A swat gets their attention. It needs to be mild, not a beating. With a toddler, take their hand and snap your fingers in their palm. Glare at them and tell them NO, I mean it.
With an older child, a swat on the butt. Never use any instrument. Never slap in the face. My mom turned her head at the wrong time and ended up with a bloody nose from her mother.
Mom used to swat. Til I got too big and ran away til we both ended up laughing. Dad I don't remember ever hitting me. But, he could terrify with a look. First time I bugged him, got the "look" over the glasses if he was reading. Second was the bellow. Third was the fist on the table. Never found out what 4th was cause I was gooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnneeee.

I am taking a knee for homeless vets. And those old people in crummy nursing home that get neglected. Or maybe those people who fought along side us in foreign wars and then got "left behind".
Maybe I will take a knee for migrant workers slaving in the hot sun picking the vegetables that fill our stores.
Or the poor Asians who sew those cheap clothes in sweat shops.
I will NOT take a knee for criminals, hoodlums, gangstas, wastrels or poor me's.

I could just see him..but, but, lost connection, who, how..I know they make calls by robos so no way he knew my number to call me back.

Like the Iraq war, Nam was based on falsehoods. Primary was the fear that the North Vietnamese would bring in the Chinese communism. Second was the ship attack in Tonkin Bay which never happened. Once the war started it was feared that if the Viet Kong won, China would move right in. What the fools in DC who saw a commie behind every bush didn't get; was the Kong were just using the Chinese to provide soldiers and weapons. They basically hated the Chinese which was proven by them pushing the Chinese out once the war was won.
The whole Nam war stunk. Generals and politicians pushing toys and pins around on maps. Hills taken and then abandoned and then taken again. But, war makes millionaires.
And Nam was different because of the age of the soldiers. They were older and questioned things more. The draft put men in a war they saw no use for.
As far as men offing their superiors, that has happened in every war. But, I don't think any tore the country apart like Nam did to the US.
It took decades before our men could bring themselves to talk about the war.
My ex was based at Fort Carson. He took me once to the old barracks section. He said that was where returnees were. And the word around base was don't mess with them nor question them.
I asked a NCO once, knowing now what we know about the tunnels...could we have destroyed them and won. He said yes. The US had the weaponry to take them out.
The joke was soldiers pursuing the enemy had to stop at the countries borders. Now we know that Nixon and others said screw that, go bomb and fight in Cambodia and Laos and just don't tell anyone.
How do you win a war played by politicians.

Weird part of politics. At an age when most of us are slowing down, looking at the odds against us living much more, politicians are running for office or reelection.
Anthropologically, humans rarely made it to 50. Even today the average age is 70. Yet we have DC filled with people who could croak any day.
Trump is at an age and so is Biden that they could fall over tomorrow. Congress is the biggest nursing home in the country. Sane people plan that they are on limited time and retire if they can. They may keep busy, but at stuff that if undone, oh well.
Do politicians think they are immortal or what. Of course I know there was that Senator that stayed in office til a million years old. At least, we THINK he was still alive.
We even saw a Pope who realized at his age it was too much to continue and stepped aside. But, the egos of politicians never quits.

Are kids today TOTALLY idiots? Read that kids are holding parties where they invite someone with covid to attend. Then the first attendee who announces they have caught it with a doctors script, gets the money pot. The authorities are Breaking the parties up and asking they stop. What if you take it home to parents, grandparents. If one dies, could the host be charged with murder?
I have a good idea. Let them have the party. In a locked place and they stay there til they ALL get it. Sick, need hospital? Too flocking BAD. Die morons!
I swear we have a generation of kids or two that have the IQs of lemmings.

What gets me is how much work primitive cultures went to building and moving things that outweighed a thousand men. Why? To speak to the gods? To last long after they did? And yet future men or nature destroy it anyway.

I was never going to marry. Ended up doing it. 9 years in he wanted out so he could go play and have no responsibilities. We married out of high school. I grew up, he didn't. I kept saying I am doomed. He said no you aren't. We went through a year of UN engagement. Stayed friends and divided up stuff sanely.
He was right. I remarried to an even better man. 31 years til he died. Now I am bonded to a guy better again.
The hurts are buried by the good things.
The issue is if you have a bad relationship, figure out what is the issue and don't pick the same type.
I say no divorce is he or she did or didn't. Marriage is a two cylinder engine. One piston goes up, the other goes down. Both work together. If one is flawed, it is doomed to blow up.
The saying is it takes two to tangle. One feeds the other.
No one never does and no one always does. My divorce was both of us not being a smooth running engine anymore. He did, I did, he did because I did and I did because he did. It's called reciprocation.
We all have flaws and quirks and habits. Don't think it wont matter later on. Accept or move on.

I say Bully! I think it would be hilarious if all those well off, hard working Hong Kongese bail and move. China wants the colony? Good have it. Void of money, void of business and tariffed to kingdom come.
They can then re-populate it with poor Chinese and enjoy the rice fields.
China depends on HK for access to the markets of the free world. They need to figure it out.

Just how important is hitting the bar anyway?

My state is spiking covid cases. Especially a couple counties. One is where the state capital is and is also a major university city. There have been huge protests.
The city was allowing more opening to businesses. Of course, open a bar and the herd mentality kicks in. Of the new cases, only 12 positive said they were at the protests. 75% said they went to the bars.
So the mayor said that is it...bars are now closed unless they do carryout or have outside seating and can social distance. Restaurants are back to 25% capacity.
Now the Tavern League of Wisconsin is suing and screaming the bars are being picked on..maybe it was due to protests. (see above).
Economics is more important than lives to the League that depends on dues from bars. Some bars and restaurants have remained closed due to the owners feeling too much risk.
My guy said he can't see why everyone wants to sit in the bars, altho we did some when young. I said the difference is we went with a couple people or alone to see who was there. Now the kids text and FB and whatever and arrange to meet lots of others at a certain place.
It is just the way too many young people's attitudes are these days. They have never been told no, disciplined or taught to listen or use common sense.
After some got sick, they said it wasn't worth it. Too late smart.
If they wore masks, stayed away from each other and didn't crowd, things would have be fine. Now that they proved different the greedy Tavern League screams not to protect the bar owners , but to make sure they get their pound of flesh.

What counts is your relationship with them. Do you matter and count to them, either of them? Would advice be taken graciously or would they just tell you where to get off? If it caused a permanent breech, cold you live with it?
The next is how delicately can you offer your opinion or advice. Word it so as to not create ill feelings.Be humble and say just an idea, feeling you have, something you have noticed.
And then, will it make any difference or will they just ignore you, blow it off and proceed just as they are.
Also, just how much do you care and think it will change anything going on.

Retired so just another day and weekend. When I was a kid, mom and I would sit on the cliff and watch them all the way up river from the city. Did it sometimes except the skeeters make it hell to sit.
Went a few times to that city to watch on the grass by the tracks where they hold them.
Or to the other town and sat along the river.
Mostly I hate the 4th. What it means is idiots at large. Boaters down the river shooting them off on the sandbars half the night. Worry in dry years for fires. Jerks shooting them off around the area.
Tourist clogging the roads and stores and towns. This year hasn't slowed them down at all. The town up river is a major tourist trap. Water parks and resorts, so avoid like the plague in summer.
Pests on the river with boom boxes, pavilions, screaming and hollering half the night.

A picture does skew things. If a looker, tons of interest. Blah, no interest. Funny thing is no one wants average even if they are below average.
I got hooked on my guy long before I knew what he looked like. His brain, experiences, knowledge and hobbies all clicked. The only picture he had sent was he and his identical twin in a coaster wagon when about 4 or so.
After a couple months, liking him more and more, I said I want a photo so I know what you look like. Experience of men our age, I figured wouldn't be that exciting. I knew he was slim which was a plus. He finally sent a photo. When I brought it up... I had my boarders wife and my tenants wife up here at the time. I yelled, come look at what I have been writing too!! Talk about hitting the jackpot. I would have been happy with whatever he looked like, but ended up with a movie star. All these years and we have aged and I still think he is super handsome.
Mom always said love and potatos are two of a kind. Both have eyes and both are blind. If you get to know someone first, it doesn't matter what the looks are. And we all will lose them with age anyway.
I didn't like to see photos of my late husband. I realize why. In my mind he looked the way he did when I married him. Photos made me see him as he was. He had trouble when he became an invalid. I got it through to him, love is for keeps. I didn't marry a body, I married a heart and a soul. And those were still there. The body is just a carrier. For better or worse. His looks were imperfect, but to me he was handsome til the day he died.

I have no idea what hangup/hangon/hangten/hangout, or whatever that is. Likewise I don't do whatsapp or any apps. I don't own a Smartphone or anything else that does that app thing. I am not on FB, Twitter or Twitch, or Twaddle or whatever.
Even if I did, no way I give access to my private email or account to a total stranger! My steady and I wrote via Craig's list for months before moving to email. Once we KNEW each other, we talked on the phone and finally met in person.
Letting a stranger into your on line world is the same as inviting someone you just met in a bar home.
