Good News Is No News

They say ‘no news is good news’ but methinks it is the other way around. Maybe that is why good news does not sell newspapers. If our newspapers and TV bulletins were filled with good news, nobody would have bothered.confused

The only time when good news sells is when a celebrity gets married or has a child; and then it has to be a BIG celebrity. Nobody is interested if Jack Sprat’s wife gave birth to a baby boy but if she cuts off her hubby's ding-a-ling then everybody wants to know about it; and even more so if he’s willing to tell (or sell) his story.doh

We want to hear about scandals, conspiracies, air disasters, earthquakes, floods, war casualties, train smashes, and the likes of it. We’re not interested if Ol’ MacDonald treats his wife like a lady, but when he murders, her we want to read all about it. Lady Godiva can ride her horse until she has calluses on her butt and won’t make it into the news until she dies of exposure. Nobody would have known about Jack the Ripper if he handed out religious pamphlets to prostitutes. dunno

It would seem that the bigger the disaster the better the news. We thrive on humiliation, death, maiming, mutilation, and other bad things, thus making it good news.cheering

But if good news is no news, then papers won’t sell. Maybe it does not work the other way around.hmmm

How very true cat,

Its even at the stage that we get people who gain celebrity status from being in the news, and being in the news makes them news-worthy doh

What a money spinner that must be.
thumbs up
Cat Chuck Berry came to mind with the reference to Ding-a-ling

all together now "my ding a. ling my ding a ling I want you to..., ".. you know the rest lol
yes pointless people irrelavant "celebrities" total useless types and negativity glorified as "news"
bloody scandalous I agree with you
Haveyourself a great day In Jo'berg
Cape I meant to type lol laugh
PS;
I also think that the cheapening of the news leads to the cheapening of societal values, Lives become worth less and less the more we read and our own standard for truth seeking becomes muted. It is a very real issue and one that you bring to light very well.

As for Katie perry's new doo and gaga's new piercing wow
Absolutely fabulous, as for that issue on banking corruption; or 3rd world child labour they can go on the back burner ! doh
Hi Non
It is said that there is no such thing as bad publicity. Making the news appear to be more important then the reason for being there. You can check it. When a celebrity gets in the news for abusing his wife, he will soon get a new offer. doh

Hi Allnite
Hmm, I know the song.rolling on the floor laughing

Lousy weather we have today. Not a day to go out.mumbling

Bobbit...wife cut off his....
"ding a ling"
now theres a story sleep
Hi Cat, oh right, we have gusting winds, so the fence I planned to do today will have to wait!
Non
As you say, slowly but surely we become saturated with bad news and eventually bad news will no longer matter to us. I mean, what does it matter if plane crash claimed a 100 lives this morning if only yesterday a ship sank losing all 2000 souls aboard? How long before we stop caring?help
cheers wave
Allnite
It happens from time to time. Did a blog about it some time ago.

I do like to read, but not celeb magazines and I don't have a TV in the house at the moment (renovating, moving etc.)

I don't know most of the so called celebs people are on about, not because I live behind the moon, but simply because I'm not interested in them. dunno

I do think in a lot of cases no news is good news as if I get "the news" from home, the mind blowing stuff is is negative, uh oh but you won't hear me complaining about the good stuff. conversing

Just don't buy rags like that. wink
Minerva,
"I don´t buy newspapers and don´t read the news"
That's very wise indeed, but on a subconscious level whether its background noise from tv and radio or fleeting images from the peripheral vision as we pass news stands and TV'S, I think we are all still dumbed down a little as it is so prevalent in society. wave
Hi KN
In that way no news is certainly good news. When I don't hear from my children for week or three, I don't fret for I know that if things were not good, they'd be very quick to tell me about it.grin

Hi Cat,...I know what you mean,...Ive got a mate, but the only time he texts me is when he has breaking news of the death of someone we know or a car crash out the road or house fire etc dunno ...Good news,..Naah..not worth a textlaugh
Hi Raven
Quite so, Now you know why I never ask a person how he is. If something was pressing he'd soon let you know.laugh

Raven,
I hear ya Pal, Apart from my mother who still thinks I'm five,
The only adult conversation on a phone involves the justification of me being out of pocket or Doing taxi service to or from a funeral laugh

If I mustget rid of all the subconscious clutter, there will be nothing left in my head.rolling on the floor laughing

Your mother like that too? Mine went to her grave believing that I was a 48 year-old adolescent.
laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Cat,
Mothers are like safety belts, Restricting yet reassuring. laugh
Non, you may have a point there. And I miss her nagging.sigh
Hi Cat,

Yeah here in the states, it is all about the candidates who will be running for president in 17 months. Sheesh blah blah blah blah So tired of all of the BS!!! As someone once said: "it's blood and guts that sell papers". "Sensationalism"
Hi Jim
I thought newspapers are to tell us what happened yesterday and to warn us of an impending storm tomorrow.dunno

Those who wish to know what will happen in 17 months from now will do better to visit a fortune teller. laugh
cheers wine
Cat

Not only is the focus of news reporting on the "bad things" as you have mentioned, which make them "good" for news reporting, but the "spin" put on the story is just as important.

The same incident can be reported in several ways that it can make one wonder if it is really the same incident. "Sensationalism" is the name of the game in the competition of news reporting. The more sensational the report, the greater the sales it is likely to attract.
Hi Soc
And then they're not even ashamed to admit it. All that matters is the sales at the end of the day.doh
cheers wave
Hi Cattie, you had a blog deleted? Very inconsiderate of them.giggle
Hi Bea
Not just one, but 3 or 4. All controversial subjects that solicited 'lively' comments.laugh

But inconsiderate indeed.laugh

I'm very attached to my blogs and it is heartbreaking to see them going down the dust pipe. Emotionally devastating. You know how sensitive I am.

Hu Lukie
Yep, almost like here. A fight on a blog attracts a lot of attention.doh

Btw, did you get right with a torrent client?cheers wave
You are right, bloodthirsty crowd hererolling on the floor laughing

I tried the ones Nons and you suggested and for the moment I settled for Tixati. So far its proven a mite better than uTorrent.

If Tixati doesn't pan out then I'll cross to Vuze. Thanks again.handshake
Lukie
I think they're all about the same. I use Filetaxi in conjunction with it to move the download to another folder the moment it is downloaded. It is a bit selfish but it saves a lot of data if you offer nothing to download. That may be where you lose your data. The files in your torrent download folder is automatically shared for others to download.doh

Bob
wave Youuuu! Betcha.
The News Paper or the News Stations only want to report bad news. Oh! Besides someone cutting the ribbon to open up a new place.
And also!
They is just gossip. And s_it stirring!...moping

Heck! They will even turn good news into bad news.
Plus! They say that their news, is the number one station to here it from first..bowing
Hi Angel
It is so, but in all fairness, if I was a reporter and had a choice between reporting that Snow White is alive and well or that the big bad wolf ate the three little pigs, I fear that the big bad wolf is going to win every time.laugh

Bob
snooty Yeah! Right.
I`m alwayes happy to find my mailbox empty. No Bill`s...cool wine
The media are ghouls, vampires, and manipulating us into dough people who unquestioningly get shocked when they tell us to be shocked, go ooh and ah on cue, and loathe and despise who we are told to loathe and despise. Hate them with a passion, distrust them to the point if they said the sun was shining, and I was sitting in a pool of sunshine, I would wonder anxiously if I was just imagining the heat.

Oh, I know, you'll tell me to get off the fence and say what I really think. rolling on the floor laughing
At least in the days when the press was gagged in SA we KNEW it was gagged and that we were being told what the Powers That Be wanted us to know. I'm so sick of the foulness committed in the name of The Free Press, and the way people assure me every stupid far-fetched fake story is gospel, I almost miss those days. very mad
Angel
Look how the press made Diana a celebrity overnight and in the end they were instrumental in her death. Too much of a good thing...uh oh
grin hug
Hi Viking,
I only receive water and services accounts. They mostly end up in the dustbin - unopened.blushing
laugh rolling on the floor laughing
You mention Diana - the day before she died, she was being sneered at, jeered at, and mocked by every paper in the UK. 24 hours later her death was the worst thing that ever happened to this poor country. Uh - come again?
And they proclaim to be the guardians of freedom of speech. Only so they can say what they want to say.doh
hug wave
We better be careful of what we say. Tomorrow the may be onto us. We don't have the circulation to take them on.
