The end of another MANGO SEASON...

I have a mango tree in my back yard that is older than me.

Every year we get lots of tasty mangoes, so many that I have to give most away.
The tree was damaged when the last (big) hurricane came through around 10 years ago.
A section snapped off that I would estimate was 15% but that didn't affect the amount of mangoes we get, which is upwards of 350 every season.
This variety goes from green to yellow. If you eat one then, it has an apple-like flavor.
To get the fruit that early, we have a long aluminum pole with a looped wire on the end. One pull and the mango drops to the ground. When they change color to reddish orange the flavor completely changes and becomes sweet like honey.

This season beat all previous seasons and I'm not sure why. Perhaps we had more rain than normal, but estimates were over 500 mangoes this year!

When I get up in the morning, I go out with some grocery bags and usually fill 2 of them.
In the evening, we check again and often find enough to fill another bag.

I'm not sure why but my neighbors have mango trees but they aren't the same as mine. Different color and flavor, also their trees aren't as tall as mine.

The last of the mangoes fell a few weeks ago and it's the end of mango season at my place.

Thanks for reading my blog!

chatalllion I've often wondered what Mangoes taste like.So they have a apple like flavor?I Next time I buy some fruit sna vegetables I'll have to buy a mango too.
Mangoes are one of my favourite fruit.
Unfortunately they don't grow here easily so they have to be imported.
I did buy one this evening though wine
It is my favorite fruit too. Yum !
Can you save some of it frozen for smoothies ?
Or does it not freeze well ?
Bearwoman, there are many different varieties and each has it's own flavor.
Someone gave me 2 Asian mangoes that were yellow and had a smooth texture to the seed. The mangoes from my tree have more fibers as you cut close to the seed.
A co worker slices 2 halves as close to the seed as possible. then she puts it peel side down and cut squares ala Rubicks Cube. Easy to eat, no mess and no one cares that you've wasted 30% of the mango to have it gourmet style.
chatillion Thank you for the information.wave
Jim, no problem to freeze mangoes. Peel and slice them first.
Also, I recommend putting a few into into freezer bags.
If you bag too many it's difficult to separate.
Also try pouring milk in the bag as it helps to stop freezer burn - ice formation around the outside of the fruit.
Asian mangos are by far my favorite. I want an avacado tree.
I wonder if one could make a pie by using mangos and other cut up fruit and bake a pie. There is nothing like a fresh homemade pie coming out of the oven. The aroma is heavenly.happy place
I know what I'm going to bake soon.A homemade mango pie.

I bet it comes out delicious.
I'm guessing you would have to thicken it up the way one does with peaches because it has much more moisture than apples.
Fay Thank you.I'll have to try your homemade cheese recipe too and post some pics of it.wave
Fay I always do thicken pies up regardless of which I make.
I've never had fresh mangoes. The closest I've come was the flavored mango Lifesavers from the tropical fruit roll (Yeah, I know....Not even close!). I've always wondered what I was missing...dunno
Yum! I love mangoes, but they are imported here. I just finished some mango ice cream... mmmm mmmm
Chatillion, Here in Puerto Rico they grow wild everywhere. There are several varieties ranging from the small ( tangerine sized ) to the large ( cantaloupe sized ) ones. You also can freeze them for smoothies later in the year. Just slice them and put them in the small freezer bags and seal them up . When you want to use them just take them out of the freezer for about a half hour, then cut or break the chunk you want to use. Put the rest back in the freezer for later and dump them in the blender with whatever else you want to use in it . They are great for breakfast with milk and banana. A little touch of rum also makes a tall afternoon smoothie treat. . . waiter buddies
Love mangoes..

Hi Kal the color resembles the inside of a Cantaloupe.I'm planning on buying some mangoes soon.
In many stores you can buy them in the frozen section with the frozen berries and such.

Hi Kal that pie wasn't mine but a stock photo. But hopefully I'll be able to make a homemade pie soon.
Bear keep us posted on how your mango pie turns out. I'm having a hard time not drooling.
Fay I will.wave
Mangoes are delish.

I like the texture and the sweetness.

I usually pop it into my smoothie for breakfast...smitten
I went to the grocery store shopping and picked up a mango.I didn't want to invest in pie ingredients unless I have a taste of one first.
Go for it Bearwoman, you won't be disappointed.
Chat Thank you. I grew up on fruit and veggies.
Here's my picture on my cut up pieces of the mango I bought today.

It also resembles something like the the taste of orange. It is good.

Will it be fight or flight confused

Or will this attempt of interaction also go unnoticed

dunno
What's that? A Trojan mango, you say?

(I better quit while I'm ahead...)
On, I don't recognize that at all.
The shape and coloration would appear to be in the family of pumpkin/squash, but the ones I've seen aren't as bumpy and the stems are thicker.

What is it?

Fresh from my sister's garden. yay
We call them cheramoya
Or custard appletongue
BW - I can tell from your photo of slices, that the mango was not fully ripe yet. They are much more delicious when fully ripe, a huge difference. Next time you get one from the store, place it on a windowsill until it is soft, but not beginning to get brown. The skin should be mostly red & orange (except for the smaller yellow skin ones).
Thanks Jim for the tip cause I never had a mango before and never knew that they weren't ripe yet. Thanks to you now I know.

I learned long ago that food stores don't get their veggies and fruits early when they're overly ripe.
