The Medicalisation of Normality

"Mislabeling everyday problems as mental illness has shocking implications for individuals and society: stigmatising a healthy person as mentally ill leads to unnecessary, harmful medications, the narrowing of horizons, misallocation of medical resources, and draining of the budgets of families and the nation. We also shift responsibility for our mental well-being away from our own naturally resilient and self-healing brains, which have kept us sane for hundreds of thousands of years, and into the hands of 'Big Pharma', who are reaping multi-billion-dollar profits."

"Over the last 40 years The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – the bible of the psychiatric professions – has spawned more and more diagnostic categories, "inventing" disorders along the way and radically reducing the range of what can be construed as normal or sane. Meanwhile Big Pharma, feeding its appetite for profits and ours for drugs, has gained an ever greater hold over our mental and emotional lives, medicalising normality.

The more studies that come along to tell us about the rise in mental illness, the more we fit our problems and unhappiness into a category of mental disorder, developing symptoms to take to the doctor in search of a cure. Humans are suggestible creatures. And doctors like to help: they provide the pills Big Pharma recommends, though many must now know that research has shown placebos can work just as well and with fewer side effects."

"ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, was conceived at a meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in 1987. It was brought into being by a show of hands, and duly included in a textbook, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Psychiatrists consider it a real disorder, but for those who use scientific evidence to support claims of an illness, it’s fictional. To this day, there have been no scientific tests to support the existence of ADHD.

Then, there are the diagnostic criteria. Whichever way you try and bend them, the criteria are still reflective of normal childhood behaviour. They include “often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities”; “often has difficulties organising tasks and activities”; “often avoids, dislikes or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort”; “often loses things necessary for tasks or activities”; “is often forgetful in daily activities”; “is often on the go”; “often talks excessively” and “often interrupts or intrudes on others”. It’s a reclassification of normal behaviour with a scientific-sounding, made-up label.

Then, there are the drugs that produce nullifying effects and which are hailed as ‘demonstrably effective’. All that has happened is the person has been drugged, and is exhibiting the effects of a dangerous, mind-altering foreign substance in his or her body. Psychiatric drugs have an effect on a person: they will keep him/her quiet and compliant, but drugs don’t cure anything.

The fundamental contradiction lies in the fact that psychiatrists manufacture the labels, they diagnose the ‘disorders,’ and they prescribe the drugs.

If psychiatry was against the medicalisation of normality, then ‘disorders’ like ADHD would be scrapped, the drugging of children would decrease, and the real cause of problems would be found and treated, using less invasive treatments. It’s time for change."

Aspirin Is Good For Your Skin..2

The Recipe
The ingredients are simple, easily available and cost next to nothing. You will need: 5 aspirin tablets (not the effervescent kind), about a tablespoon of natural organic honey and natural white yogurt.
Step 1
First, put the aspirin tablets inside a small plastic bag or sandwich bag. Using the bottom of a glass, crush the tablets inside the bag until they form a white powder. The bag will prevent the powder from spreading everywhere!
Step 2
Next, take the honey and yogurt and mix them together. When they’re fully mixed, add in the powder from the aspirin Before putting on the mask, remember to wash your face and remove any makeup or makeup residue. In order to prep your skin and get it ready for application, put a warm washcloth on your face. The heat will dilate your pores so the mask will penetrate the skin for a maximized effect! When applying to your face, take care to avoid the eye area.
Step 3
The aspirin mask should be left to rest for at least 20-30 minutes. When the time is up, rinse thoroughly with warm water to completely remove the mask. You’re done!
Warnings
There are some things to remember when using an aspirin mask. The preparation contains a chemical element, therefore should not be used more than two or three times a month. We also recommend that you do it in the evening. In addition to regenerating you skin, treat yourself to a moment of relaxation and tranquility before bedtime. In the days after the treatment, it’s recommended to protect your face from the sun with sunscreen. Finally, it seems obvious to say, but those suffering from an allergy to this chemical should absolutely NOT do this treatment.
It’s Not Just For Your Face! This particular beauty treatment DIY has special benefits: it not only works by invigorating the skin, but helps to heal imperfections, such as scars and blemishes. In addition, the application can also be done on other parts of the body: elbows, armpits and knees are the most likely targets. Aspirin is not just good for your headaches, but for your beauty, too!

Smoking cigarettes.

In this day and age, even by a few health professionals, behaviors drenched in denial, even with well known harmful effects around their own kids, led around by their noses by big tabacco business adverts, and lots more. Interested in comments.

Why Obesity is rampant in the US

I don't normally eat in a buffet restaurant but the new Japanese/Chinese opened up a few blocks from my home sounded very enticing.

I checked the menu and it seemed very healthy and interesting mix of food selection.

Voila, I have never seen so many people that are so overweight and eating like there is no tomorrow. I was thinking to myself, of course, this is one of the reasons why there is such a big problem in our country on obesity. We are of no self control to stop eating even when we are full because it is there. Then I thought of the skinny people in Europe. At least in France, although even in Switzerland, there is not too many overweight that I have seen whenever I visit there. Not as much as in my country anyways.

Every time I go there and visit Europe, when we were not eating out, my friend and I go to the supermarket, and look at the selections of foods and they are packed very small and very lean. Compared to my country, gosh it is mostly in large quantities. Okay, so we don't have to spend too many trips shopping for food. (I have always bought mostly my groceries to Costco and or Vons in California, while in the Mid West, Byerlys is a good place).

The point of this blog is to make sure that even if we go and eat in a buffet, we must not forget that overeating causes extra food stored in the fat cells. The problem is if we won't burn it, you know what happens.

Note:1. I have read about last year published on Time Magazine that our Health programs is enough to bankrupt our economy in the next 20 years if we don't improve our individual health and control our eating habits.

Only eat what our bodies can burn. I know it is easier said than done but we can do it. My children unfortunately are not as slim and skinny as me, but they are trying hard. Then they blame me for marrying an Irish man with big bones and heavy frame. lol.

Anyways, thanks for reading and sharing your opinions.

This is not about making fun and or insulting the big and heavy people. This is about improving our lives and be healthy.

Note: 2. Billions of dollars are spent on wasting foods, and then billions of dollars are spent on losing weight. Go figure.bouquet

Hospice Volunteer Spiritual Nourishment

angel2 angel This has been a long and winding road, sadness and pain but most of all gratefulness that a beloved has been spared for yet another day. My voluntary caregiving is not over yet as I have taken a few hours to come up take air and rejuvenate.Hospice volunteer work is not about death. It is about life. It is about the moment, the hour, the time you spend serving. When I signed up to train as a volunteer, I did not know if I could do it. Our society does not spend much time, money, energy, or thought on our last days, thus my knowledge of the process was minimal. Having trained and experienced firsthand the process, feelings, and journeys of others’ ultimate passage has made me a much more thoughtful and wise person. What is really important has surfaced. My life has more value. As my life and schedule have changed during my volunteering, people ask me if I plan to continue to volunteer, or if I have time to volunteer still. My answer is that I cannot imagine not volunteering. It is a part of me. It is an intricate part of my life--my spiritual nourishment. It is a great gift to me. My greatest hesitance or fear is that I am getting more out of it than I am giving.Hospice has clearly put so much into their organization, and that makes me feel as I do about volunteering. The training is thorough, and the staff is superb. The best part of my day is when I meet someone and share that I am a volunteer at Hospice. There is usually a pause, a clarity in their eyes, as if refocusing, and then the conversation continues almost on a different level. They automatically know something about your heart and about who you are. They know you are real.
I was not able to wish anybody for the festive season as I would have`loved to but the blog I posted became nasty and I did not want this to effect me in anyway as to rub off on the patients I was going to give my love and attention to.I now wish each and every living being,be it human ,animal, friend, acquaintance or those that dont like me grin “Follow your passions, believe in karma, and you won’t have to chase your dreams;they will come to you.teddybear bouquet lips

Depression Drug Medical Fraud

Vast Majority Prescribed Dangerous Mind-altering Drugs Don’t Even Have Depression.

A recent study indicates that more than two-thirds of people who have been prescribed antidepressants are likely not suffering from depression at all. Sixty-nine percent of those taking SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) do not display the classic symptoms of major depressive disorder, which is commonly known as clinical depression, according to a report published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

SSRIs are also prescribed for other mental disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, and panic disorder, but the researchers found that 38 percent of those taking the drugs did not meet the criteria for these conditions either.

Commonly considered to have fewer side effects than other antidepressants, SSRIs are the most prescribed class of drugs for treating depression and other psychiatric disorders.

The authors of the study wrote:

Many individuals who are prescribed and use antidepressant medications may not have met criteria for mental disorders. Our data indicate that antidepressants are commonly used in the absence of clear evidence-based indications.

Between 1988 and 2008, the use of antidepressants increased almost 400 percent, with 11 percent of Americans now taking these drugs regularly.

Why are these drugs being over-prescribed?

The answer might be that temporary periods of mental stress are being misdiagnosed as clinical depression. Dr. Howard Forman, medical director of the Addiction Consultation Service at Montefiore Medical Center, is one of those who subscribe to this theory.

According to Dr. Forman:

We all experience periods of stress, periods of sadness, and periods of self-doubt. These don’t make us mentally ill, they define us as human.

He also points out that although psychotherapy might be a better way of treating these conditions, there are “roadblocks” involved, including cost, scarcity of qualified therapists, and the time demands those experts face.

The official U.S. guidelines for diagnosing clinical depression are when a “person has five or more depressive symptoms over a two week period, most of the day, nearly every day.”

Symptoms of clinical depression range from a depressed mood to thoughts of suicide. They might also include a lack of interest in normal activities, changes in weight or appetite, insomnia or too much sleep, restlessness, fatigue, guilty feelings and problems with concentration or decision-making.

Although SSRIs are considered to be safer than other antidepressants, they are not without potentially serious side effects. Studies have shown that the use of antidepressants involves an “increased risk of suicidal behaviour and thoughts in children and adolescents, particularly in the early stages of treatment.” The use of Prozac and Seroxat actually doubles the risk of suicidal behavior among young people.

Studies have also indicated an increased risk of children being born with autism when their mothers take SSRIs during pregnancy.

Considering the risks, these drugs should never be casually prescribed. However, in this climate of increased reliance on pills to solve every problem, over-prescription of medications is rampant, particularly in the U.S.

Big Pharma rakes in more than half a trillion dollars in revenues each year and spends billions advertising its products. This is most likely the real reason that antidepressants are being over-prescribed.

Drug manufacturers apply pressure and provide incentives to doctors to prescribe more pharmaceuticals than necessary. One study revealed that “drug companies have a tremendous incentive to find new conditions to treat with existing drugs, and when they can’t, they invent them.”
