In early 1986 five duds held a meeting in San Fransisco, they then obtained access to the world wide media and pumped out you do this or that, you gunner die, you gunner die. Life certainly is a learning curve, without hot we cannot judge cold. Took a long time to sort some my stuff out to (some still ongoing) however it appears to me while our mind is focused outside of ourselves, there isn't any space for self pity. Therefore the more we focus on benefiting others the less suffering we our selves experience. The practice I've tried to run with, is a two fold path e.g. important to still the mind and the gaining of understanding part.
Like the skins of an onion, ever deeper levels of stuff we are able to gain knowledge of by observing our mind.
Society norm in Afghanistan either under the War lords, Taliban or the current Occupation is for those living there societies norm. I personally found America the most dangerous western nation i ever visited, heaps and heaps of religious crack pots, gun slinger's all over the place, bank robberies where the robbers shoot everybody in the bank, all sorts of norms in there society i can well live without. More people visit shrinks in that country than any where else on the globe that i know of. Yet it claims to be the leader of the free capitalist world, bumkin, your on your own in life, we will all die alone so might as well face up to working our stuff out, to put someone down instead of assisting is wrong pal
Clearly we would disagree... The guy has stuff he is attempting to come to terms with, to put him down isn't going to help him do that. I rejected societies norms a long long time ago, there prevailing dogma is indeed in my opinion harmful, try bring your family up in Afghanistan dud and see how long you hold your ridiculous thoughts
I think your nuts, nobody has to fit to society, that's nonsense. Everybody has stuff they need to deal with, and nobody has same experiences, to judge that others must conform to an out of control dishonest, greedy society is ridicules. Society needs to get rid of its dogma and start understanding the needs of its citizens rather than pushing there collective crap on others.
Perhaps best to figure out what we want to be doing with our life and get on and do it... Trying to find happiness inside our selves can be likened to a cat chasing its tail. I think happiness occurs while we are engaged in benefiting others...
Oh no i wasn't criticising your view. I knew you had a take on it.
First met Tibetans in 1979, 1982/83 formally made study here in Australia, went on to develop a centre with lady, that got desecrated; 1989 first time in presence of HHDL in the Adelaide Anglican Cathedral, HHDL handed Bishop a flame who then charged that I explain interdependent arising of so called criminal activity which was what HHDL had been discussing. That's now recorded in law in two countries, one aspect in part can be found bottom of my home page robplum.com, the other family court unable to publish...2003 HHDL requested i construct and file on behalf his government in exile UN document...filed, ongoing chatter international affairs...me just student to mate.
One object of meditation is to still the mind. Another is contemplation, in respect the latter, Mahayana path requires guidance from a qualified teacher, a person having qualifications such as a Geshe or Rinpoche. To the best of my knowledge they don't make reference to proper enlightenment being dependant on the importance of ones understanding of nature, as enlightenment to my mind, refers to, ceasing creating the cause for rebirth.
Our thoughts, "I think this or that", comes from mind. It can be debated the true nature of mind is clear light. Buddhism a philosophy includes many aspects of its teachings directed towards assisting our understanding of right view which are found by utilizing our thought process\mind.
The simplistic view that i had herein expressed was an explanation in response to the question posed pertaining to ego.
Your view in part "lt is the self-serving nature of the Mind/ego that creates suffering as this is not the proper order. The proper order can be seen in Nature, Gravity=Planet, Radiance=Star/Sun. The planet orbits the Sun, Simples! This is the importance of Nature, it is our map to proper alignment, and right-relationship...To live in Harmony with ones environment is to recognise the immense value of this map"! Is your view not mine. I certainly don't criticise your view however respectfully i reply we clearly disagree
The last Pope expressed Buddhism and the Vatican's teachings as incompatible, and I agree
Dunno if this helps but I'll try; you might have heard the word Emptiness which can be used to describe the inherent none existent nature of self. Or that, that we perceive as self or "I". "I" Robert...mere label, a serious look.
Carefully contemplating ones own anatomy having regard to our bodies constant changing nature, and yes bound up in time, even the bones. A mediator is able to deduce our physical form cannot from its own side cannot be said to actually exist, it can be stated it exists in interdependence however. For example our skin is constantly shed. Our body is sixty percent (or some think) water, our food is broken down used or excreted, there is no aspect of our physical form (being)that can be said to truly exist.
The "I" (self) therefore is actually a delusion. The Tibetans version of Buddhism is an interpretation of (in the Mahayana view) the Buddha meant. Best as i can tell its actually based on twenty seven words the Buddha said on completion of his twenty seven year meditation. (I'm happy to be corrected on that) However the path the Buddha taught explains the benefit of developing the mind directed towards benefiting others. In short, the human (and also animal) (being that has mind and fears death), our rebirth that we are currently experiencing appears as a delusion driven by desire... Everything is actually impermanent, including our bodies, girl friends, family, car, house bank account the whole lot bound up in time is a delusion.
The path as i understand it, is benefit others as much as possible, and by that i don't mean just give everything away. Rather I think better to develop our motivation so its constantly directed towards helping other sentient beings. In our minds by taking away our own self interest, in developing our thoughts towards benefiting others, no time to feel self pity for you own "I". Yes bit simplistic but that is what my "I" thinks hehehehe
I guess i should add, if we ourselves hadn't in the first place created the seeds for the suffering we feel\felt it wouldn't of happened in the first place. Put another way ultimately I do also perceive myself as the creator of my own sufferings and need myself to understand that to before the suffering thoughts completely diminish.
The variations of the cause and effects of the karmas giving rise to our suffering comes not only from our on ignorance but of course the impute others contributed, thus understanding the cause helps us to correctly address what there is to correct. So i think its important to observe all aspects that gave rise to the hurt our ego perceives otherwise nothing to giggle about...
In my mind compassion has nothing to do with the usual meaning of the word love what so ever, though i have heard words like loving kindness used by Tibetans to describe compassion, i find the common use of the word love quite misleading. Its my understanding compassion means understanding the nature of the interdependent arising, e.g. having regard of the ignorance those hurting us suffer as well regard of our own short comings.
Yeah Robert i can attests thats how it is. Nothing like a good giggle at the hurt you felt, cause you probably did feel really hurt. I've been doing just what Deepak Chopra describes (whoever he be) and can honestly attest that's how mind actually works. Its what there is to work with, what actually is, so might just as well observe our mind...
I believe you can overcome most levels of pain by forcing yourself to focus your mind on the pain, e.g with your mind you focus intensely on the pain, the pain will most often go away. You might try going out into the next strong wind that blows, and force yourself to stand out in it. But please if you do try that make sure your not putting yourself in any danger by standing under a tree or something, cause yes of course, if your in danger its right to be aware of your feelings.
