Shark Finning
More and more sharks are caught solely for their fins while the remainder of the shark is discarded in the ocean; often while still alive. Shark finning at sea enables fishing vessels to increase profitability by increasing the number of sharks harvested, as they only have to store and transport the fins, by far the most profitable part of the shark.Removal of a shark's fins prevents it from swimming. It is therefore incapable of hunting or avoiding predators. Further, some species lack the ability to pump water through their gills and must swim without rest; these species asphyxiate if unable to move.
Shark fins are among the most expensive seafood products, commonly retailing at US$400 per kg in the U.S, where finning is prohibited. Some buyers regard the whale shark and the basking shark as trophy species, and pay $10,000 to $20,000 for a fin.
In 2012 a 100 million sharks we caught.
About 75 shark attacks are reported worldwide each year while less than 10% of them are fatal.

interesting, and true,
personally, i do not condone the the unnecessary fishing of sharks.
However, i do not accept the so called facts about shark attacks on humans.
The statistics appear low, when compared to other deaths, but when correct figures are used, such as how many people are in the water at the time of a shark attack, the ratio is much higher.
This does not mean we should hunt the sharks to extinction, just the attacks from sharks are higher than stated.
I never really understood our obsession with profit, greed in generally ,the destructive force which leads us to wrecking everything around us
Interesting enough I noticed that Oz have an higher than average shark attack frequency. In the hot tropical waters of our east coast it is also higher than our national average. Luckily here, in the cold waters of the Cape shark attacks are a rarity.
Shark Fin Soup is a very exotic delicacy in the East and have been around for centuries. It is believed - as with rhino horn - to increase male potency.
Beware the shark. never a friend; always hungry. the only sharks I know works in the city and wall street.
Happy birthday, my friend. Incidentally, it is also my sister's birthday today.
Talking about sharks in the cities; the word shark came from the German word Schurke which means a scoundrel.
Shark attacks are terrible yes but if you don't interfere in their lives and their world and kill them for the fins, surely he cannot enter your world and attack you.

Sharks are dwarfs when it comes to human killings. The hippopotamus kills about 5900 people every year; mostly in Africa . We do not have reliable statistics about crocodile killings but some authorities rate the crocodile now as the biggest man killer in South Africa. Because most these are people crossing our borders illegally at night very few are reported.
Death by shark attacks in the US in on average less than 3 per year while about 30 people are killed by dogs in the US every year.
~DAN~
And more surprising
Cows, not bulls, kill another 25 on average in the USA only while horses finish off another 20 on average.
No, just free enterprise at work.
shark fin soup is a delicacy that is banned here because of the unethical killing of sharks...sharks take a bad rap for killing people but as you pointed out, it is few in comparison to other attacks on humans...
I cannot even think that I would like shark fin soup. I don't like shark meat to start with. Though we do eat a lot of shark meat without knowing. Some fish fingers are mostly shark meat.
I put in in the same category as the story about the baby seal clubbing in the arctic regions some years ago.
Fortunately, I have rarely eaten fish fingers...but I do know somw pet food contains shark meat...I have no problem with the consumption of shark meat as long as the killing is ethical and all of the meat is used...
Yes, dogs are very loyal animals and will not easily attack their masters; even if treated badly. I can well imagine that most these deaths occurred in the course of their duties or after being provoked by a stranger.
So say I too. We are a meat eating species but we do not have to kill an entire shark just for 7 fins. At least utilize all that is useful. There is a lot of meat on a grown shark and many people go hungry.

2 days to go cat
How did yuu get to know so much about my in-laws?
Hmm, some are even dangerous to eat; luckily I don't like shark meat.
Luckily legislation now forbids the removal of fins at sea in many countries. The entire shark, complete with his fins still attached to him must be brought ashore. Being caught with shark fins coming ashore means big problems.
Sorry I missed your comment. My signal is very weak at the moment and the pages take ages to load. The pics even longer.
The only problem is these sharks will never get up again.
i am afraid of sharks baby....
Big Fines And/Or Jail!
Hope more Nations follow their lead!
But they are splendid Creatures that shouldn't be commercially fished!
It's a disgrace!
Sharks take long to grow into maturity and are slow breeders. Quite a few species are on the threatened list. I don't have a problem with the responsible harvesting of plentiful species but to kill and dump sharks just for their fins is an outrage.
Narcissistic Behaviour !! but all I see is a rather interesting blog about sharks
Yes, quite so. And incidently, snakes also kill very few people. About 7000-8000 people are bitten by snakes in the US per year but on average only 5 of them die.
