Easter Blues

Everything seems lackluster after Easter, spring has arrived yet it is still cold. Everyone is recovering or still has the flu, business is slow, time drags and nothing looks interesting.

Roll on May... Summer holidays, sunny days, warm light evenings to get out and about and brighten the mood. 6 weeks of bliss to do as I please, long lie in’s, brunch’s on the patio, weekend BBQ’S, cream tea’s in the afternoon, evening strolls and a glass of wine to watch the sun go down..... Heavenly!

Another Tunnel, A New Adventure

I have heard tell of a railway tunnel that few men have set eyes upon since it was abandoned many years ago. Many have sought it, and many out of that many have never returned. And few of the few who have returned claim to have found it. And it is for this reason I am able to say that few men have set eyes on that tunnel. We cannot know, of course, how many of the many who sought to find the tunnel and never returned did find the tunnel, but it is thought to be very few. I mean to find that tunnel and be one of the few of the few who have found it and returned. Although those few won’t be quite so few once I become one of them.

The Tunnel is said to lie 15 miles or so northwest of here, as the crow flies, but I will be cycling. I ride next Friday morning, weather permitting. Friday is my earliest window of opportunity, as I do my weekly shopping on Thursday and will have to wait until then before I am able to provision my journey. I always take a packed lunch when I go out and I don’t want to have to make an extra trip to the shops, so it has to be after Thursday. That’s why Friday is my earliest Window of opportunity.

I anticipate many trials on my quest, and quite a few challenges, so I expect to be out all morning and possibly into the afternoon. That’s why it is important I take a packed lunch, and why I must wait until after Thursday before I go. I will be logging in here early on Friday morning, as I know many of my supporters, or a good few of them, will want to see me off. wave

GRUMP TIME - Just because you can...

Remember the days when you used to sit in a friend’s car on a wet Sunday afternoon, waving a cheap transistor radio around, poking other passengers in the eye with the aerial as you tried to hunt down the best signal so you can all listen to ‘the game’?

What about more recently, when you'd struggle with those tiny televisions, again, playing rotating and contorting yourself in order to see the movie you'd been banned from watching - often in bed, under the covers and long after you’re supposed to be asleep?

Technology is meant to be progressive, yet you're still watching a (possibly illegally) downloaded copy of a blockbuster movie, designed to be watched on a wall the size of the Hoover Dam, on a smartphone with a screen the size of a Post-It note.

There are apps for so many things - too many things in my view - which we get wrapped up in what we can do with our device:

• I can use it instead of my spirit level
• I can use it instead of my egg timer
• I can calculate the azimuth of this planet, the albedo of that star whilst rating the cuteness of people’s kittens on a scale of 1 to 10
• I can turn it into a fake Star Trek Tricorder, Doctor Who’s Sonic Screwdriver or hide my porn... erm - sensitive business documents behind a fake calculator app, even though nobody actually has access to my tablet!

So why do we (hypothetically, in my case (ehem)) do it?

Just because we can…!

Fridge Magnets

An awareness of my need to find a means of displaying useful information in such a way as to keep it beyond the bounds of forgetfulness came upon me a while back. A timetable of refuse collection days would be a good example of such information. It took a surprising length of time for me to come up with the solution of fridge magnets.

Some people collect fridge magnets from the places they visit on holiday, but I never go anywhere. Others like “humorous” ones that express their personality, even when it would be better left unexpressed. They don’t seem to make fridge magnets that express my personality, and I wouldn’t want anybody to see them if they did. Besides, I don’t like that sort of thing; it’s no better than T-shirts with slogans printed on them.

When I looked on-line I was disappointed to find that nobody sells fridge magnets that are just magnets. The ones I reluctantly settled for are meant to look like little hands performing the thumbs up gesture, although you would have to study them for some time before that became apparent. I prefer them not to be studied at all.

What’s that I hear you say, “they are only effing fridge magnets, for God’s sake, what’s the big deal?” But it is a big deal, and it’s not just fridge magnets. Everywhere you look they are trying to sell you “fun” items to cheer up your home. I don’t want a cheerful home, and I don’t want anyone brainwashing me into thinking things are fun. And if I were looking for fun I would be hoping for more than a magnet that looks like an arse.

Anyway, I have to admit that my fridge magnets did do the job they were intended for, and for that reason alone I felt obliged to give them a five-star review on Amazon.

positive thinking

Just over a week ago I never knew what a blog was.
So now I do i thought i,d have a go at this blogging lark.
At my age I,ve found that a lot of my generation have a negative attitude and I had one up until a while ago.
I met a man in his 80,s and we had a long conversation and became friends.
He changed my life because he taught me to : Only stay with positive poeple and walk away from negative poeple when out and about.
I now employ this everyday. When I get a negative comment on my blog I delete it and do,nt reply .I don,t do negative I walk away.
Positive attracts positive.
Yesterday i went on a train with my push bike to lagos .
The man that collected the fares came to me I offered him my passport as proof of my age because we get a huge discount on our fares.
He looked at me and shook his head and said this photograph of you you have a beard and mistache I,m sorry .
I looked at him and smiled he looked at me and smiled and in perfect English said" we know you english like a joke" and gave me the ticket with the discount.I laughed and said in portugese "you had me worried there for a moment"
Later when he had finished collecting he came back and sat opppsite me and we had a good chat .
So the moral of the story I smiled when he said no .Positive.

They’ll get you in the end

They say you can lead a horse to water but can’t make it drink. A way round that might be to take the water to the horse and just wait for it to give in.

I don’t own a smartphone; all I can do with my phone is make calls and send and receive text messages. It’s not because I’m cheap that I won’t buy a smartphone, it is because I can foresee the consequences that would inevitably follow from my getting one and I don’t like what I (fore)see.

When I am at home I can’t stay away from my computer. Even when I am busy I keep stopping to check on something or look something up. When I leave the house it is a relief to get away from the damned thing. The last thing I would want to do is take it with me when I go out, but, if I had a smartphone, that, in effect, is what I would be doing.

Last week the company I work for told us that all the drivers were to be issued with smartphones. doh
