I understand the history, overall, maybe not in specifics, but that was part of my point, to get someone to respond...how would it feel as a nation, being English, to have your national heritage stolen by invaders over the course of history, and not argue to have it returned.
You have to think of both sides, or even multiple sides/segments of any discussion before you should come to a conclusion.
Case in point, is my own government and it's handling of the Native people in Canada. I rarely agree with the outcome, seeing as it's often "too little, too late", but I'll still argue the points I disagree with, despite any notions of national pride.
It's a matter of perspective, in regards to what you feel is right.
In all this reminds me of a number of people from the past on here, but that doesn't mean it's any one of them, or any of them.
I dunno, I thought along the same lines at first, but then I thought maybe, I might be wrong. What I realised about the fact that I was suspicious is, that I've become less trusting of people, which is the thing that bothers me moreso than anything else.
What's it all about when nobody likes, trusts, comprehends or understands each other?
The part in red is a poor argument, seeing as when they were removed from Greece, it didn't seem to be an issue. Also, shipping goods of all nature has been improved over the last couple hundred years, so I think it's a moot point in the overall discussion. Unless you feel that somehow the English are incapable in this regard, and it should be left up to the Greeks, or some other nation that has better expertise.
I'm sure the Greek people appreciate the fact that you've preserved their heritage while they've endured innumerous struggles, against formidable aggressors over recent history. Some of whom have plundered the country of national treasures, that may have not seen the recognition or importance they deserved from their own people, during times of strife and occupation.
Maybe some day England will have the opportunity to be a nation that is invaded, has it's national heritage looted and spread around the world by occupying entities.
I realise the list is endless, and I have thought about this prior to this thread, but again since it started.
Of course there's no way possible for every last piece to be returned to it's place of origin, including many of those which might be considered "spoils of war". Maybe there's no real need to either, seeing as some were acquired by legitimate means, from the rightful owners, countries, governments, etc.. It's those that are questionable, and of more significance and national importance, and symbolic of a nation, that are of importance.
What the Turks did with Greek heritage is basically fencing goods taken from one party, to another. If you or I did that, we'd be imprisoned, but seeing as it was a "Lord", with protection and backing from a government, nobody went to jail, or ever would.
Same for those higher up the food chain that are trading in ivory, drugs, people, or even oil and gas. Throughout history, there will be those that get away with murder, and the subsequent generations that end up paying for it, regardless of their involvement, let alone guilt.
Like I said, I don't dispute that the current situation is a responsibility of the current government. What Delatude brought up was the past, and it all starts there, and that has to be addressed as much as the present day.
Odd you should say that, when really, it was the French and the Brits that were responsible for all the plundering and looting in this country, long before it was even a country. Not to mention the deplorable treatment of the indigenous people through all manner of atrocities, including genocide.
I was just there less than 2 years ago, had a couple beers in Molly's Reach with a friend. I didn't see Relic's boat, but I did see the Persephone in the parking lot up on blocks.
This takes me back to a time when all I had to worry about was enough money for gas in my scooter, a pack of smokes, and where to ride to on any given day.
Tunes courtesy of a Sony Walkman 4 with a Sony EQ/amplifier and earphones that fit under my helmet.
I should be shopping for a motorcycle, maybe another Harley.
I'm a huge fan of Ozzy with Black Sabbath, but the Dio years, as well as Rainbow and his solo stuff was as heavy as it got in the day, or even still to this day.
I saw Iron Maiden in Edmonton 4 years ago, for the first time ever. A friend of mine called me and said she had two tickets, and nobody to go with, so I was "stuck" going with her. I resisted at first, but gave in within mere minutes.
I think I would have enjoyed it more at 15, but it was still a great concert, and well worth going to.
Still like a lot of Maiden, just don't listen to it that often anymore.
