Arizona Winds (Tribute)

It looks like half the real estate
In all of Arizona
Have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And blown into the sky

Like some dark angry entourage
Was working overtime
To stir the lifeless desert soil
And laugh as it blows by

The wind is tearing blossoms
From the swaying apple tree
And after several hours
Of it's wailing, haunted voice

"My soul is angry and brittle
While I wait for rain or calm
But a higher call than my own mind
Will make that final choice".

The windmill groans with longing
As it strains against the brake
While that pushing, pressing wind insists
That it must bend and turn

Like people who believe they're right
And blow and push and shove
Until your calm has blown away
And you pray that peace returns

Contentious wind... that blow hard kind
That rakes your quiet mind
Until your nerves are frayed and raw
And tensions mount inside

Lord... let me be a quiet breeze
That gently blows through lives
To cool, soothe a fevered brow
Let me ease their rocky ride

And if the breeze must push at times
When folks have missed your mark
Then- let it hold the scent of rain
That soothes like Gilead's balm

So words don't sting like driven dirt
And love is always there
The wind of your Holy Spirit
Returning peace and calm.

Shadow Demon

There a demon dwells in the shadows
Breathes winter long and tough
Daring a puncher to pack up and quit
Or stick because he hasn't had enough

There a demon casts a long shadow
Each moment a cowboy must choose
Twixt throwing his rope before the darkness
Or face one more wrap and refuse

There a demon hides in that shadow
Waits on a hand not to care
About tying one down needing tending
Or ride on pretending she's not there

There a demon carries his shadow
Until a man becomes what he should
Worth every second he's horseback
Or lost in the dark shadows for good.

Sad The Sensitive Artist

Poets and singers- that curious few
So proud to show off the fine work they do
They suffer and labor creating their art
Expressing a message that comes from the heart

They love to perform and put on a display
The wonderful talent that God cast their way
A lyrical message, each artist records
In CD's and book for admiring hordes

The magazine editors back East and out West
They send review copies and pray for the best
High praise they are seeking, just love will fulfill
Their need to be thrust on top of the hill

Reviewers be warned, though you laud A to Z
Any negative word will be all that they see
They'll pout and they'll cry and get angry and mad
Their sensitive egos so troubled and sad

If once they were friends, they'll be friendly no more
You've kicked them outside and you've bolted the door
An honest appraisal will build but a wall
'Tis better to mention their names not at all.

Bagpipes Crying

Stumbled across an old green box in my grandfather's house
Inside was a cross, some old dog tags
And a picture from when he was shipping out
So I showed it to him and said, " Tell me about those days"

When he looked inside, he closed his eyes, and all he could say was
"I hear bagpipes crying Amazing Grace,
Omaha Beach and her crashing waves
Old Glory draped like Heaven's mercy over the fallen sons

I see all the heroes who were willing to fight
In the name of freedom, laying down their lives
And praying God's grace would keep us safe from harm
Until they brought us boys back home".

Those words to a girl that became a woman
Now I'm ankle deep in this Persian sand
And everyday I'm giving all I can
Because I'm damn proud to be an American.

Yeah, I've made some friends and I've lost some too
When I think about what they gave for me and you.

I hear those bagpipes crying Amazing Grace
Tears rolling down a mother's face
Old Glory draped like Heaven's mercy over the fallen sons

And praying God's grace would keep you safe from harm
Until they bring you boys back home.

Lodestone

Does anyone know the pain
of hearing again and again~
You're the best! A great person!
I hope you find that special someone!

In time, I suppose it could happen~
That elusive special someone.
Won't hold my breath in anticipation~
Nor belittle myself for trepidation.

Why pursue me? What is that you see?
The pretty words, the heartfelt gesture.
Without even trying, I've built you up~
Lo and behold! The "friendship" talk!

Its better, I guess, to know~
Where I stand, not a viable option.
You've gotten what you needed~
I can be shunted~discarded to the shelf.

Funny thing is, I will always be there~
In the background.
A half-remembered soul,
Quietly waiting, until needed.

I've no more expectations~
No more dreams of love.
I know that I can give,
I know there will never be a return.

I can be happy alone~
There for others, an optional option.
Sometimes~I am lonely~
I have myself and my heart.

A Brighter Day

She fell asleep one quiet dawn
And awoke to a brighter day
In the Land of Fresh Beginnings
With the pain all swept away.

As her eyes went wide with wonder
And her understanding grew,
For she stood in God's meadow
Green and fresh and wet with dew.

And her ears pricked quickly forward
As a voice spoke soft and low
Saying, "Welcome to my stable
I have called you here, you know".

"For I saw that you were weary,
And I sought to end your fear,
So I brought you to my meadow
There is nothing frightening here".

"You may roam across my pastures,
You may run or you may rest,
And old friends wait here to greet you,
Down the meadow to the West".

Then the mare's head went up gaily,
And she nickered eagerly,
As though calling someone to her,
And she pranced excitedly.

And the golden sun's reflection
Gave her coat a copper hue,
And she paused for just a moment
By a pool so clear and blue.

Then the mare who used to tremble
Felt a calmness fill her soul
As she started down the meadow
-And beside her walked a foal.

Philosophy

Well, I read the evening paper
And it scared me near in two,
With its column-long palaver
About the world to do.

Seems there's little wars all over,
And crimes and violence--
And you know I got to thinking
That it surely makes no sense.

Why should neighbor shoot at neighbor
And countries rattle swords?
I'm sure they've all forgotten
That this whole big world's the Lord's.

Why, HE made the sun to warm us,
And the evenings just for rest,
And the mountains filled with grandeur,
And mankind filled with zest.

And HE made a horse to ride on,
And hills to ride him through;
A star-filled night to dream on,
And a wealth of things to do!

Well, I'd just like to tell the generals
And Presidents and such,
That if they'd just cut out the haggling
And get back into touch

With the things that God intended...
Like the beauty of the day,
Or the murmur of the forest
Or the smell of new mown hay.

If they'd just look at all the wonder
Of nature all around,
And perhaps they'd stop all their feudin'
And we'd all have peaceful ground.

Fragile

Capable and strong
Survivor of all that's wrong
Yet delicate as linen lace
Fragile with new challenges to face

About this poem:
Often life seems to have all negative intersect at the same relative time in
one's life and no matter how much stamina we have we reach the edge
of shattering. This is a tribute to those people and an understanding of
their unique plight.

Along Came You

Because the world is on a string
Because the world don't mean a thing
The sky above and hell below
Can't stop the way I feel.. So let it show.

Like a baby's breath or the day we die
There are times in life that don't come twice
Then along came you and shined your light
Illuminated...My darkest night.

When all the children come to play
When all the wolves are kept at bay
When the whole world now is on it's own
Can't stop the way I feel, so let it go.

Secrets Of The Day

I hear that life has no reason
Telling lies like I want to believe
There's no room here for pleasing
And no time to explain what I mean.

Burning bright all through the night now
For today I will lead the way
Burning bright it's time to find out
The secrets of the day.

I see the days with detection
Of a time that has fallen for me
With the love of perfection
Until then I am down on my knees

I hear that life has a reason
And today I just want to believe.
