Did the Great Biblical Flood actually occur?

Its a topic to discuss like any other....roll eyes

Did the Great Biblical Flood actually occur?

Language barrier? confused

Did the Great Biblical Flood actually occur?

Thats another problem. The Ark...just refuses to be found. Or it's been found too many times, in completely different locations. A dozen different people claiming to have found the Ark in a dozen different places is even more embarrassing than not finding it at all. roll eyes

Did the Great Biblical Flood actually occur?

It isnt feasible. The water would have to come from outside of the atmosphere. confused

Did the Great Biblical Flood actually occur?

Well I wasn’t present for WW2 either but I can safely assume it occurred without me. This flood, I don’t think so but I lean towards localized. grin

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

Charles came from a family of people who, while Christians, were not very orthodox (and I would certainly not call him "devout". His grandfather Erasmus was probably an atheist, albeit not openly.

Darwin himself did study theology to become a country preacher, but not out of any high calling, but out of convenience.
He never did become an atheist, at least not openly, but he certainly did not believe in a loving God anymore - he had observed the cruelty of nature all his life, and then perhaps the final blow was the death of his beloved daughter.

The story that Darwin recanted on his deathbed is not true. His wife, who was most definitely a Christian, would have told the world about it, and she did no such thing.

But Darwin was generally a very private man, and he was not known to make broad, sweeping statements about religion.

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

The dates of a number of ancient cultures (such as those of Egypt and Mesopotamia) have been established by the analysis of historical documents supported by carbon dating to be older than the alleged date of the Flood. The flood, had it occurred, should also have produced large-scale effects spread throughout the entire world. Erosion should be evenly distributed, yet the levels of erosion in, for example, the Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains differ significantly. I can keep going...

Even a modern day natural disaster on the level of a Tsunami does not produce rain at 6 inches a minute. You are comparing something that is fictional with an actual meteorological occurrence.

Floods have occurred all over the world at different times. Why do we see no break in culture for the Egyptians or the Mesopotamians? Why is there no water damage upon the pyramids of Giza?

You use your faith to discern between reality and fiction. That’s fine. I just won’t do that. My educational background is in the realm of science so that wont work for me.

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

I was never mad. I was merely pointing out that this information (just like the missing link) has been in the hands of scientists for YEARS. It’s not as if someone sprung this on the scene a couple weeks ago.

Yes, clearly there are several authors and probably not who we have traditionally given credit to. You can not use the bible to substantiate the bible. That is an exercise in futility.

You think having a lot of kids tagging along and lack of water would cause people to wander for 40 years? I don’t think so.

It would not be impossible if the Jews were daft. I will give you that much.

Even if they did do this, for 40 years? Then they would not be lost but doing this knowingly. They would be making conscious decision to stop and settle down. There is a difference between that and wandering the desert for 40 years clearly.

The OT also insists that "rabbits cheweth the cud" and "bats are birds."

That’s another inconsistent statement. Shouldn’t the Jews have been aware of how to navigate the desert to some degree?

RE: Women, or lack there-of

There s ALWAYS going to be a higher percentage of males on these type websites. I think the average ratio is something like 30:70. Maybe free social networking sites are a little more comparable but I doubt it.

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

Yes I read it and I still could find no evidence for the existence of Moses as an actual living, breathing person. The article falls short of delivering that. Bottom line, the Egyptians NEVER once described ANY historical figure that would even remotely fit the description of Moses. I find this difficult to believe. In fact the only place where Moses is ever detailed as an actual historical figure is in the bible. Sorry. roll eyes There is absolutely no historical evidence for this greatest Jewish leader of all times. No inscriptions on whether stone, bone, bronze, clay tablets, papyri or any mentions in place names or in traditional legends in the area, other than in the Bible. Even though Moses is far younger than well documented Egyptian, Assyrian and Sumerian rulers who have left us monuments, statues, pictures/hieroglyphs and an abundance of inscriptions. confused I’m afraid you still hold the burden of proof.

RE: The Couger

Well I would say you dont have to be afraid of older women based ont their age.

RE: The Couger

loverboy690: The couger in my eyes is like a wild beast that can't be tammed. They may show affection for awhile but they will attack in the end.

RE: The Couger

What does that mean? You word things kind of awkwardly. Anyway, you already said you were scared of older women. dunno

RE: The Couger

We arent THAT far apart in age. Cougars are like 20+ your senior would guess. roll eyes

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

One more thing...It took the Israelites 40 years to travel from Egypt to Canaan, yet such a journey, even at that time, would have taken no more than ten days. laugh

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

According to Exodus the Egyptian pharaoh decided that all the newborn Hebrew sons should be tossed in the Nile. When Moses was born his mother beat pharaoh to it and placed the toddler in a basket of papyrus made tight with dirt and pitch and tossed the basket in the Nile herself. He was then found and adopted by the pharaoh’s daughter (Ex 1-10).

An identical story
On a clay tablet a thousand years older, dated ca 2300 BC, there is an identical story telling how the high priestess in the city of Azupia by the Euphrates gave birth to a son in secret since she as high priestess was supposed to live in chastity. She put her newborn son in a basket made tight with dirt and pitch, and placed it into the river (Euphrates). The child was found by Aqqi, the water bearer, and grew up to be a great king. The name of this child was Sargon (the true king) and he was one of the most important and influential Sumerian rulers and conquerors. His reign lasted for 56 years (2382-2327 BC) and the myth of his birth and childhood was read in the schools of Mesopotamia and was widely known, - obviously also for the authors of the Bible.

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

It’s helpful if you quote people instead of just writing what they said because then it appears as if you are writing it. Capish? Thanks.

Well obviously Paleontology and human anthropogenesis is not your strong point or subject of study. That was the only reason I addressed you as you were making some pretty wild and inaccurate statements. I have actually worked in the field.

I am not as much interested in whatever you were discussing with Crotalus_p and you can continue that discussion with him if you like and I will not interrupt. I believe the story of Noah's Ark depicted in the OT perhaps could have happened but on a much smaller scale. The flood was localized. When these people were writing this down, you must remember that this area of the Middle East would have appeared like the world to them so they wrote about the flood in those terms. It’s also very possible that a man named Noah existed. Maybe he was crazy or senile and he built some sort of flotation device and loaded all of his farm animals onto it.

These people had no TVs and they told stories for amusement and recreation.

I am not telling you that Moses did not exist to be "harsh." Don’t be silly. That is the historical reality. The Egyptians NEVER mentioned anyone that would have fit the description of Moses in any of their known writings. There was nothing ever documented that would lead us to think that anyone like Moses came into contact with the Pharaoh or his daughter. The character Moses is more than likely based on the much more ancient Sumerian King Sargon. The Sumerians were sacked by the Akkadians who were a Semitic people in origin and that is how many of these stories were passed down. Do with it what you will. There is also no evidence to support the existence of Jesus but whos keeping score here.

RE: DIVINE CREATOR or Darwin's Theory ?

The tentative connections between species, are open to clarification as new fossil or DNA evidence is reviewed in the scientific literature. But the overall evolutionary sequence is extensively documented and no longer open to credible dispute.
