The Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog). In a cold winter, the waterfalls freeze spectacularly and in warmer times it's like the ice age only left 5 minutes ago.
And there's a tidy little fish and chip shop in Brecon town centre.
What would it have taken to save the black rhino from extinction?
War?
Killing people?
I don't know what the black rhino's environment was like, but if they were poached by people desperate to feed their families, how could poverty have been tackled in time?
Or was it unstoppable greed and corruption?
It's maybe easy to be an armchair advocate, but what were the practicalities of trying to save the black rhino - for surely people tried.
A sad day, though. Thankyou for raising this issue DJ.
That's interesting, the way your (then) friend felt it would reflect badly on her if you spoke to someone.
It's like she needed affirmation of herself through her friends, rather than her inner self. I'm now wondering if this kind of prejudice is rooted in feelings of self-inadequacy, rather than other-inadequacy. I suppose I already knew that, that it's maybe obvious, but perhaps it's become a little more concrete for me.
Perhaps awareness of that dynamic provides us with an avenue for tackling prejudice.
In my village we have two small trailer sites which are rented out to the Fairground people. The owner is a twit, but his wife and kids lovely. There's never been any issue with any of the tenants and I've done a fair amount of work for some of them. I've found the families to be like any other.
There are also a group of Gypsies who collect scrap metal for recycling which is very handy for those of us who need to get rid of stuff, but don't have the means of doing so. I make a point of stripping stuff down, so I'm not expecting them to dispose of my rubbish that's not useful to them.
Why do you think travellers in England can't be Gypsy and must all be non-Gypsy travellers?
My daughter is Gypsy living here with me in Wales. We live together. She's not a different social class from me, but she does have different ethnic roots from me from her paternal side of her family.
Wouldn't it be up to the Irish Travellers, or Gypsies to decide for themselves whether they are ethnically distinct? I'm feeling a bit narky at your suggestion that my daughter can't own her ethnicity from both sides of her family.
Well, for some people the diagnosis may be useful. It may help them 'own' their difficulties, or a model may provide a way of conceptualising what is going on for them.
It may be that some people feel their lives are chaotic, confusing and frightening and handing over control to someone in 'authority', or the feeling of being looked after serves a purpose.
Perhaps if there was more common knowledge and understanding of mental illness, it would reduce the negative aspects of diagnoses and labelling. Perhaps having the choice of using models, or not, is also an aspect of taking personal control which people shouldn't be denied.
That sounds remarkably like you're making the common mistake that the very rare multiple personality disorder is included in the schizophrenias.
Schizophrenia means 'split with reality', that is the schizophrenias come under the category of psychoses. Multiple personality disorder is also classed as a psychosis, but multiple personality disorder is not one of the schizophrenias.
I work with a chap who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He's lovely and probably the person I most like working with and the work colleague who is most interesting to talk with. He occasionally loses concentration. He just needs a little nudge when that happens, or some simple coping strategies like writing things down, rather than trying to hold things in memory.
Bear in mind, bipolar disorder, like all 'mental illnesses' are based on models. A psychiatrist will look at a collection of 'symptoms' and see which model they can best shove that person into.
Psychiatry is beginning to move away from diagnoses to more productive 'formulations' where no label is assigned, but 'symptoms', or traits are addressed for each individual.
RE: most beautiful place you've traveled
It's a shame this isn't a picture thread.
