Science Fiction

If we asked a farmer 200 years ago what he would want if he could have anything, he would probably have asked for a horse twice as strong that ate half the food. He would not have asked for a tractor; he did not know what technology was still to come.

Science fiction predicted many innovations during the fifties and sixties to be realised by the year 2000; of which very few had come to life. None of them foresaw the role of the computer today.

What are we still missing out on? What is to come in the next fifty years?

Relax! It is Saturday.

There was a program on recently looking at this & they showed a clip of Arthur C Clarke filmed in the early sixties where he pretty much predicted what we have today, a brilliant man but tainted by rumours about his private life. thumbs up wave

What do I look forward to? Hopefully in my lifetime.

Translators that work. Able to translate poems.

Polimorphic software. Self modifying software that learns by its mistakes.

Computers able to fix themselves. In possession of redundant circuits, able to bypass faulty circuits and components.

The abolishment of keyboards and mice mouses. Wether by retinal scanning or direct brain wave scanning.

To be able to forsee consequences of decisions

for example, had we known that nuclear power plants were going to be so disastrous - we could have chosen to follow the alternative energy path instead... I'm a dreamer peace
Hi Popeye,

Yes, exactly my point.

In 1968 we saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. A movie about monoliths and a computer, but it was the computer that was the monolith. They guessed a little about speech recognition, but he rest they got wrong. Imagine a computer capable of lip-reading.

Satellite phones were reference by other writers, but nothing like we have today in smart phones.

When are we going to start with real space travel? And when are we going to start colonising other worlds?.
Good night Life,

Sorry for not stickung around. I was going to spend the night in bed with my laptop, but then I got a visitor and we went painting the town red.
wine cheers
Hi PJ1961

We can allready foresee the consequences of most. We just prefer to ignore it, girl. I guess it will get worse as fossil fuels will get scarcer.
