You are an interesting poster, Mindful, and I always read your words with interest.thumbs up

Six Nations..Official Thread..

Think you are probably right in the victors of the games, Losty, but I think possibly the margins might be bigger. Think Wales and Ireland will win, but think the Scotland Italy margin might be closer.

RE: Online Relationships....Guarded Hearts

Great post OPthumbs up

Dating is a gamble, whether it is online or not.

I suppose the trick is to wear a certain amount of armour, but then to also know when to ditch the armour plating and into something that will will let Cupid's arrows penetrate..

Thats the conumdrum, and its not an easy one.

Alpha Males

I came across this article today and thought it may be an interesting topic. Please not these are NOT my words! Just wondered - do "Alpha Males" actually exist, and if so, are they STILL out there, or has society changed these stereotypes?

"In human societies the term can mean very different things. Some use the term to mean the guy who seems most at ease with women and can essentially marry or date any woman of his choice. In this sense the alpha male is often good-looking, has a great build, and may have a relatively high social/economic status. These distinctions may be less noticed in human groups like high school settings. Generally the alpha male (or a group of alpha males) are the cutest guys, usually muscle-bound, sometimes the “jocks,” while beta males may be less assured around females and may participate in less “male” activities.

The guys who join math teams or play chess at lunch are usually the beta males and may be thought less attractive by girls. It should be noted that “nerds” (and here we use the term fondly and affectionately), are becoming increasingly popular. As long-term mates or “boyfriends,” they stereotypically on average tend to be nicer and more respectful toward girls. This article also does not imply that all attractive males are necessarily alpha. Alpha males are more about exhibiting traits that are essentially masculine or “macho.” Many attractive males are beta to the core when it comes to relating with people.

In work settings, the alpha male may be a natural leader, exuding confidence. But he also may be contentious, demanding and difficult to work with. This is thought to be in part due to the alpha male attempting to retain his stature, however unconsciously, as alpha. Being the top salesperson, the quickest worker, the most aggressive boss may contribute to remaining at the top, and the alpha has a tendency to respond aggressively to any attempts by others to outshine him.

This is true in non-human settings too. The alpha male is continually being tested to see if he remains dominant and may need to stage pitched fights with upcoming males in a group to remain “top dog.” In the human setting, the alphaalphaalpha malemalemale usually doesn’t fight physically, but instead acts with language, brusque or dismissive behavior, or with other tactics to remain at the top.

Though leaders in a company are excellent to have, alphaalphaalpha malemalemale characteristics in the workplace may not always be seen as positive. Aggression and disregard for others are not necessarily inspiring. Some people better lead by being “beta” and having good communication skills, sensitivity toward others, and downplaying their strengths so they can showcase the strengths of others.

In adult social settings, alpha males again may be judged not so much by aggression, but by their ability to get the most attractive women as mates. This is the primary reason for alpha behavior in other animals.

The alpha male in adult society is likely to be confident, attractive, and wealthy. Questions remain as to whether the alpha male can retain mates, since relationships often require ability to compromise, to discuss feelings and to be sensitive. Some alpha males have these characteristics typically thought of as beta, but many of them lack such traits. You can certainly point to prominent alpha males in our society who seem to have poor track records with women, either involving themselves in a succession of failed relationships or marrying one woman after another, with no marriage lasting for very long".

Apologies for the length of the post, just wanted to get it all in!!laugh

RE: Toys

Something called "Girls World", which was basically a lifesize plastic head on a stand with long retractable hair, that you could make up and change the hairstyle on, the usual girlie thing..

Trouble was, one night when I was about 10 years old, I sleepwalked into my parent's bedroom with this head under my arm. Cant remember a darn thing about it, but apparently scared the living bejeezus out of my mum and dad. Looked like something out of a Shakesperean play,so I was told..doh

It consequently got thrown in the garbage the next morning...laugh

RE: Is communication important?

Totally agree, Tam. Absolutely.

What drives me mad though, its when I say to a partner "I need some space to think" and they automatically think its because I am going to leave them. Drives me ballisticfrustrated frustrated

Sometimes you really do need some breathing space to ponder on something, in order to come back with a sensible and thought out response..

I guess women have their "caves" as well

RE: Karma........

I do believe in karma, yes.

I am not going to pretend that I know alot about the technical definitions of it, because I dont, but I do definately believe in trying to do good deeds and being kind to other people, and being true to yourself and your conscience.

I have done a certain amount of reading about buddhism and taoism, and although I am not particularly religious, I do try to follow the concepts laid out in these belief systems. It can be extremely testing sometimes, and sometimes I "fall off the path", but as soon as I can, I climb back on.

"What goes around, comes around?" - well, I sincerely hope so.

Nice thread, Vinnythumbs up

RE: 8 Reasons To End A Relationship

Id rather be positive, and think about 8 reasons to start a relationship, personally:-

1. You miss them when you are not with them;
2. You wake up thinking about them, and the bed is too big without them;
3. You go to sleep thinking about them;
4. You doodle their name on your notepad when youre at work without thinking;
5. You make a space for their favourite beer in the cooler, even though they are not there;
6. When you feel down, the first thing you want is their company;
7. You know their faults already, but dont care;
8. You know that they think you are fabulous and the feeling is mutual..

There, not a grain of misery in sight!!

RE: Dating & Mental Health

Luckily, depression and mental health issues in general have a much higher profile now than 20 years ago, and more is understood about them.

There can still be a stigma attached to sufferers though, and in my humble opinion it is mainly due to fear and lack of knowledge.

I feel very sorry for women who suffer post natal depression; it must be hell to deal with that as well as looking after a young child..doh

Hopefully knowledge will continue to increase, and humanity in general will learn just how common these issues are, and the fact that they can affect people from all walks of life.

RE: Whats in a Name!!!

I used to work as a receptionist in an engineering factory, and had to use the tannoy system to call for people on the shopfloor occasionally.

There was an employee called MIKE HUNT...

I used to have to call out "MIKE HUNT TO RECEPTION PLEASE, MIKE HUNT..."blushing

God, you could hear the howls of laughter right through the factory...

RE: Is it ok to just not reply???

I used to reply to EVERY email and flower I got, either to say thanks, but no thanks, or to say thank you, Id like to get to know you better.

However, I got so fed up with nasty emails coming back to me when I said I didnt want to take it further, I now just delete and block if I dont want to correspond. Easiest way, I think.

What is the most important thing in Life?

Nice post, HJ. wave

When I posted this last night, I was thinking more about material things really, I guess.

I am quite happy in myself, and Im not perfect, but am content with my flaws and attributes..

I am also flexible though. If I needed to change small details in my life to obtain true love, then I would. Life is short.

Political History and Hate

Thats very true. The problem I found was that unfortunately the soliders are indoctrinated to the extent that they dont necessarily know WHAT they are fighting for, apart from "doing their job".

I wondered if other people had experienced this kind of conflict in a relationship.
