Symbiotic

Tigress and Piglet both in critical need
third-party interest in doing good deed.

Into this mixture stir acceptance, to taste
smoothing the bitterness that differences make.

Mother’s milk drying up, spirits sinking down
after triplets succumb to death-call’s sound

is a story that pulls the heart strings, anew
but, alas, a fabrication – just not true.

Sriracha Tiger Zoo is the 2004-photo place
where animals mix without notice of race
Saimai nursing piglets, herself, nursed by a sow
Shows us peace is possible in the here-and-now.

Sow Benjamaj divides her nursing time
between tiger cubs and her own baby swine.
Who would think she could hold all so dear?
For this, she’s awarded mother-of-the-year.

The photos taken, real, doubtlessly prove
when giving love, there is little to lose.
Visual entertainment for visitors to see
serves as inspiration for you and for me.

Benjamaj and Saimai to us do not preach
through their actions, rather, do they lovingly teach
all things are possible when we look at each other
not with predator eyes but with those of a mother.

About this poem:
A friend sent photos with accompanying story about mother tiger in CA loosing her triplet cubs. Although the story was fabricated, the photos were real - with their own story to tell.

Ekphrastic afternoon

while sitting at a local literary Louvre
with artists and some other radicals
waiting for return of grammatical groove
that had left me on today's sabbatical

I stumbled for some heartfelt words
to share with you of artistic notions
of whether art is abstract or more absurd
can it cure our ills with colourful potions

and quietly the souls walked the walls
of painted lands and many female forms
to search their own inspiration's calls
outside their box of artistic norms

macroed with micro muted brush lines
of sultry legs and strong countenance
whatever treasure is sought we will find
with some ingrained artful provenance

like Samuel Morse as student of masters
copied Da Vinci from the Parisian museum
hued new light on Mona Lisa to recast her
and express his own artistic freedom

we give out hope of showing of ourselves
that bit of soul our heart holds close
down new pathways that we delve
our hands stretch toward divine, almost

Adventures in Plumbing

Plumbing can be a mystery,
Though doesn't seem like it should be.
All runs downhill, or so they say,
It's all in joining 'B' to 'A'.

So why is it that when I try,
Some minor mending to apply,
All my careful preparation,
Only leads to pure frustration?

These fittings don't fit up at all,
This one's too fat and that's too small,
And leaks I try to fix it seems,
They turn themselves to steady streams.

A plumber costs too much for me,
But done for cheap ain't done for free.
Know before I complete this chore,
My fourth trip to the hardware store.

The Ghost of Halloween

---- IMAGE REMOVED because photobucket.com no longer allows embedded images ----

Big guys with chainsaws revving loud,
Fake blood and spiders hanging down,
Screams and eerie music blaring,
Sheets floating cross the "haunted" town.

These places don't do much for me,
Guess kids are more who they are for.
My mem'ries are of dressing up,
And traipsing, begging door to door.

Course we had to soap some windows,
Or TP houses without light.
Up and down the blocks we hurried,
With candy on our minds that night.

When all the goodies had been got,
And all the pumpkins' candles gone,
We'd drag our bags back home again,
While vainly trying not to yawn.

Now's my turn to carve the pumpkin,
And hand out goodies at the door.
But very few come round it seems,
The spirit's gone forevermore...

About this poem:
Last year there were only six kids came to the door. These youngsters get too much every day and don't have the ambition to walk from the car to the porch... Ah well, that's just one old curmudgeon's opinion

Ode To Tom Robbins

Just one more wayside tourist trap?
Oh no, the wizard said!
And gals with pistols looking sad,
Although they've roses red.

A feathered redhead splits the air,
So loud it sets you free.
A beet so sweet with rhythm wild,
And scent so heavenly.

Who cares if limbs are kinda thin,
As veils fall all around?
Amphibians drowse in quiet repose,
In bedclothes that they've found.

Infirmities be damned, he cried!
Too hot, and vivid too!
Disguised as hut, a manse is found,
Who knows just what is true?

About this poem:
Can someone guess the title full?
But not tell yet today?
Just post that you have figured out,
And email straight away.

When all have had a chance to muse,
I'll tell the winner true.
Let's have some fun and see who wins,
Perhaps it might be you!

botany

I once knew two sisters
aptly named Flora and Fauna
I coulda loved them both
for sure I was a goner

Flora was a flowery lass
pretty Fauna was easy to envy
both sisters planted kisses
on cheeks so warm and friendly

Fauna could change chromatically
instantly from green to red
emotions turned emphatically
joy morphed to anger instead

Flora bright-colored and perfumed
smelled wondrous and made me hot
she'd float in and brighten any room
while Fauna could definitely not

animal instincts gave way you see
though both sisters lovely when bare
Fauna tasted a bit green to me
Flora blossomed her flower to share

between A and Z

friendship remains for D and C
with the balance of power shifted
new life into the mixture has come
with happiness to be gifted

though it was just at tips of fingers
there is no rest for R and R
yet the aroma of love still lingers
baked goodness dripping from a star

T partially consumed by S
J nearly done in by K
alphabet of love failures
on the heart doth heavily weigh

cell turned against itself
to destroy from inside out
love’s loss it was that turned the switch
research will prove, no doubt

overwhelmed by grief of loss
sleep tossed from night to day
time would turn quickly for one
the other later would have to pay

T swept up by love of M
who proved to be the one
J dangles without letter to come
match step-for-step life’s fun

blizzard flakes of besotted love
fall from heaven and blanket ground
obstructed view by clouds above
storms continuing to surround

waiting for love in stormy weather
swirling snowflakes strike the cheek
‘til love returns and makes life better
wait, a new year starts this week

Covid-19

In-person meetings suspended
Conference rooms closed to use
By keeping a 6-foot distance
everyone stays apart—not aloof.

Blues, folk, rock concerts rescheduled
Museums closed to showing art
Theatre not performed on stages
Citizens asked to do their part.

Flattening-the-curve approach required
But when our leaders fail to lead
people are driven to poor decisions
and takers feed upon their greed.

Shelves in stores stripped to empty
Essentials horded, stock-piled away
Preparing for the worst to come
Hoping to be spared anew each day.

Public schools closed until April
Red Sox Opening Day postponed
Weighing decisions to self-isolate
with every day to be spent alone.

Boston Marathon moved to September
Walk for Hunger canceled complete
Needs in air still hover, linger though
movement ceased beneath our feet.

With tents as makeshift hospital wards
first-come-first-served policy goes out the door
Triage decisions necessary to be made
disproportionally impact the poor.

Forego cavalier, casual attitudes
Avoid need for imminent, acute care
There are vulnerable people everywhere
Covid-19 travels through touch and air.

Individual freedom temporarily bartered
to provide better protection for everyone
Embrace physical-distancing as one way
war against this pandemic can be won.

Beauty In Imperfection

The rugged bark of an old tree
with imperfection due to its cracks
is a wondrous thing of beauty
and it's the imperfection that attracts

We know that a star-shaped flower
does not make a perfect star
Yet it has a certain loveliness
that induces a sense of wonder

A hand-crafted ceramic bowl
because of its asymmetry
is a wonderful artefact
that is valued very highly

An old-time cobblestone street
has a unique charm and quaintness
due to its imprecise pattern
that gives it it's loveliness

Perfection is not easy to attain
and even more difficult to sustain
Beauty lies in imperfection
and they are a natural combination
