Health, yes, but how about mental health?

The opportunity for expression of thoughts on CS is a blessing, and the cyber scrutinizers at CS have been quite broad in thinking what is acceptable. We see all sorts of political, social, cultural, personal and other musings, and responses can be enlightening, supportive, critical, informative, corrective, and much more. Of course, these free sites are not always a love fest of sound mental health. It doesn't take specialized training to appreciate this, but I suspect some with such experience will see health, thankfully, in most places, but sadly, the serious absence of such, in others. We don't need to get personal here, but to just mention experiences, if relevant. Humor and kindness never hurt, as well.

Lent and other challenges

Anyone give up anything for Lent? I used to as a kid, haven't done for years. Last time I did, I gave up eating spinach for 40 days. It was tough.

Now I've been challenged to give up beer for a week. A week? Hell I could give it up for a month. A year. No need to prove anything. My cynical friend said bet you couldn't. Oh aye, I said, I'll do it, if you give up CS for a week.

From tomorrow, no beer for a week. Easy.beer Cheers. cheers Here's to a week of interesting blogs, new people and challenging comments. devil rolling on the floor laughing

Phobias or simple fears?

Like most kids, I climbed trees, but unlike most normal folks, the habit stuck, principally for setting antennas up for a dying hobby. Thanks Internet. Never caused problems. In my early 30's, I think first looking over the edge of out Grand Canyon prior to a week of desert backpacking, I noticed that queasy feeling for the first time. Slight dizziness, mild nausea, and anxiety. Got worse over the years, and now if I climb a big tree, as is part of all our simian heritage, I can only do so if I don't look down at my kids and dog below, all hoping for that big insurance settlement. So wise and valued CS bloggers, any similar experiences, perhaps with spiders, insects, elevators or snakes? How do you distinguish between a simple natural fear, and a crushing phobia? Anyone recover from such, either naturally or with help. Are there natural fears? Babies, most of them, will reach innocently for snakes and tarantulas. Some ladies seem to avoid zippers on men's pants: could it be due to that big snake hiding inside? D.

Egyptian Flu

This is a sexua11y transmittable disease where the host is always a woman. The virus has a gestation period of about 280 days. The host may be infected several times during her lifetime until later in her life when she will permanently become immune against this virus.professor

At the end of the incubation period, the host turns into a mummy (if she is not already in that condition); hence the term ‘Egyptian Flu. Though the virus had run its course and every thing may seem to be back to normal, nothing is ever the same afterwards. The consequences are far reaching.wink

This infection is normally first observed when the woman ‘skips’. Huh? And I always thought that skipping was something done with a rope to get fit.confused

The most typical symptoms include, among other, being nauseous, the swelling of the abdomen, the enlargement of the breasts, and an uncontrollable craving for certain foodstuffs at the most ridiculous times, sometimes for something that she does not normally like to eat.doh

The source of the virus is always a male. In certain cases the excessive presence of a toxin named testosterone, drives the male into a frenzy trying to infect as many hosts as possible. The male should not be chastised for this. It is beyond his control.grin

The best way to prevent being infected is for the female to keep a pea between her knees. As long as she keeps it there, she will not be affected.idea

There are several other ways to prevent infection but that is beyond the scope of this blog. You should Google ‘family planning’ for more information as this infection can have a negative impact on your personal finances and, if left unchecked, it may run havoc with the global population statistics.scold

Waiting to hear from the dog-sitter

Trouble with taking in a rescue dog, especially a neurotic older rescue dog, is that she hates kennels. She thinks she's been dumped again, she goes into a decline, she loses weight and fur, and for 3 days after I come home she leaps to her feet every time I move, won't let me out of her sight, and does the whole Camille bit when I go to work - paw to her forehead, sagging limply against the wall -

Drama queen of note. Don't know where she gets it from. I blame the French bulldog side of her breeding. The other half is English bulldog, which means she looks French but twice the size - weighs 40 lbs and has a chest like an all-in wrestler.

So no more kennels. I have a dog-sitter who comes to the house instead. Well, I have a few in my little black book. People don't queue up to take care of a sweet little dog with unexpected steel jaws who has been known to bite first and ask questions afterwards when they enter the house. I've sent texts to them all and am waiting patiently for replies. So far one has a wedding (not her own, but she still doesn't want to cancel, I asked) one would have LOVED to but is painting her nails all next weekend, and one said no, that I had a cheek asking, and talking of cheek, the spot still hurts in cold weather and had I noticed how cold it has been lately?

Still waiting to hear from my dog's personal favourite, a strapping young lass with a crewcut, booming voice and tattoos. My dog adores her, and is adored in turn. Well, who wouldn't love that face?

FEAR, FEAR, FEAR!

I have written poetry and Blogs over many years now. I had to leave my friends behind and felt like I would not live let alone ever write again. I was diagnosed with cancer and over the period of two years had five surgeries. I am much Blessed to be alive, cancer free and back with everyone and everything I have so missed. I have been so happy until more bad news.

In May I will be going in for another surgery. Not cancer this time. Thank God. But serious. I've been praying and anything I can to rid me of this fear I have. I find myself fearful of anything and everything anymore. I feel the root is the surgery. But I can't sleep or get through a day living with constant fears. I wake and sleep in fear.

PLEASE, if any of you can offer suggestions on how you deal with fear it would be most helpful. I have tried all I know. THANK YOU! angel teddybear

Sneazles

Sudden rush of colds and flu and even - gasp - manflu around at the moment. So how do you cheer yourself up when your head feels like someone has poured concrete through your ears, your nose has been blown so often it is sore to the touch, everything tastes like mud, and you ache from head to foot? I've been sneezed on from all directions at work today. I've seen the future, and it isn't pretty. help

EDITED COMMENT. I'M NOT SICK - YET. THE WHOLE WORLD AROUND ME IS SICK AND BREATHING GERMS OVER ME. I WANT TO BE READY FOR IT. And now I will stop shouting. grin

So. How do you handle this thing if it happens?

Take to your bed and call croakingly for a cup of tea before you remember, damnit, you're single. (Lucky you with those who will bring a cup of tea!)

Hot bath, hot toddy, and a pile of blankets?

A bottle of brandy? Hic

Chocolate?

I'm of the chocolate persuasion myself but I just wondered if anyone had good ideas.

Oh, and I'm told if you blow your nose every time you sneeze you will never have a cold. If you leave a peeled onion next to the bed, your cold will be gone by morning. Or smear Vicks on your feet and put on heavy wool socks to kill a cough stone dead.

So if you don't have a way to feel better, maybe you have a guaranteed cure ...

I have heard you can get high from smoking banana peels, I dont know if its true or not. Probably people here have tried it, so is it any good? Are there any risks associated with it and is it safe for pregnant teenagers?
