RE: No money for Housing -Health and Education

It is somewhat hypocritical for any Westerner to sound pacifistic when we, as a society, are living off the spoils of war and military influence.

Very few seem to appreciate what they have today and even less appreciate why they have it. I wonder if the Western pacifists will stay pacifist when the cost of peace costs them their middle class existences, hmmmm.

RE: Obama for president in 2012 or will America allow the mighty Spin machine of GOP defeating Sanity?

And how does that come about in the first place?

What I actually think is $1 billion now will cost you less in the long term, and that the Republicans would be doing the very same thing right now. The West needs new allies in the region, be they Democratic or dictatorship.

RE: Obama for president in 2012 or will America allow the mighty Spin machine of GOP defeating Sanity?

I think that's still $1 billion less than you were giving Mubarak each year. Life's not all bad news.

RE: I gott ask you folks from Ireland how you did it?

It's just a convenient stereotype. It's easier to blame being useless on being drunk.

RE: English To Blame for the Worlds Problems

You'd be surprised how much philosophy and thought can overlap. Some of his views were reminiscent of Europe's finest.

RE: How important is it to you to be popular, to be liked

It's true, but in my opinion it's not about being popular per se. The uber cool and uber smart people don't herd around after others, the ones that lead the popular cliques are usually quite individual and free-thinking - afterall, it's not them amongst the group that are seeking reflected glory.

RE: English To Blame for the Worlds Problems

Yes, but it's the same attitude that gave us Isaac Newton, too. Great people don't accomplish great things by seeing themselves as average, by seeing their own views as equal to those of average people.

Basically, self-assurance is a common trait to all people that make a difference to the world.

RE: English To Blame for the Worlds Problems

Various philosophers have said similar. If you're familiar with the story of "Faust" - the story of the magician who sacrifices everthing in his quest for limitless knowledge and power - it is used in philosophy as symbolic of Aryan character.

RE: Unilateral Bin Laden Operation

Permission from Pakistan? Pakistan is bordering on becoming a failed state, it is obvious that their president can't keep order within his own ranks and it is also obvious that the people in Pakistan, to a large degree, do not like the West - contrary to the infantile noise and make-believe of Western Liberals.

It's very logical to conclude that informing the Pakistani authorities of the operation would be as good as informing Osama himself.

They did the right thing, and hopefully now we can pull out of Afghanistan sooner.thumbs up

RE: English To Blame for the Worlds Problems

I blame ancient Sumer, they started it all.

Or, I can accept the fact that the strong get ahead of the weak in life and live in the real world.

RE: Twilight

That fever sure is spreading, it's like literature's equivalent of the AIDS virus.

Actually, not too far away, i'm from Fallowfield originally. There's nothing like speaking from experience.

RE: shopping in dubai

What you mean is that level of engineering is beyond the Arabs, but it was indeed the Sheikhs idea - that along with the indoor, air-conditioned football stadiums in the desert.

RE: I guess everything is back to normal in Japan

The Man on the street, so fickle.

RE: The Banker

Depends upon whom ultimately absorbs the cost of the tax. Unless bonuses decrease then the cost is being passed on to everyday people(half the US and UK bankers received higher bonuses then ever in 2010). If this happens then it's an indirect tax on everyday English people, much of which is to be spent elsewhere.

If we really want to beat the banks we need to limit their power. We do so by tightening-up, weaning ourselves off credit, wasting less and doing proper jobs that create a real economy that pays decent wages. Across most of the West the household income hasn't increased(and has even fallen in some cases such as the US)in real terms since the early 1970's, yet undeniably people today have much more, the banks grow ever richer by facilitating this paradox to the point of economic meltdown(2008 recession).

RE: Have You Noticed...

I think it's because Women are more concerned with feelings, whereas I just see it as impractical.

RE: COMMON DECENCY

The propriety of one culture at one time.

RE: Osama bin Laden was EXECUTE by US forces illegally

It's not legal but it is justice.

RE: Has America really been killed?

Or that's how a great nation is made, in the case of yourselves.

RE: Royal wedding in UK

You emmigrate, your generation has sunk this country in its lifetime, and you say I knock this country, shameless hypocrite.

RE: Royal wedding in UK

No desperation? We're begging the far east and the middle east to maintain our economic viability - we're inviting dictators who maim people as punishment when Lady Diana ran charities for the limbless - where's the integrity in that? I know you have no economic understanding of the world, which I can understand because it would be painful for your generation to understand itself in the terms of its worth.

I know which type I am, as I know which type you are, which is the political stereotype of the 60's/70's - Well-meaning, money-driven, irrational, loud, blindly optimistic and afraid of reality.

RE: Royal wedding in UK

Granted. It can make money, but tradition is supposed to mean more than that. Looking at some of the folks invited to this wedding brings shame to England - we've gone all out to market ourselves here, not through choice but through desperation, and it shows as nothing more than a means for England to beg for her survival from various unsavoury characters around the world.

But yes views will differ on this, some just look at today as a party, a romance, a pretty dress and a means to make money, some look at today with blind pride and a few will look upon it with pride and a wish for integrity.

RE: The true meaning of Jeses' message and what really happened

The meaning of all religion from a Human and evolutionary point of view is to hold back Nihilism, as people of faith are much stronger than people who regard life as meaningless.

RE: How do you see yourself?

laugh

Just get a phone number early on, it's all too easy to fall in to the trap of firing off emails all night long.

RE: The true meaning of Jeses' message and what really happened

Well yea, but it's sanctimonious to revere the same doctrine forever. Any doctrine, any constitution, any institution needs to change to reflect the times otherwise we'd forever be living in the shadow of our barbarous ancestors.

RE: How do you see yourself?

You could write a thread as long as War and Peace but never gleam as much of a person than you would in 5 minutes of face-to-face conversation. Obviously it depends on how deep the people are to begin with, but text-based conversation does lose so many of the subtleties of real life.

RE: Your favorite thread is here.

Eccentric British jokesthumbs up

RE: How do you see yourself?

Of course, anything else is just indifference.

RE: Royal wedding in UK

Yet the crown Prince of Bahrain gets an invite. Which is ironic for William to invite a man who would cut your hands off, when William's Mother Princess Diana ran charities for the limbless.
