A toast to vegemite
On October 25, 2013 vegemite is celebrating it's 90th birthday. This product isn't always appreciated globally, in fact, many people from overseas wonder how Australians manage to have it as a staple food in their cupboard.
But in recognition of vegemite, I think we should have a toast...
...okay perhaps we will put it on toast.
To date, we have enjoyed 90 billion jars of vegemite in Australia. It's iconic for Australians.... just as a tinnie at a BBQ, our 'such is life' bushranger or even Don Bradman , our star cricketer. It holds an integral part of our culture in it's hands.
The only thing that saddens many Australians is that our famous icon and favourite breakfast spread is now owned by Americans...and they don't seem to appreciate it like we do!
So on behalf of Australia... Happy Birthday, Vegemite!

nice to meet you too
sorry abagail don't mean to
It is quite bitter. Very unique. Most tourists make the mistake of spreading it too thickly onto toast, then they cringe as they eat it. It should be used sparingly.
I will admit that I grew up on it...so I am used to it.
The offer was a sincere one though, if you want some, I will send you some.
"Vegemise", never heard of it.
I am lying, I read an article about AU consumers no being happy with the change in taste.
Anyway, Happy Birthday "Vegemite".
A nice day to you all faithful CS members.
JUST ABOUT TO TASTE IT
WHAT WILL MY VERDICT BE
WAIT AND SEE
I have been eating Vegemite for a tad over 50 years and i love it.
BUT
i do know that unless you were raised from a young age eating it, it can be a required taste.
It certainly is not to everyone's liking.
Good luck and hope you live to tell the story of the time you ate Vegemite to impress a young Aussie lass named Abagail.
Z...he made it out alive. If this was the Olympics... I think he would have almost got gold.
tis just a shame other Aussies did not get involved.
might be out surfing the rip or something.
Happy Birthday To You
Happy Birthday To You

Goodnight Simmo... thank you for coming to the party.
simmo it does look like that it hurts now my thumb lol
Z... And I thought you were the one who was set to be one of the Sopranos, and you were starting out with roses.
I haven't heard of Vegemite but I think we has something similar on the island years ago. Will check it out when I return home.
...however for me, it's an integral part of Australian life.
( And ... pssssst...look at what it did to Mike!)
to all!
Happy Birthday, Vegemite!!!!
I know Marmite, and I love it! I guess it's the same as Vegemite!
I once came to England and a lady had a glas of peanut butter. I meant: Yummy, peanut butter wiith honey would be nice!" she shook her head and meant: " Yuk, how can you eat peanut butter with honey? You must eat it with brown sauce!" I said: "Yuk, how can you eat it with brown sauce??"
I think we like best what we ate in childhood.
But ... brown sauce? Isn't that something you put on meat???
By the way, marmite and vegemite have that in common...both are salty and both should be spread sparingly. Not like Mike did in his photo.
Thanks for this tasty blog!
Italian dishes are delicious, and Greek food is the best.
Although it's midnight over here I will go to the fridge now..
It was the first time I had tried Greek food and I really loved it. So I am going to agree with you.
um... Did the conversation make you hungry?
(I am trying to recall what I ate in Vienna... it escapes me, I ate at the café at the Schönbrunn Palace)
And yes, there is similarity ... they are all bitter and a bit salty.
Coffee in Schloss Schönbrunn? You found the best place over here!
Nonsmoker, yes Bovril was the 3rd one I was looking for. It's the same as Marmite.
I don't believe I've ever had vegemite. But Happy Birthday
Thank you for sharing the party for Vegemite.
