On the one hand, it's impossible not to view America's efforts on the Northern Ireland issue as anything less than well intentioned Dub...it was a human rights atrocity.
And hell, there's a fair few Irish immigrants in the US!
For a long time, the main objection to outside interference was from the UK administrations. I'm fairly sure the Irish government was grateful for the intervention of the US.
The UK governments even dismissed the notion that a United Nations peace keeping force should take over from the UK military in order to cool things down.
Lots more involved, but that's just a breif over view.
Shadow...firstly, your over sensitivity is all to evident old chap. Americans aren't being scrutinized as far as I'm concerened...it's American ideals and their applications.
BIG difference!
Also, the documentary I was watching, as I've stated before, was on American architectural treasures and their representations of American ideals.
Simple.
And I consider myself to have a reasonably fair and inquisitive mind. I watch the news...I form certain opinions.
So if an american news corporation franchises it's news coverage to the UK, would you expect me to switch off?
No sir. I know the capital of America...and some of the states that make up your contry...and some of the politicians...and some of your sports teams.
Hell, I just love learning!
And so do many others.
And being a denizen of The Land Of The Free, surely you'll grant us our opinions and views?
And if you're refering to me Indy, my documentary was on American Historical Treasures as represented by the architecture of your nation, and focussing on what said treaures symbolise.
'Twas just a thought to open this thread. I'd hoped for a reasonable, non accusatory tone to it all...even in the face of scandals etc.
And I DID distinguish between Americans as a society, and the administrations that represent them.
Is this what's happening more and more? Is this the message that the American political machine is sub conciously proclaiming to the world?
I'm in no way attacking Americans by posting this thread. I've just watched a very interesting documentary which kinda reached the conclussion that, for all it's values of equality, liberty and freedom, America could be seen to be operating under some sort of pseudo imperialistic agenda.
So, it got me thinking...and I thought I'd open it up for debate...RESPECTFUL debate!
Now, as for the solution, well, as far as solutions go, creating a secure Palestinian state sounds like a good start.
BUT!!!
I believe Israels objection to this is the fact that Islamic fundamenalists would use it's sovriegnty for the purpose of launching terrorist attacks upon Israel.
This is why Israel won't budge, and see's fit to maintain a foothold.
At the end of the day Mark, it's not about politics and states and borders, it's about people and hearts and attitudes and education...and ignorance.
Nowt will succeed until those more salient issues have been addressed.
Reading through the threads, it got me to thinking an awful lot of folk seem to let fear shape their expectations in life, and especially in relationships.
Cynicism.
I've kinda recognized this in myself too.
But hey, it's impossible NOT to allow fear to have a significant influence on living our lives...right?
Isn't fear the root of insecurties...and we all got them haven't we?
Accept The American Way, Or Face The Consequences!
Great post Al.
