RE: How do you...??

Sunday was once a day of total rest. No driving around, no going from place to place, no hobbies, just eating, relaxing, watching TV or some video, eat some more, maybe a short stroll, and back to bed.
That was in sharp contrast to the weekly programme, which would see me driving around quite a bit, stealing a sandwich for a mid day lunch without a proper break, and work till late, including work sitting behind the computer to send out quotations and enquiries to various firms.

Now that has all changed. During the week, I am working less. But the biggest difference in my lifestyle including Sunday programme, was brought about by my companion, who works all day almost 8 till 8, and who looks forward to enjoying our Sundays outdoors.
Typically we wake up late on a Sunday morning 11 ish or 12 ish, shower, dress up for a Sunday drive, Sunday lunch at some restaurant worth its salt, tasting innumerable dishes offered at the buffet, (up to 26 different plates) then back to the second drive, stop by the sea, in car or in some seaside resort, have a few cokes or coke and coffee, stay there till it gets dark, go to her place this time, watch a DVD or some TV, and prepare to go to bed by 11pm for the Monday hassle!

RE: what do animals understand?

What a beautiful Ode to what must have been a very beautiful and special cat! Thanks for sharing it with us Smoky

RE: what do animals understand?

I've never had dogs, so I will leave those of you who have had dogs to comment about them, but I have had a good number of cats. Not only do I think that cats are very clever, and that they understand everything around them, they are easy animals to comunicate with. They establish eye contact, and they have some of the most beautiful eyes in the world!
Many years ago, I had a cat, and she must have been the cleverest cat I have ever had. We used to keep her inside with us for most of the day, but she used to sleep in the garden shed. As soon as my wife told me it was time to put the cat out, she would disappear. It was very easy to forget her indoors, because being out of sight, she was easy to forget and leave indoors. She also had extreme discipline with her kittens. At her call, all her kittens had to walk in single file from the eating trays to the sleeping bay. When they refused, she used to pick up a piece of paper in her mouth, giving them the impression that it was food, and using a special cry, used to make them follow her, wherever she went (single file of course)
This cat (male) I have now, will not go out into the garden shed unless I looked into his eyes, told him to take care, and to be careful, and hug and kiss him. Then he would go out without trouble.
My little white cat is the perfect example of obedience if I tell her that she is the most beautiful girl in the world. If I as much as raise my voice, she will start to tease me, and do everything the opposite of what I tell her.
I don't know about others, but I comunicate better with animals than with human beings, and am very proud of it.

RE: What are you doing right now..?

Reading your mail, darling, and wondering why you want to know what I am doing.

RE: why do so many people of different nationalities, end up living in malta?

I am sorry to have to disagree with you MARTI.
Not all Maltese women are as nice and outgoing as you. Many if not most are snobs with their nose up in the air, only to swoon at the sight of some Italian guy or some other foreigner. It has always been like this, and will always remain like this, with the only difference being that now our women are realising that they are in fierce competition even among themselves, not only with the foreigners.

RE: why do so many people of different nationalities, end up living in malta?

Don't know exactly why so many people from all nations finish living in Malta. I have always lived here, and think that because of the small size of the island, I feel hemmed in. I have always wanted to go and live in a bigger country, to find more room for my spirit.
But I can understand that different people have different reasons for wanting to live here.
For those who like Lagoona has said, it is the women, beware that our women can be very friendly with the foreigners, but can be very snobby with their kin.
Maybe the most plausible reason for living in Malta that I have heard is that being so small, one could move from one extremity to the other in less than half an hour.
For the British, it is the sunshine, and a home away from home, for the Italians it is definitely our women, for the French it is our quisine, for the Germans, it is our culture, for the Russians it is the strategic importance, for the Swedes it is a place where to thaw!!

RE: Should there be a one Universal language ?

No, Flower, IMHO, which is not so H after all, I think that when a person talks like me and you, fluently in three languages, they become "language non specific", and tend to borrow words that suit their ways of expression, from the other languages. Each language has its idiomatic expressions, but those of us who study more than one language often do away with these idiomatic expressions, because they don't come to mind as easily as our word substitution in our colloquil expressions.
I believe that every language has more than one way of expressing the equivalent of another language's idiomatic expressions.

There are some expressions that the world has adopted as international expressions like Raison d' etre, or Laissez faire, (excuse my French spelling, it is not one of the languages I talk fluently). These will always be used to make special emphasis when talking in any language.

RE: Should there be a one Universal language ?

Well said Sir Wedward.
Empty barrels make the most sound. And who needs emptier barrels after hearing such heresies from a guy who describes the English language as poor in its grammar??

RE: Should there be a one Universal language ?

BALLS BALLS BALLS !!!
What has expression got to do with thinking.....Philosophy is a way of conceiving reality.
Why don't you tell Shakespeare that the English language is too poor in its grammar. BALLS!!

RE: Should there be a one Universal language ?

No Conrad. The Nokia slogan is "connecting people". But it becomes useless if after connecting these people, they cannot speak to each other because of the language barrier. My motto "one people (the whole world population) one language!!

RE: Should there be a one Universal language ?

More than six billion people on this world speak thousands of the languages. So, there is always a communication problem between persons of 2 different locations and also results in miscomunication.

Should we have one universal language which is spoken throughout the world ? If yes, then what should it be and probably why as well.

I think English is more or less universal, although French is in a way the official (diplomatic) but I don't think we should. First, it would-in the long term at least-turn local languages obsolete, which is something bad and useless. Each language carries its own richness, idioms and elements that come from local tradition and express the lives and actions of the people who speak it. Moreover, nations that don't have their autonomy or territorial integrity use language as a definition of their individual character. Why should they be deprieved of it?

Second, it's practically a very difficult thing to do. What sort of infrastructure should China for example establish to teach all the chinese English? And to what end? It would be even worse in African countries where people are affamated to create the conditions for them to learn English (....while at the same time we can't provide them bread and milk )

Could'nt disagree with you more on this one.
A language is a tool for comunicating.
It is not an advantage that the world has thousands of languages and dialects. It is a big disadvantage. Only people with the same language can comunicate together to the detriment of the rest.

I would love to see one universal language. At one time Esperanto was meant to be that language. Ideally the universal language should be totally new, but since English is often taken to be the universal language, I would be happy to adopt it as the world's language.

For what purpose conserve idiomatic expressions and all the individual language expressions, when they don't help comunicating?
What is the use of so many languages in a world with no boundaries?

RE: Tiger of the night

Did He who made the lamb make thee??

Did He?

Can a painter destroy one of his paintings to make another?
Can a creator create something of beauty, like the lamb, to see it destroyed and mercilessly butchered by another of HIS creatures, the tiger?

Think about it.

RE: WHERE AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO EAT?

Definitely sitting at a table. Possibly with a well placed tablecloth, nicely spaced serving dishes, and why not, a candle in the middle of the table, possibly lit for added relaxation.
But I hardly ever get that!!
I like to chat a bit over a meal if in good company, but not too much, otherwise it will distract me from concentrating on my food. Since I eat very slowly, too much talking would mean the others finish well ahead of me.
As for the wine, I am not really into drinking wine. A bit here and there just to taste! I live by Coca Cola though!! Can't really say I have eaten or lived without drinking it every day!!

RE: WHEN DO YOU EAT THE MOST ....?

I eat most when I am happy, usually after cooking something quite tasty myself. I ask my girlfriend to eat with me. Usually she also thinks that my food is great. So we decide not to leave any behind and eat the whole dish, no matter what size it is!!!!

Result: I always remain thin and keep my weight. She changes her dimensions in accordance to the goodness rating of my food !!!! LOLrolling on the floor laughing

RE: What or who has upset you the most in your life?

Everyone has a waist MARTI except time. Time has no waist, so it can be wasted, but not waisted. Checked your waist recently?

RE: What or who has upset you the most in your life?

It is very difficult for me to answer you in a few words, but I'll try Smoky.
Bad luck does not last a lifetime. Cleverness defeats ignorance and by entering a few clever deals, one could make up for a life of deprivation.
Although it must have sounded like I live on bread and water, it is not the case.
My story is that my family, one of the three richest in the island, in the past, has gone unfortunately to a mediocre level of wealth. What I am trying to do is to build that wealth back, not for myself, but for my children, maybe one day we will be in a much better position, just to reflect some little fragment of our illustrious and glorious past.
I am also trying to resurrect our title to nobility which was lost over the last century.
Maybe you will understand a little bit more the context of my claim.

RE: What or who has upset you the most in your life?

The old fart would'nt have wanted it for himself. He has been accustomed to living without everything all his life. Being clever is all a part of administering wealth. Do like me, leave it in a trust, where kids can enjoy it but not dispose of it or waste it......over my dead body they would!!!!!!

RE: Modern Love

Are you from Virgin Airlines??

RE: Modern Love

I will accept anything from a woman except infidelity.

It is the breaking of the bond of trust that you are talking about, and when that happens love cannot live any longer.
You are not old fashioned. Like me, you just cannot accept bad for good.

RE: Modern Love

Monogamous??? Where are they? They are rarer than virgins!!!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
