully together despite many different cultures etc.

Just looked at the pictures - its a burning hell that building, horrible, 74 injured so far & 6 dead.

Nothing to do but pray & wait.

According to the documents from the planning application, fire safeguards which would stop the spread of fire from floor to floor were temporarily removed during refurbishment.

It's not clear at this stage if they were replaced.

I am surprised at the "sympathy" expressed by some on this issue. I know how much many of you hate Muslims. I would suspect you would be rejoicing!mumbling

Is it true that the building was designed by the same guy who designed the Morgan automobile?

It's been confirmed that 12 people are dead, 18 are receiving critical care in hospital, but incredibly, fire fighters have reached to top floor rescuing people seen at their windows, some holding children.

There are some small, difficult to reach areas that are still on fire and no more survivors are expected to be found.

It's incredible that the emergency services managed to rescue so many. It's thought that there were around 500 people living in the building which appeared to be almost totally ablaze.

In NYC there are scores of subsidized hi-rise buildings , they are known as "Projects" the name carries a very bad cache' where the residents are all on welfare. The buildings are all made of brick. They also have sprinkler systems installed during construction.

Horrible and terrifying tragedy. sad flower
Hopefully all those critical will pull through and those missing will be found at the very worst with minor injuries.
Heart warming to see everybody looking after each other, of all races and backgrounds, as they have done during the recent awful terrorist attacks. thumbs up Shows people will pull together no matter what the reason for the tragedy.

A blog post from the Grenfell Action Group from November 2016 said "only a catastrophic event" would expose issues residents had.

No-one listened.

An horrendous tragedy that could have been avoided.

Now we have the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff....sad flower

I've recently been considering buying a condo in a couple of high-rise buildings. Not sure about pursuing one after this tragedy in London, England.

I hope the casualty count for this fire is final.... sad flower
