The Hummingbird

Incredibly fast and yet so tiny
Dressed in feathers that refract the sunlight
Radiating such colourful beauty
Producing a true birdwatcher's delight

Suspending a living feathery mass
Wings beating at eighty times per second
Create a blur which for a short time lasts
Then in an instant later it is gone

Busily sipping each flower's nectar
As you rapidly flit from bloom to bloom
Viewing you in your glorious splendour
Chases away any feelings of gloom

A true master of acrobatic flight
Forward, backward and even upside down
What a marvellous captivating sight
Leaving the viewer speechless and spellbound

All bedecked in luminescent feathers
Blessed with a spectacular flying mode
Radiating such beautiful colours
That is the magic of the hummingbird

About this poem:
Trinidad, my native island, is sometimes referred to as the “Land of the Hummingbird” because more than sixteen different species of hummingbird have been recorded on the island.
The indigenous Native Americans, the Arawaks, named the island, "Iere", which, in their language, means "Land of the Hummingbird".
Two hummingbirds are shown on the island's coat of arms.

Beauty In Imperfection

The rugged bark of an old tree
with imperfection due to its cracks
is a wondrous thing of beauty
and it's the imperfection that attracts

We know that a star-shaped flower
does not make a perfect star
Yet it has a certain loveliness
that induces a sense of wonder

A hand-crafted ceramic bowl
because of its asymmetry
is a wonderful artefact
that is valued very highly

An old-time cobblestone street
has a unique charm and quaintness
due to its imprecise pattern
that gives it it's loveliness

Perfection is not easy to attain
and even more difficult to sustain
Beauty lies in imperfection
and they are a natural combination

In Defense Of The Rain

Some folks like to complain
And are very fickle
They fume when rain is falling
And fret at a mere drizzle

Wild birds and animals
They all need the rain
Which gives them water
For their lives to sustain

The plants and the trees
And all the lovely flowers
For them to grow and flourish
They also need the showers

The food crops that are grown
To provide food for us all
Each of them would perish
If the rain did not fall

So please think of these things
Before you start complaining
And creating a lot of fuss
The next time rain is falling

To Our Lady Diana

You are a mother and a Christian soldier
Always ready to stand up for another
You have made your mark here on Poetry Corner
With your cheerfulness, wit and sense of humour

Your poetry displays a deep sincerity
That's a projection of your inner beauty
We know you have your responsibility
And we wish you will always be happy

About this poem:
There has been a lot of activity recently here on Poetry Corner. Several of the more senior poets seem to have taken a break. Let's hope they return soon. In the meantime, several new poets have appeared. This piece is a welcome to them. Poetry is larger than any individual or group of indivduals. The show must go on. I invite all poets, including the new, to post their views on Poetry Corner. We can all benefit from each others' views. Thanks!

These Sinful Lips

Embedded image from another site

I shouldn't but I do
Have command of my lovers hands,
Though I don't need their tanned advances
Or their delightfully soft demands.

Flecked with yellow and cinnamon
His lovely warm brown eyes,
Are the charming and most disarming
Keys to my demise.

For I drown in their soft beauty
Regardless of where he reposes ,
So he plies me with Belgian chocolates
Wrapped up in the reddest of roses.

Trapped here within this blackest of sin
That surrounds me when he is gone,
I know,
It's wrong,
His gold ring tells me so,
But when he begs, 'Be my other woman'
Then my lips just won't whisper 'no'.

Spiritual but not Religious

Spiritual but not religious
what does it really mean
This claim is quite prevalent
on today's scene

Is it just a new age fad
or is it contradictory
If in fact it is the latter
then what is the discrepancy

Religion has divided a person
into body, mind and spirit
It claims it seeks the spirit's welfare
and is sincere about it

If religion really deals with the spirit
then why is there such a fuss
that many still continue to claim
they are spiritual but not religious

The Magnificent Air

Invisible air links all living things
Whether animals, plants or some other
Throughout Nature, this message rings
Living things share the air with each other

Food and water that animals take in
And oxygen from the air they inhale
Provide energy after processing
And carbon dioxide which they exhale

From carbon dioxide, plants take carbon
And incorporate it in their structure
This is through photosynthesis action
Which releases oxygen thereafter

These actions are repeated endlessly
Asserting the link between living things
It's a glorious marvellous unity
And the magnificent song Nature sings

About this poem:
The air we breathe is probably one of the most taken for granted things. It unites all living things. It levels the playing field. Some persons may consider human life to be superior to plant life. Yet, plants play a vital role in sustaining human life by replenishing the oxygen content of the air. They assimilate, into their structure, the carbon from the carbon dioxide human beings exhale and release the oxygen through photosynthesis, thereby replenishing the air's oxygen, which is vital for human existence

Best Friends

Their names were Butch, Huck and Max,
The best three dogs I've known.
Butch I knew at four years old
The other two when grown.

Butch was pitbull boxer mix,
As smart as he was strong.
Could say "I love you," plainly
I heard him, can't be wrong.

Our yard full of dogs one night,
I let him out to scare,
Down the steps flew like the wind,
Dogs flying ev'rywhere.

Disappeared one rainy night,
We figured for the ring.
I'm sure he was a winner cause,
Dog fighting was his thing.

Huck, another pitbull mix,
I think part kangaroo.
Could jump so high, almost fly,
And loyal through and through.

Had to give him up one day,
Apartment we did move.
Not an onside dog, not Huck,
He quickly showed to prove.

Gave him to a farmer friend,
He lived for many years.
Blind and deaf, by car was hit,
I did not hide my tears.

Max was German Shepherd mix,
And smartest of them all.
Saved grandaughter harm twice,
He answered ev'ry call.

Then he turned a biter at,
The ripe old age of ten.
Had to give him back to pound,
Hard tears I shed back then.

These noble beasts, loved them well,
Such treasured memories.
Who could not feel fortunate,
With best friends such as these.
