You Can Never Be Free
Many people do not know what to do with their freedom. As such they are prisoners of their own freedom. Freedom, when you are not prepared for it, is a burden and a curse. What good is it for a caged parrot to gain his freedom only to die of starvation and exposure?
Freedom is not doing what you want to do. That is called anarchy; and when we all do what we want to do, it causes chaos. Then freedom is just another word for having nothing left to lose.
We are all prisoners of our possessions. When you possess something, you have to take certain measures to protect that possession; be that material, love, status or anything else. The more precious the possession is to you, the more you are bound to it. You can only be truly free when you have nothing to tie you down to a certain place or routine.
Some would say that freedom is doing the right thing but what is the right thing? What is right for you can never be right for everybody else. Are you really free when you are bound to certain options? Is that really free choice?
If freedom looked like that, I’d rather be comfortably enslaved for only death can bring true freedom. And that is only if there is no afterlife because even then you will not have the choice of where you want to go. You will be bound by your limited choices here on earth.

That's brutal!! good point. “freedom” is not just about the right, but to act according to one's determined motives.
most people consider free will to mean that they can make a choice differently if given the opportunity under the exact same circumstances... they cannot. while we may be free to choose, we are not free from what to choose.
If a bear is running at me, my choice is not to eat chocolate or read a book. It is to run or die. choice does not mean free will. our actions are controlled by preceding events and we are not free. even when our actions are random and we are not free at all.
not sure about possessions... thats another story.

Mind you, after thinking about it some more, freedom may be a mindset.
Are you free to travel to Russia now? not tomorrow; NOW. Without telling anybody and without HAVING to lock your door; without a visa or passport?
And now I wonder what happened to free love. Those hippies might have had a very good idea there.
I think we can make an exception for that if the throw in a beer too, but I have a notion somebody will pay for it all in the end.

We have a large colony of hippies in Knysna. One of my school mates (from a very good family) has been there about all his life.
I see him sometimes when they come to Cape Town to sell their goods.
His mother died a few years ago and being an only child he inherited quite well, but still prefer to stay where he is.
I hope you havent confined yourself to solitary confinement?
I guess having the net off for 36 or so hours the other day, you really felt trapped and imprisoned in your own home.

You are absolute correct. If we are born free why the #$%&# are we taxed to death.
Of course you are free. Just remember to wear some clothes, switch off the stove and lock the door when you leave.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have to wear warm clothes in winter. It would seem that we are prisoners of our own bodies too.
