RE: where is everyone gone to

I can never understand this way of thinking that others "make one leave". No one can make you leave CS. It is a decision an individual makes, or if one is out of line - CS makes for them.

I myself have been through my fair share of bashing on this site, and Im still here. I just made the conscious effort to stay away from people I disliked. Its quite simple really.

I enjoy both you own - Godsgift, and scorpiosiren's posts on the Intl, as that is where I spend most of my time these days, but I would hate to see people leave this Irish Forum because of others...

Good evening to you all, and I hope all is well across the Atlantic..wave

RE: Meeting The Folks

I am not sure, but are you Protestant, Jan? I only ask because, as Im sure you already know, the religious divide is there for starters. Also, as Im sure you already know, Catholics in countries like Spain and Italy are somewhat more devote than those in the UK, etc..sorry if Im teaching Gran to suck eggs here!!laugh

I would say that, dependent on how "modern" a Catholic family they are, they will accept you for who you are, and not for what religion or culture you come from.

Im sure you will hold your own, and I am equally sure all will go well. Good luck..handshake

RE: Freedoms

Although I understand you Jan, our pics are really quite different if you look, and of course our profile names are under our respective pictures.

RE: Freedoms

Firstly, I have TWISTED nothing. I have simply given my own point of view, in answer to your posts to me.

Secondly, if you read back through my replies to you, I have not resorted ONCE to sarcasm or any other type of attempted put-down; in fact I have said SEVERAL TIMES that I agreed in part with your views, Riz. I was enjoying our debate, and remained civil at all times in this thread.

dunno

However, if you wish to resort to sarcasm and one word replies, that of course is your preogative.

RE: Ladies beware of "princeoftides1"

laugh laugh

Quite!

Hope you are well, Losty!wave

And in answer to the OP, naming peeps is not really on, do you not think?

One gal's creep is another's Prince..

RE: Freedoms

And I beg to differ, Riz. It was not ME who made that point.

RE: The Best Thing !

That I am the best listener he has ever been with..

RE: Freedoms

To answer your specific question - people in Dublin and people in Cork speak the SAME LANGUAGE - albeit with a different accent. First point addressed..

Yes, I know what Leicester and Nottingham are like - I lived there for a time. The comparison can be made with that comment to going into Chinatown in any large US city, dont you think? In this day and age, any city, or even any town now, consists of diverse cultures and languages; I certainly found that in the part of Ireland I lived in. It was a struggle to find an Irish accent. So, again, although I understand what you are saying Riz, as regards your examples of Romania and Denmark, the point is that even throughout Europe, English may not be the first language, per se, but it is CERTAINLY the universal language of commerce.

I have in fact travelled myself quite extensively, but dont feel the need to explain myself here. Suffice to say, I understand your point completely, but stand firm on the fact that I know what I am talking about as well..

handshake

RE: bye

Well done, Jimbo, Im pleased for you..yay

Enjoy, and I wish you and your new lady all the best..handshake

RE: Freedoms

You are right, the first language IS American English, yes, of course it is. But one has to say that being able to travel 5 miles (or even less, in my recent experience) down the road and be surrounded by people speaking a totally different language is quite bizarre! Even the way the Amish do speak English is totally different to the way the American English speaking locals speak it..

RE: Freedoms

Thats simply not true, is it, Riz??! How can you say that a video/picture of an interstate scene in New York State could be confused with a section of interstate in Arizona/New Mexico, etc?dunno

As regards bougainvillea planted in Greece on the dual carriageways, well, surely that comes down to CLIMATE, not culture? If both Greece and the UK were governed by the same climate, and both countries drove on the same side of the road, I dont think you would see a great deal of difference in the actual scene, really..

To use your example, plants similar to bougainvillea probably grow on the roads in Southern California, to be sure. I cannot think that they would grow in the extreme North West of the US! Its only the same thing as your example of Greece and the UK.

I understand what you are saying, Riz, totallyhandshake

I think it is just somewhat irritating to some Americans that Europeans (just using them as an example!) have a TENDENCY to group all US Citizens together. If that were true, I would say that the struggles in some states to retain their individuality would be non-existent.

RE: Freedoms

Very true..

However, just talking about Native Americans, there are probably at least 20 different languages alone..dunno

RE: Freedoms

Of COURSE the countries in Europe are more different that each individual State in the US. I dont believe that was what was being said in the previous statement.

What was being said was that many countries in the world seem to group all citizens of the USA together as one entity, as Im sure you will agree, Riz - many believe there is one culture, one belief system - which of course simply is NOT true. This is easy to do, as it is under one Federal Umbrella, but the diversity is SIMILAR indeed to each individual Member State of the EU, language included in some cases as well as religion.

RE: Homade Wine

laugh wave

Well, back many years ago, I used to dabble in homemade wines and beers. Could never really get a decent wine going, but the beer was pretty good!laugh

I remember one night, when it was pretty much near done, and we couldnt wait any longer to try it. It was meant to be about 4% proof, but we added a load more sugar to it to bump it up.grin I used to buy the kits in the shops, but then "twiddle" them a little!!

Suffice to say, after a gallon or so, dinner kind of went out the window!!doh laugh

Its an interesting hobby, and I was actually thinking about starting it again soon..

Honeymoon is great!wink blushing

RE: Homade Wine

Hi Larry..wave

Hi Laura..wave

Sounds like you have a good brew going there, Larry! Homemade wine is the best, and of course sooooo much cheaper..

I used to brew my own beer and the demijohns used to make such a comforting "plop" while fermenting over the stove..

Ah, Happy Days..sigh laugh wine

RE: Obama's Birth Certificate... View It Here!

Nope, not at all. I was making a valid point.

RE: Obama's Birth Certificate... View It Here!

Why do always feel the need to be superior, Ginger??dunno

What do you mean - "My part of Ireland"???? Apart from the fact that I spent most of my life in Britain, and therefore benefitted from the wonders of the BBC World Service among, many, many other news sources, oddly enough I too CAN READ..

doh

I was commenting on the fact that the Irish news channels are NO BETTER than other countries in their views, which is basically what you were on a mission to prove regarding US news stations. So, please do not be so patronising (again doh ), and realise that some others on here actually DO HAVE A BRAIN.

RE: christmas

After spending the last few Christmases on my own, and the last one also with raging toothache, I am looking forward to spending this one with the wonderful guy in my life. Just doing the normal, Christmas things that we do, and simply enjoying being together. Simple pleasures..

And it will be probably the first White Christmas for me in many years, so that's a wonderful thought..yay

RE: Obama's Birth Certificate... View It Here!

Exactly..thumbs up

Although I do understand to a degree that some countries' news programs can be somewhat biased and perhaps slightly blinkered, I had to post to make the point that IRELAND'S news programs are some of the most blinkered, xenophobic and insular I have EVER seen!doh If I had limited myself to watching RTE (the Irish TV channel), I would have been in serious danger of never knowing what was going on outside the Emerald Isle. So, I would say that US TV stations are no different to many other countries in the way they portray the news..

I didnt wish to comment on Obama, per se, but I did feel the need to post regarding the question of unbiased and open TV coverage.

RE: How about stirring up some TROUBLE

I do...

RE: Judgemental

A powdered wig and a long, red robe would probably get caught in those tires, Seek..

She says, in a very posh English Accent..professor grin

RE: How about stirring up some TROUBLE

Ah haaaaaaaaaaa..

RE: Judgemental

People who are the most judgemental are the ones that scream from the rooftops that they are NOT. grin

RE: How about stirring up some TROUBLE

RE: How about stirring up some TROUBLE

I personally think these Antipodean Types should get their asses over to the Educated and Enlightened Hempisphere, and stop spouting total Aussie-Influenced BS from afar..

RE: How about stirring up some TROUBLE

So are we..grin

What thread shall we sabotage??grin devil devil devil

RE: Securing your country's future

Hi Vin..wave Stop draining the UK social welfare fund, by the way!!laugh Just kidding, my friend!

And yes, he is looking after me very well..grin

I agree with your comment about education priorities. Think that is the only way we can attempt to secure a future for our respective countries. However, that is a non-starter if the people teaching the kids are of a biggoted and blinkered opinion. Yes, we have to look to the future to improve things, but we really need to look NOW at what kind of attitudes we have towards other countries, dont you think??

As regards the US is concerned, and also, as far as Im concerned, Britain as well, the best thing we can do is look away from foreign oil dependancy and develop other green methods of energy.

RE: Your CS success stories here, and disaster stories.

Ive been quite lucky on here, compared to alot of others, it seems. I never really had alot of scammers bothering me, or if I did I never made a big deal out of it, and never really noticed them. Block and delete..

I had one bad experience, but given the amount of members here I think that was bound to happen.

My story has turned out very well; I met my guy here, and we are very happy. All was as it seemed, no surprises, no lies, so I have nothing but good to say about sites like CS.

RE: How do I get rid of this cold??

Hi SO, I sympathise! I have an awful headcold too..

Im being dosed up with Alka Seltzer Plus, Ginger Brandy and Tynenol. I think it is keeping it at bay, but in the longrun you have to just let these things run its course. Im not straying too far from the couch..

Hope you get better soon. Jesse's made some wonderful bean soup, and thats all I feel like eating right now, so I will Fedex some down!

Otherwise, I will meet you in the Swine Flu Recover Ward!laugh wave
