Love Is The Answer

Life can be a lonely experience
If there is no one with whom you are close
That's the nature of human existence
For which some, sad to say, get no repose

Despite all our material wealth
And our intellectual wisdom
Although we may have good physical health
Our lives can still be filled with boredom

Loving someone who loves you in return
Is a most wonderful experience
Beside the respect from others you earn
This feeling of love is par excellence

If in your life you are seeking meaning
And find that it poses a dilemma
You can finally end all your searching
And be assured that Love is the answer

Love Is A Decision

Love is not based on a feeling only
There must also be a clear decision
Passionate feelings may die off early
Showing it was just infatuation

One should not need another as a crutch
But be able to stand on one's feet
This will allow each other space as such
And enrichen the sharing when both meet

A love relationship has its demands
It does not ensure smooth sailing always
Be mindful of this in each circumstance
And it will help you survive the rough days

The one that you love should be your best friend
Someone with whom you can share everything
A person upon whom you can depend
In situations that can be trying

As time passes, both of you will change
For change is inevitable in life
Do not consider this as something strange
Learn to adjust and avoid any strife

True love is the most precious emotion
That a person can engage in sharing
It fills the heart with blissful elation
Giving one's life a rich sense of meaning

About this poem:
"Love is a decision, it is a judgement, it is a promise. If love were only a feeling, there would be no basis for the promise to love each other forever. A feeling comes and it may go. How can I judge that it will stay forever, when my act does not involve judgement and decision."

- Erich Fromm - (The Art of Loving)

“But let there be spaces in your togetherness. And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.”

Kahlil Gibran – (The Prophet)

The Beat Of Life Goes On

Mom got up early and is in the kitchen
Preparing the breakfast for everyone
Dad's still in the bathroom and is shaving
And the beat of life goes on

The kids are busy getting set for school
One is still trying to get homework done
The others are taking things really cool
And the beat of life goes on

Now all sit around the breakfast table
To fuel themselves for the day's action
Each consumes what he or she is able
And the beat of life goes on

Dad leaves the home for his workplace early
Mom patiently checks the kids one by one
To ensure that for school each is ready
And the beat of life goes on

Dad is at work earning his salary
Kids are at school getting education
Mom is at home with some chores she's busy
And the beat of life goes on

It's suppertime now for the family
And it's filled with lively conversation
Each one partakes of the meal heartily
And the beat of life goes on

After supper, mom tidies the kitchen
Then joins the rest watching television
Later, for next day each starts preparing
And the beat of life goes on

The kids get busy with their assignment
Mom and Dad continue to linger on
They chat a bit about now the day went
And the beat of life goes on

Then finally they all head off to bed
For much needed sleep and relaxation
To refresh each for the new day ahead
And the beat of life goes on

Mom got up early and is in the kitchen
Preparing the breakfast for everyone
Dad's still in the bathroom and is shaving
And the beat of life goes on

Self Discipline

What has to be done must be done
Lazing around just will not pay
Grab hold of yourself and move on
Do what you have to do today

Despite the mood you may be in
Know time and tide wait for no one
Get busy, start the ball rolling
If not, you will be overrun

Hold on and sustain the effort
Though you may not feel to do so
Stand firmly for no matter what
Be assured success will follow

Falling In Love

Falling in love for the first time
can be very exciting at the start
But such love is usually not long-lasting
and may lead to a broken heart

A person whose heart has been broken
seeks a love that is more mature
When found such love heals the broken heart
and is more beautiful and likely to endure

A Flower - Children's Poem

I am a pretty flower
all dressed up in blue
I love the falling rain
and the sunshine too

My mother is the plant
She feeds me every day
and keeps me looking bright
so I'm happy and gay

I have some friends
who come to visit me
one is a lovely butterfly
the other is a honey bee

I feed them with my nectar
and then they fly away
I tell them to come back
on another day

About this poem:
I wrote this poem for my nephew's eight year old daughter to encourage her to write poetry. She has an excellent command of English at her age.
Writing this made me recall some of the poems I learned at school as a child. I hope I have succeeded, at least to some extent, in capturing the innocence and joyful feeling of childhood. I also hope it would bring out the child in some of you; I would like your comments from such a perspective since this is a children's poem. Or perhaps you can share it with children, get their comments and post them. Thank you!

Nature's Lullaby

Gazing upward into the night
The stars are twinkling in the sky
Painting a very peaceful sight
As time goes slowly drifting by

The moon is quietly glowing
Amid the darkened clouds around
Her soft light is most comforting
Gently bathing things on the ground

The night air is cool and soothing
Like a balm to a weary soul
I feel it as I am breathing
Calming me and making me whole

Now I feel a quiet delight
After gazing at the night sky
I shall sleep peacefully tonight
Caressed by Nature's Lullaby

SUNSHINE

Sunshine, life's primordial sustainer
Channeling to all, the sun's energy
Plant, animal, insect, fish or other
Without sunshine, not one of them would be

Sunshine can uplift your mood and spirit
When you are feeling gloomy and depressed
It can cheer you up to rise above it
And impart a pleasant feeling of zest

Sunshine brightens the colours of flowers
Making them come alive in their glory
It possesses some magical powers
That transforms plainness into beauty

Sunshine on the gently rippling water
Creates a display of sparkling diamonds
Reverberating like silent laughter
That induces blissful joy in response

The Pond In Its Glory

Gentle ripples on the water
Set in motion by a slight breeze
Move quietly on the pond's surface
With gracefulness and effortless ease

A fishing bird flies in suddenly
Skimming the pond's surface with its feet
Then dives headfirst into the water
In its search of a meal to eat

Something just broke the water's surface
Forcing me to full attention
I can see now an eye and the nose
Of a fledgling baby caiman

A bird's neck appears from the water
In its beak, there's a struggling fish
One gulp and the fish disappears
That was indeed a tasty dish

Water lily pads bob up and down
In harmony with the rippling water
Their crimson blooms standing upright
Sprinkled among the lilies cluster

Feeding close to the water's edge
There's a roving group of small fishes
They nibble on the morsels they find
Among roots of water grasses

I treasure sitting here in silence
Observing the pond in its glory
It fills me with such peacefulness
And deep feelings of tranquillity

The Story of Life

To exist, a living thing must be born
Whether animal, plant or some other
This marks the initial stage it builds on
And heralds its life that follows after

After its birth, there is the growth process
Which requires adequate nutrition
In this vital stage, there must be success
In order to attain maturation

A living thing in full maturity
Displays its species characteristics
These serve to define its identity
In testimony of its uniqueness

Living things are programmed internally
To keep their species continuation
To make this action a reality
They engage in acts of reproduction

Living things cannot live eternally
The process of decay cannot be stopped
Bodies that once were quite firm and healthy
With time they become shriveled and dried up

The action of decay is precursor
That signals the final stage which is death
For living organisms wherever
This occurs when they take their final breath
