POETRY AND PROSE

Traditional poetry has rhyme and metre
Which determines the way it is composed
These features make it a simple matter
In distinguishing such poetry from prose

A lot of writing now is in free verse
Where the main focus is on the content
The thing that now really matters the most
Is true capture of the poet's intent

Some free verse strive for a sense of metre
By carefully managing line layout
Some focus on painting a word picture
For that's what their poetry is all about

Prose rich in sentiment and imagery
Can also be rewritten as free verse
Would it then be described as prose poetry
Or should it be labelled poetic prose

What new poetry forms will the future grow
It's time alone that will give the answer
For poets may come and poets may go
But poetry shall continue forever

About this poem:
As a child, growing up, most of the poems I learned at school were of the traditional type. Memorizing and reciting them, which I enjoyed, were part of the learning exercise. Free verse, a modern form of poetry, was a new experience for me. Over the years, I jotted down some of my thoughts on things, especially, on Nature topics. I always considered such writings to be prose.
It was only after I learned of free verse, that I saw that they could also be viewed as poetry with a slight variation in the line layout to create a sense of metre. I referred to such writing as poetic prose and labelled some of my earlier poems as such.

The Beat Of Life Goes On

Mom got up early and is in the kitchen
Preparing the breakfast for everyone
Dad's still in the bathroom and is shaving
And the beat of life goes on

The kids are busy getting set for school
One is still trying to get homework done
The others are taking things really cool
And the beat of life goes on

Now all sit around the breakfast table
To fuel themselves for the day's action
Each consumes what he or she is able
And the beat of life goes on

Dad leaves the home for his workplace early
Mom patiently checks the kids one by one
To ensure that for school each is ready
And the beat of life goes on

Dad is at work earning his salary
Kids are at school getting education
Mom is at home with some chores she's busy
And the beat of life goes on

It's suppertime now for the family
And it's filled with lively conversation
Each one partakes of the meal heartily
And the beat of life goes on

After supper, mom tidies the kitchen
Then joins the rest watching television
Later, for next day each starts preparing
And the beat of life goes on

The kids get busy with their assignment
Mom and Dad continue to linger on
They chat a bit about now the day went
And the beat of life goes on

Then finally they all head off to bed
For much needed sleep and relaxation
To refresh each for the new day ahead
And the beat of life goes on

Mom got up early and is in the kitchen
Preparing the breakfast for everyone
Dad's still in the bathroom and is shaving
And the beat of life goes on

Love Is A Decision

Love is not based on a feeling only
There must also be a clear decision
Passionate feelings may die off early
Showing it was just infatuation

One should not need another as a crutch
But be able to stand on one's feet
This will allow each other space as such
And enrichen the sharing when both meet

A love relationship has its demands
It does not ensure smooth sailing always
Be mindful of this in each circumstance
And it will help you survive the rough days

The one that you love should be your best friend
Someone with whom you can share everything
A person upon whom you can depend
In situations that can be trying

As time passes, both of you will change
For change is inevitable in life
Do not consider this as something strange
Learn to adjust and avoid any strife

True love is the most precious emotion
That a person can engage in sharing
It fills the heart with blissful elation
Giving one's life a rich sense of meaning

About this poem:
"Love is a decision, it is a judgement, it is a promise. If love were only a feeling, there would be no basis for the promise to love each other forever. A feeling comes and it may go. How can I judge that it will stay forever, when my act does not involve judgement and decision."

- Erich Fromm - (The Art of Loving)

"But let there be spaces in your togetherness. And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow."

Kahlil Gibran – (The Prophet)

theysay

they say we'll come to our end one day
they say we just won't matter
they say we'll become our own prey
with thoughts as mad as a hatter

they say we'll run out of water
they say we'll run out of food
they say we'll kill or be slaughtered
they say we'll come to no good

they say civility's near an end
they say there's no use in tryin'
they say our actions only portend
civilization's weakness's underlyin'

they say we don't know what we're doin'
and perhaps it's true, we don't
seems like the whole world we're screwin'
but maybe the prediction's overblown

maybe there's another bend to turn
maybe there is another angle
maybe 'stead of like before, we'll learn
to sort our emotions to better unscramble

maybe love can actually conquer fear
maybe there's a brighter dawn to come
today's weathered is tomorrow's all clear
maybe empathy is our new rule-of-thumb

The Power Of Silence

If you listen when it's still all around
You will hear the very sound of silence
It's the basic sound that is the background
That allows other sounds their existence

Silence gives music its reality
It's the space between notes that is free
This allows them to resonate freely
And that creates a sense of harmony

Silence is not the absence of something
It's a thing in itself with great power
Skilfulness of it's placement in speaking
Is the hallmark of a great orator

It can express feeling with great effect
Better than words during some occasion
Like a silent minute to mark respect
For those who gave their lives for their nation

A deeper awareness of the divine
Can be sought in silent meditation
Silence helps to focus the restless mind
Engaged in spiritual devotion

Silence is a balm for the weary soul
Providing peacefulness and upliftment
It heals the worn spirit making it whole
And fills it with deep seated contentment

A Child's Christmas

Christmas should be a time of joy
For every little girl and boy
They gather 'round the Christmas tree
Little hearts beating eagerly

Their eyes closely scan each present
Wondering what Santa has sent
Some hope they have been good enough
And would get their requested stuff

Mum picks up each present gently
And reads to see whose it might be
A little heart leaps at its name
And then joyfully makes its claim

After presents are given out
Then it's time for another bout
It's time for presents' unwrapping
One can feel excitement growing

Tiny one still in diaper
Tries to peel off wrapping paper
Mum assists the eager beaver
Expectation growing stronger

Squeals of excitement fill the air
From the other kids gathered there
Their delight they cannot contain
Santa has delivered again

Once again thank you Dear Santa
Setting little hearts a-flutter
Making Christmas a time of joy
For every little girl and boy

Lament of a Jaded Lover

To love or not to love again
That is the real question for me
I've already suffered much pain
And my heart is in agony

It's nice to be in love they say
The experience is pure bliss
But if your lover goes away
How does someone deal with this?

The second time, love is sweeter
That is something also stated
Who knows what will happen later
At present I am quite jaded

I shall move on despite the strain
And whatever will be, will be
Will I ever find love again?
That's in the hands of destiny

About this poem:
I tried to put myself in the position of a jaded lover and wrote this piece.
I think there are persons here to whom it may apply.
It does not apply to myself directly.

Rising From The Ashes

The wear and tear of my past experience
has ravaged my spirit, body and soul
Now my life is a mere shallow existence
with a deep longing to be made whole

I was caught in the beauty of your charm
and savouring its full pleasure was my goal
Now I experience a deep sense of alarm
at the loss of my feeling of control

But with my own inner resolve and firmness
and the strength I can get from other avenues
I must overcome this sense of helplessness
and move on to live my life as I choose

The phoenix bird burns itself to ashes
whenever it becomes worn out with age
And from those ashes a new phoenix arises
and starts a fresh life cycle on a new page

Scorched and burned by my actions of the past
and having learned from the anguish and pain
I also will rise from those ashes at last
and move on afresh with my own life again

Live and Let Live

At any time whatsoever
Whether day or night, night or day
There's always some CS blogger
Who is up with something to say

Some post blogs of their very own
Others merely make a comment
Some just peruse to see what's shown
And with viewing, they are content

CS blogging is taking place
All across the entire globe
With no barrier to creed or race
There is no need for any probe

Among all the differing views
There are times when conflicts arise
Such cases, CS mods diffuse
For bloggers here, that's no surprise

So let's all enjoy the blogging
And to the rules be attentive
In the process of so doing
Remember to live and let live
