It's not so much about BMI...it's about how healthy your heart is. Do you get one hour's exercise a day? Do you get your heart rate up to about the 120 range for a bit? Most people die of heart disease. What are you doing about it?
While BMI is a rather blunt measurement of overall health, it's also useful as it a derivative of one's life style.
Sure, one can be naturally thin, an ectomorth, with a low BMI and totally unfit. But the majority of people are mesomorths and BMI is a good measure of their life style choices as diet and level of physical activity.
As to CVD mortality... To a certain age, women tend to die of sex-specific cancer more, than of cardio-vasclar diseases. Oestrogen is protective against CVD and a risk factor for cancer. And there's nothing you can do at that fact.

Regular brisk walking, sometimes when asked i run with my girl.
well, allthough I don't eat too much I am fat, because all the water and beer I drink won't leave the body. I'm thirsty most of the time, and of course why drink water when you can drink beer, if the effect is the same. They call it edema, so I have to wear elastic socks. I was born with it, also with pddnos, a kind of autism. So I ain't perfect, but I can make love as the best stallion in the stable.
