They have to administer massive amounts of chemoso all sorts of complications can come up - liver failure, kidney failure, total organ failure...and all of them have to be paid for or guaranteed before the hospital will begin.
Long story short, the total cost for one year, which included treatment, donor search, and then the transplant was around $2 million dollars. The patient's annual out-of-pocket maximum on his insurance was $5,000 - and that's all they billed him.
People (myself included) often forget that health insurance really only matters when you are faced with a catastrophic illness. The insurance companies use our collective premiums to cover us for the expensive, life saving treatments we need sometimes.

Mitt Romney won big tonight. President Obama got digs in on the former governor over the lack of detail of his proposals, but Romney clearly came out to play hard. The other big winner was the American people. This was a real debate with real differences, real clarity. Too bad voters have had to be assaulted by attack ads and hyper-emotion.
Romney displayed a mastery of the economy, of small business, of health care, of taxes -- of all issues. He was aggressive, something that was deemed risky beforehand, but he did not get personal or mean. He was respectful to the sitting President, but in no way awed by his presence.
While Obama took it to the GOP candidate (Where's the beef? Where are details on tax cuts, on health care?), Romney handled it deftly -- this debate was about principles and style. Romney reminded the President and voters that he was a bipartisan leader who sought and achieved consensus and legislation by working with the other side in Massachusetts.
Romney also showed his differences on Obamacare. This was a difficult task because this could have opened him up to charges of hypocrisy. He is a seasoned debater and this was the discussion on health care we should have had all along.
Obama scored a major point on pre-existing conditions. But Romney came right back to argue that no insurance company would deny service. We will have to see how that plays out but at least the discussion was held and it was civil.
Finally, I had said before the debate that Romney would have to show a command of the economy and put it in personal terms -- a tough task. He did that tonight. The President was uncomfortable, stammering at times. Romney won.
The Romney plan may have served as a template but there are many significant differences between the actual nuts and bolts of the plans. Romney, for example, did not exempt 162 BIG labor unions like Obamacare did (not to mention all the business Nancy Pelosi exempted from her district). Those things all feed into the bottom line when it comes to cost, not to mention the obvious question...WHY did they need to exempt them if Obamacare was so cheap and good for the country?
Agreed. Flat tax or radically simplified tax. They should make it mandatory that both houses of Congress do their own taxes for a year. That would shake things up!
The next debate will favor Obama because it's a Town Hall format and there will surely be people coming in with pre-approved zingers for Romney. But overall, it shows that Obama is quite spoiled by only working with teleprompters and staged events where nobody DARES to talk back to him. Romney came prepared and he had all the facts and figures in his head. Obama looked pinched and sour when he could come up with retorts.
Always leave graciously. Not only don't you want to burn your bridges, but you should always act in a way that shows YOUR character no matter how low their character is. All you can control is how you lead your life...be proud and don't sink to anyone's level but your own.
I'm not so sure it is a vote of no confidence, considering his past affiliations and the work he has done so far. Seems to me he might easily be a card-carrying member.

The drastic reductions in Medicare reimbursements under ObamaCare will create havoc and chaos in health care for seniors. Many doctors, surgeons and specialists providing critical care to the elderly—such as surgery for hip and knee replacements, sophisticated diagnostics through MRIs and CT scans, and even treatment for cancer and heart disease—will cease serving Medicare patients. If the government is not going to pay, then seniors are not going to get the health services, treatment and care they expect.
Mr. Foster reports that two-thirds of hospitals already lose money on Medicare patients. Under ObamaCare it will get much worse. Hospitals also will shut down or stop serving Medicare patients.
