Being around the elderly.....

I socialize with a group of octo---nonagenarians here at Mickie D's, where I get the endless java for a buck, and the decent wifi. They have a grand time with themselves, and I have learned a good deal just listening. Topic number one is their medical care/conditions. But in this New England town, where many, exept perhaps for military service, have rarely ventured 100km away, a lot of talk is about their and others' families. Some, many, have been here since our revolution, or earlier. Do you know tall Mary Lou? Is she a Seeker, or a Reynold? No she is a Pendleton, but married a Lynch. Our parents are first generation here, and we have lost touch with folks in the old country, so my elder pals' experiences are so foreign to me, but quaintly of great interest. Aa-V.

What Is Like To Be A SINGLE MOM

In my years of planning, deciding and figuring out
the best for my boys alone.
I came to realised that it's nothing even I knew it's so hard being mom and dad.
Why I said so...
Because being a mom is the unselfish role we can be
to our children. This is the whole package we can
take it with us dear moms....so CARRY ON YOU ARE DOING GREAT
JOB...cheers heart1

Watching a Kid

Ha ha my son left his 12 yr old son with me for a week. I haven't watched a boy child in almost 50 years. When the divas were little I was younger and still in the working force with much more energy or patience than I have as a retiree. I was a bit scared at first. The family left ALL the Christmas leftovers with me since my man child eats a LOT. That actually does my heart good is having a good eater in the house since I have to fight with the tiny furball to eat, she hates to be bothered with eating.

So far it's been fun. I give him an early morning chore and when he is done he can do anything he wants all the rest of the day. Mostly he wants to game, which gives me time to game. Him on the comupter and me mine. Then we watch a movie together. I get to enjoy his laughter. At dinner time he cleans his plate, that makes me very happy. Also nice to have someone to cook for.

He also talks my ear off but I can deal with that, harsh as it is. Crappy Pandemic keeps me from taking him places so we are stuck in the house with each other. He begged to stay with me which makes me feel mighty special.

One day my son texted to tell me to make sure he joined a zoom program for learning and I said No Way Jose - I'm not a practicing disciplinarian, I'm just a Nai Nai that gets to spoil her grandchild and I"M loving it.

I'm only 3 days in - hope it keeps going this well. Today I'm going to teach him how to play backgammon.

Fried Apples

I'm not an apple gal hence Bella the tiny Chi has Not been given any either. Mom gave me a couple of apples saying she fried hers which I've never done. I peeled, chopped, cut a few raw pieces into Bella's food and hollered at her about 15 times to eat. I'm not sure what her problem is but she is not the least bit fond of eating which caused me to yell in a stern voice "EAT" repeatedly daily every time I feed her. Each time she smells each piece then starts to walk away - "EAT" she turns rinses and repeats to walk away. On the 15th yell she succumbs and cleans her dish.

I fried the apples according to Mom's recipe, fixed mine and the Chi's dishes, sat dows together to eat and Bella cleaned her plate before me. Say what??? She then ate two more bowls. I thought they were good but the only time I would ever fry them again is if someone gave me apples and that doesn't happen often nor buy them.

What will be interesting is if I do buy apples to cook for that damn 3 pound life of another species that I've fallen so in love with the last 12 years. No wonder one of my exes used to say if he ever gets to come back it would be one of my little dogs. I keep asking Bella if she is Ben but I get no recogniction yet if it is possible then he got to be a lucky son of a b*tch.

Traditions

I'm not big on following my family traditions mostly because I follow the traditions of where I am at - at the time. Traditions are different and I seem to like most of them.

On New Year's Day I think I will cook Mom's traditional meal which is supposed to bring in money, success, prosperity, good health and I forget if anything else. I have to have her tell me again what all it is but what I remember is cooked greens, black eye peas, pork (I think) 12 green grapes (one for each month) - I forgot what else. My daughter who has only lived in Florida follows my Mom's tradition. I've been so non-traditional that I can hardly remember any of the other traditions from my friends. Then Mom can take some to Dad and they both get to celebrate one more family tradition.

I know one thing I don't have to worry about anymore is hang overs. If I ever did have a tradition it was to not party so hard on New Year's Eve. Now I sleep through it.

As long as nothing bad happens in the next five days - I get to close 2019, my first year of retirement, feeling totally blessed with time to enjoy what I worked for since I was 15. Sadly it was a very hard year on my parents.

All I Want 4 Christmas...

I'm a simple man really. I don't need much and these days I expect even less. I find that it minimalizes the potential for disappointment and maximizes square footage!

I don't have much to recycle or toss in the bin after opening Christmas gifts. Sketch pads and pencils ruled the day. I fought an urge to protest a gift but it turns out that I needed it more than I thought.

The thing that made my day though was a simple gift card. Initially, I was thinking that in order to put it to good use, I would have to go shopping...and maybe somewhere I didn't want to. The gift card giver lives on the other coast so I thought that it was purchased at some chain store or restaurant with the assumption that the chain was 3,000 miles long.

To my surprise, the card was for a local establishment, and one that I frequently patronize!
confused

That means the card giver had to do a bit of detective work and that the card had to travel 6,000 miles to get right back to where it started! laugh

The card giver is clever and thoughtful...and my sister. If I could rewind the clock, I think I would ask Santa for just one thing...to be more like her.
