RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

My hubbie..grin

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Seriously, I have to say I watch the CBC National News quite alot, and do enjoy it. I am now multi-lingual too, as I hear quite clearly the Canadian Accent as opposed to the US onelaugh

I am not standing up for any particular country here, and I dont wish to go too far off topic, in respect to the OP (who appears to have disappeared, by the way!dunno )..suffice to say, I do enjoy having a varied perspective now, and try to always see the real side of things.

I think thats the point. Alot of people on the Forums HAVE travelled, and therefore ARE in a position to debate something such as this topic. What makes me very, very angry is people who have never been to the country in discussion.

dunno

I, for instance, would never enter a discussion about life in China, as Ive never lived there, or even been on holidays there. very mad

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

wink blushing blushing

Jesse's not working this week..grin

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

I enjoy being ME. I belong to no country, or Im certainly not biased toward one particular one. I enjoy being able to have the ability to see things from the ACTUAL perspective, rather than the PERCEIVED perspective..

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Nope, not here either..

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

I am half English, half Irish..and I married an American..

That, I am very pleased to say, gives me triple the perspective..grin

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Read my last post!!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

Apart from the fact that what you say is WRONG! US support and interest in the Irish People began WAYYYYY before the Kennedy Administration/Family..doh laugh

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Apart from the fact that that was really quite a poor attempt at sarcasm, you completely missed the point of my post to the OP too!laugh

The point I was making is that OF COURSE there is a very strong tie between the US and Ireland - Jeez!!laugh So, if that is the case, and Ireland is sooooo enamoured with the States and jumps on any bandwagon it can to associate themselves with their American Friends (as I was TRYING TO CONVEY IN MY COMMENT ABOUT THE OBAMA SWEARING IN!!), why, in the next instance, are they complaining, whinging, bashing the USA????!

That was the WHOLE POINT of my post!!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Whats your point??!grin

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Ok, I will concede that it was an ALLIED LEAD force. However, once again, if Sadaam had actually carried through with the promises he gave, and on which he was given NUMEROUS chances to do so, as in allowing inspection of suspect sites, then NO ONE would have had to go there in the first place.

laugh laugh thumbs up

I was just wondering, where the gentleman got his statistics from..dunno laugh laugh

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Re "uneducated on history outside America" - Thats a very common misconception, and untrue..

thumbs down

I will concede that perhaps that USED to be a little the case, but certainly no more. The children in US schools these days, I have discovered, learn about subjects and levels of subjects that certainly I myself, having been educated elsewhere, never got to. Their levels of understanding, and curriculum requirements when in their younger years are FAR higher than mine ever were, and I consider myself an intelligent and well educated woman.

As regards the "gun issue" - well, that is always an emotive subject, even INSIDE the USA. You have your view, and thats fine. HOWEVER, the point is this. The right to bear arms was fought for, and as you know is now rooted in the US Constitution. Given the fact that you are from Ireland, and I assume Irish, you should know BETTER THAN ANYONE how important it is to stand up for your beliefs and stand by them, even if it means fighting for them. So, in that respect, I find it very contradictory that you should even go anywhere near passing judgement on another countries' rights..

RE: Americans are viewed around the world as

Yes...quite a few actually!!grin

Firstly, after reading through the entire thread so far, I have a few questions for you, kev..

Have you ever spent any time at all in the US? If you have, was that just a vacation or some REAL time living here??

If you started this thread with an open mind on Americans, as you have stressed several times that you have, why did you only give two very biased and generally negative choices in the poll regarding people's views on Americans?dunno Surely, if you really wanted an "open" poll, you would have included some less negative choices??

Why do you think that USA "invaded" Iraq"?? And if you do, why do you focus on the Americans in particular? The force that is there (and in other so called "US Invaded Countries" is a UN force, not a US force..as I recall, Irish troops are ALSO serving there, if you want to get picky about it..

To try and say that you started this thread with an "open mind" is ridiculous, given the two poll choices you offered. If you wish to express yourself, then do, but dont be hypocritical about it.

RE: What Are You Eating/Drinking?

Firstly, have you got a deathwish??dunno laugh

Secondly, given the fact that your profile states you are carrying a "few extra pounds", I wouldnt be so quick to bandy the size issue around, if I were you..laugh

Apart from anything else, that was quite a rude thing you posted.doh

RE: BIG: THANK YOU IRELAND !

Are you??confused Why??dunno

Im not. In the slightest. The cry for independence and Irish solidarity is loud. For a while. Then, people come back to reality, take their rose tinted (or orange, green and white-tinted) glasses off and realise that Ireland is in no way in a position to stand on its own.

The constant changes in minds are part of the Irish Psyche. Nothing new there..if the tribes and clans etc had come together, stayed together and stood united in the past, then Irish history would be a tad different, I would say.

Once again, you reap what you sow.

Thinking the Best of People..

I must be very stupid, then. Because I HAVE had bad experiences in the past, but still have this happen occasionally..

I dont think it really matters how "streetwise" someone is; when you are dealing with certain types of people, I think they can deceive the smartest of us..

Jesse has been around the block. He knows the score of most things. He had his suspicions a while ago about this person's temperment but, once again, tried to give him the benefit of the doubt..

frustrated

Thinking the Best of People..

Well, thanks, sis..

I will always be a soft Petal, but sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I had more thorns..

Thinking the Best of People..

Yep, thanks Larry..

Wise words as always..thumbs up

I posted the thread because I am certain that we are not the only people who feel that being "nice" can be a burden sometimes, rather than an attribute. Im not changing who I am, and nor is Jesse, but it does make you question your own methods sometimes..dunno

Thinking the Best of People..

Just to make it clear!! This is not an issue between Jesse and myself..its actually to do with a tenant that we have had staying in our house here, who we basically discovered today had been lying to us about certain things.

I spent an hour yesterday, talking with this person, giving him a second chance after issuing a Notice to Quit. Today, we find out that he totally disregarded everything I asked and actually made things worse.

Jesse and I are both very angry, and upset, to a degree, as we are both caring people who treat others with respect and simply expect the same back..

Thinking the Best of People..

Yes, I agree..thumbs up

I am just fed up to the back teeth with people in this world taking advantage of other people's good nature..

It seems to make no difference what age group people are, so you cannot blame a certain generation for their failings in this regard. It just seems to be a virus that spreads throughout humanity that some think they can "pull the wool over your eyes", as I would say..

I would rather, as you, be taken a few times than to become a hard, cynical person. But sometimes, it doth test you..

Thinking the Best of People..

Something happened in my life today that really tested my faith in human nature..very mad

I have always been a generally optimistic kinda person, and have always strived to see the best in people. I have always felt that was the best way to be, although it has left me open to being messed around.

Without going into great detail, today I discovered that once again, someone has taken both me and my partner for a fool.

Do you think its better to be this caring about people, and try to see the best in them, or do you think its better to just be a skeptical all the time??

RE: Do you feel lonley?

I am lucky enough to say I dont feel lonely any more..

But I used to, yes. The evenings were the worst, especially the dark, winter ones when you cant even go out for a walk or suchlike. I used the TV and CS for company, when I was lonely rather than head down to the bar, because I knew that was dangerous..scold

I remember last Christmas. It was a nightmare. I woke up on Christmas Morning at 3am, with a raging toothache. I had no painkillers in the house, and not even any alcohol strong enough to take the pain away. I felt so lonely, like I was the only person left in the world after a holocaust. I would have given anything for a hug, or a cuddle or even a friendly smile..

Luckily, I found an emergency dentist who very kindly saw me especially on Christmas Morning and gave me some pain relief. I slept the rest of the day.

I will never forget that day though. I have never felt so lonely and sorry for myself and aching for human touch.

Anytime in the future, that I want "space", or someone else irritates me, or I loose track of my priorites in life, I will think back to that day, and bless myself many times for the love and company and support I have now found..
