Hypnotism

In 1982, I was enrolled as an evening class student in a Psychology 120 course at the University of Manitoba, Canada. The lecturer mentioned the topic of hypnotism. He said he had some experience with it. He requested our permission to participate in an exercise in hypnotism. There were over 100 students in the lecture room.

He asked us to remain in our seats and to interlock the fingers of both hands in front of our bodies and to keep them in that position. I do not recall his exact words after that but I think it was a statement that our fingers would remain interlocked. Then he asked us to “unlock”our fingers.

I can vividly recall my surprise and amazement at what transpired after that. About seven or eight students, still in their seats, and with alarm in their voices, stated they were unable to “unlock” their fingers. The lecturer requested them to come to him at the front of the class. Then he touched their interlocked fingers and they became free.
He did mention that some persons are more susceptible to hypnotism than others.

Have you or anyone that you know personally ever been hypnotized by someone else, similar to what happened to the students as described above?

I know that hypnosis is also used as a form of therapy to treat anxiety and depression.

It is used in regression, where persons are “taken back” to some past stage in their lives, and are able to describe certain past events that they experienced; this may be part of their therapy.

Some are taken as far back as “previous lives”. Several books have been written that claim to describe past lives of various persons. Some sources quote this as evidence of reincarnation.

What do you think of hypnotism?

Life and Love

Something to think about:
If you cannot cope with love then you cannot cope with life. The two are inseparable. You can't live without the love. Because to Live is to Love, and to Love is the utmost to Life.... Life needs love, and love bring life.

As the song so states, its better to have Loved and lost, than to Live and never have Loved at all.

Nervous habits.

Sitting here in a big box eatery, using the free WiFi, as is my tightwad curmudgeon wont. Guy next to me is eating a huge toxic breakfast of about a million over sugared (with high GM fructose) pancakes. Hardly the more diet friendly EU style variety (ca veut dire des Creppes, mes amis). Anyway, this poor chap spends several minutes turning the morbid mess over, numerous times, using the plastic forks, not one, but get this, four, alternating between utensils, right and left hands, ostensibly to distribute the fake maple sirple. ( I tried "em once and asked for honey with only limited success, oh ye healthy bloggerteers.) The hand movements closely resembled the so called "square meal" those of you familiar with some military academies will know. All the better to ward off the anxious fears, and restore temporary equanimity. Far easier with the right agent, when it works. Nuff said.We can all sympathize with the poor slob's dilemma? God bless him. Aa.

Why you should not dare a MMA fighter

Fighting in the streets is dumb, but you have to be a special sort of stupid to try and take on the much larger man who also happens to be a bouncer at the bar you just got kicked out of. But that’s exactly what this random tough guy tried to do, and unfortunately for him, the odds were stacked even further outside his favor. It turns out the bouncer, one John Hernholm, is also an MMA fighter with a 5-0 amateur and 1-0 pro record.

But poor drunkbro doesn’t know this, so off his shirt comes and he stalks in thinking he’s going to somehow destroy the 320-pound Hernholm, who leans forward and sticks his chin out enticingly. As soon as the shirtless guy throws a wild hook, Hernholm leans back and the punch sails harmlessly in front of his face. He then proceeds to knock the dude’s head off with a short uppercut to the jaw.

How unclued are regular medical docs (DO's and MD's)?

Sure, they have their place. And they do learn a lot in school and thereafter. Same with NP's. And if they really care, aren't shameless money grubbers, and take time to actually LISTEN to patients, families and their nurses, they have a role in health care. But there is so much about health that they typically overlook, although the younger grads are improving. Diet, lifestyle, socialization, spirituality, and so much more are really where health lies. In many cases, the side effects of many treatments, forget the costs, are worst than the illness itself. And when some non MD's and DO's , like chiropractors, claim that the former only deal with symptoms, they are really speaking as the marginally educated. Thousands of counter examples. But what are your thoughts here? Once an old surgeon during my visit to her, had little good to say about acupuncture, just by way of one example. But she was surprised when I returned after TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine-acupuncture) with my issues gone, while her medicines helped, but only some. Over a century ago, the famous doctor, Sir William Osler, advised his students to simply LISTEN with kind interest to every patient. After a while the correcct diagnosis always comes out of the patient's own mouth. Aa.

Smoking kills

My friend with lung cancer begged her doctor and family today to remove the machine that's keeping her alive.

Having witnessed her painful struggle for the last two years, I'd say yes. But her family being Catholic, are confused and today is the day they'd decide. I hope for their unity and would agree.

I'm older than her but she'd been hooked on cigarette for the last 30 years, tried to quit many a times but failed.

I consoled her, by saying we will all die, but even with that I feel her regrets for not quitting when she would have considering her dad died at 50 for the same illness.

The good news is that her two daughters successfully quit smoking two years ago after their mother's diagnosis.

A good lesson learned for them.

I know nicotine addiction is one hard habit to give up. I was married to one for 28 years.

My prayers for my friend. sad flower
