And the thing about criminals is they believe either that they're too smart to get caught or they're too dumb or in the moment to care if they do. All that capital punishment does is shift the spectrum towards violence - what could have been a fist is instead a booting and it's because of the example we set. What's important is that we catch criminals, no amount of cruelty can compensate for incompetence.

Possible but not as likely for a man to have a thing about his weight. And losing weight is slightly more of an “oh god! What have I become” thing for a man, useful trumps pretty as the reason to stay in shape for a straight man. It’s you that taught us that.

If by main reason we mean lifesaving reason, yes. It is in a sense the most vital reason. Not main in the sense that 80% of what you say is about your own problems, I’m not sure how fulfilling that would be for anybody including you.
And the nihilism. Nihilism the denial life’s meaningful aspects - what if suffering is one of them? And the poor, will they or will they not always be with us?
I lean towards the belief that going through the mill is an ennobling thing. Not in each and every person but together and overall we do, we are descended from people who faced tremendous odds again and again enduring hardships we can’t possibly imagine.

Consider the Brexit. No one could claim that Brexiteers are friendly or kind or thoughtful at best it's a force of necessary evil that will make posterity appreciate what it's had. Brexit will be character building for those relevant or at least alive 20 years from now, it's just another way for posterity to inherit the debts of its parents but this will be a spur. Those who inherited a fortune left the west considerably worse than they found it and we must believe that the reverse holds true.
Good times creates weak people in a prison made of narcissism and optimistic bias. It's setting yourself up for a fall you will not consider to be your fault(that's the narcissism talking). Good times folk know no boundaries and come with the related inability to make a confession - the advantage of affluence is in reality architecture for the fall. Sell all of your jewellery and give it to the poor.
