Dreaming Within A Dream

I keep wanting to dream within my dreams~
Direct my subconscious self as I do my conscious self.

As I watch the dream unfold~
I can't stay in the background.

Yet~I find myself, standing on the sidelines~
Unable to be the director of my dreams.

I attempt to voice my concerns~
Only to find I silence myself.

Can I not make the decisions I want and need~
Do I silence myself out of fear or anger.

Dreaming within a dream~
Awaken, renewed, yet~still confused.

Walls

What are you looking at?
Why are you so confused?

The first time you've seen one?
Do you not have any yourself?

No, not hiding secrets.
Nor unpleasant memories.

Why is it important for you to know?
When did I give you permission to ask?

How long ago was it built?
What caused it to be done?

It came from always giving.
Never taking from others.

Past mistake made.
Chances taken.

Yes, it's quite thick.
No, you can't break it.

There is no key for that.
Destroyed forever.

Lonely? Sometimes.
Happy? Most days.

The defiant wall is needed.
Now go away, before you break the mortar.
Holding it all together.
Go away from my wall.

Still Unbroken

Broken bones, broken hearts
Stripped down and torn apart
A little bit of rust, I'm still runnin'
Countin' miles, countin' tears
Twisted road, shifting gears
Year after year, it's all or nothing.

But I'm not home, I'm not lost
Still holdin' on to what I've got
Ain't much left Lord, there's so much that's been stolen.
I guess I've lost everything I had
But I'm not dead, at least not yet
Still alone, still alive, still unbroken.

Never captured, never tamed
Wild horses on the plains
You can call me lost, I call it freedom
I feel the spirit in my soul
There's something Lord I can't control
I'm never givin' up while I'm still breathin'.

Like the wind, like the rain
It's all runnin' through my veins
Like a river pourin' down into the ocean
I'm out here on the street
But I'm standin' on my feet
Still alive, still alone, still unbroken.

Gifted Hands

I remember the day that he came in
I can't believe how long it's been
Like a poet he began to play
Just an old friend that hung with the gang
A drinkin' man he had no plan
But he played the 'bird, played it for free.

'Cause I know he's here- he's everywhere
Take a look around and you will see
That cross we bear, it's in the air
Lord we thank you for those gifted hands.

There are demons we live with every dat
That tear at our hearts and take us away
To another place, some of us don't get back
These words are for the hands of the workin' man
Who believes in himself and he understands
Love, hope and faith are The Maker's plan.

One day we'll all take that ride,
And with those gifted hands I know you'll fly.

Oh Baby, You Made Me That Way

If I seem like a little too much to handle
If I laugh like an angel on Judgment Day
If I burn like the sparks from a roman candle
Oh, baby you made me that way.

If my heart starts to pound
Like a bass drum drummin'
Like the beat when an old
Sun record plays
And if I turn my back when the train is comin'
Oh, baby you made me that way.

I used to play it safe,
Never thinkin' what I might miss.
Who knew there'd come a day
When I would come alive like this
With just one kiss?

If I choose the edge over the middle
If I moan at the sound of a certain name
And if I lean just this side of illegal
Oh baby, you made me that way.

Waiting On Sundown

Jimmy was waiting on Shelby Jean
In the parking lot at the Dairy Queen
He knew she's gonna be there soon
Then they'll blow this town like a cheap balloon.

She came in cryin' this morning at the store
Said "I swear Jimmy, I just can't take any more".
So he quit his job and he drew his pay
Now he's helping Shelby make her getaway.

Oh sittin' on go
Waitin' on sundown
No more beatings to be denied
No more bruises that makeup can't hide.

All these years she tried to love that man
But all he ever gave her was the back of his hand
Now Jimmy is a young boy, just out of his teens
So many things he still hasn't seen
But he's old enough to know wrong from right
That's why he's helpin' Shelby make a break tonight.

Drove all night, drove all day
Jimmy listened to everything Shelby had to say
How she suffered at her lover's hand
He said, "Honey, I wanna change that if I can".

They pulled over to take a little rest
Shelby put her head down on Jimmy's chest
And she could hear the beatin' of his heart
And it sounded like the rhythm of a brand new start
And she's gonna let him know
Oh, she's just waitin' on sundown.

They're just waitin' on sundown.

Love's Philosophy

Over the mountains
And over the waves;
Under the fountains,
And under the graves;

Under floods that are deepest,
Which Neptune obey;
Over rocks that are steepest;
Love will find out the way.

You may train the eagle
To stoop to your fist;
Or you may inveigle
The phoenix of the east;

The lioness, you may move her
To give over her prey;
But you'll never stop a lover:
He will find out his way.

Choices

On one hand, there is this option.
On the other hand, there is that option.

Does this fork in the road lead to satisfaction?
Does that fork in the road lead to disaster?

Can this be the one decision that will harm me?
Can that be the one decision that will elevate me?

How to ensure that I am choosing wisely.
How to ensure that I am choosing correctly.

When faced with this choice or that;
Do I analyze or agonize?

I have no answers from my mind, my soul or psyche;
Yesterday I flipped a coin, today I run in circles.

Tomorrow is just another day and maybe by then;
I might just make it a good choice; at least that is what I pray.

Honoring Back

I have seen the truth
And have held my brother's hand
Bleeding my way through dust and wind
In a strange and foreign land.

Miles in the darkness
With courage by our side.
We brought the battle to them
So people can sleep safe at night.

You honored me with your strength
And your faith
With your fearlessness and grace
And through it all we held the flag
You honored me
Now I honor back.

How can I repay a priceless sacrifice?
Because something short of everything
Just wouldn't seem polite.

I honor back with a poem
And pray it will make you feel right
When you are wrong
'Cause you're a hero
Even if it feels as if you're gone.

With all my heart
With all my love
And pray it might be enough
So you will know I understand
You honored me
Now I honor back.

Storm

There was a time that I believed
That nothing could happen to me
I was in a place, deep in a hole
So dark I could not see.

Everyday the rain won't fall
The shine will come out and shine on us all
There's a light at the end for you my friend
Oh take it from me, the storm will someday end.

So much has changed inside our hearts
We can tell it's tearin' us apart
We share your pain and feel your hurt
But holy water cleanses the dirt.

The sun is going to shine
And the rain won't fall
The storm is going to pass

Yes,you were, oh so stuck in a hole.

Every day the rain won't fall
The sun will come out and shine on us all
A light at the end for you, my friend.
Take it from me
The storm will someday end.
