A Gift In The Hay

On the long trek to the barn
The snow crunches under my feet
From somewhere in the trees
A hoot owl gives it's mournful cry
The sweet smell of hay greets me as I open the door

The new calf is up and nursing, a worry no more
As I step back out my breath appears in a cloud of stem,
It's a night of beauty, a moment to dream

Stars twinkle in a crisp, clear sky
Prompting me to wonder again
"Why? Why?"
God chose to have His Holy Son born in a barn, laid of hay

When He with such divine power had the choice of any way
Did he plan that the keepers of lowly cattle and sheep
Be the first believers of the gift of the babe asleep?

For the angels led the herdsmen
On their long way
To the precious, tiny child swaddled in rags and hay
I began to hum "Silent Night" as I follow the pathway
So thankful for all of god's gifts, born in the hay.

The Tupelo Teddy Bear.

Are you Lonesome tonight without True Love?
Is your Wooden Heart heavy with care?
Then just for Ol’ Times Sake, please read my story,
of the Tupelo Teddy Bear;
Many stories are told, each in Separate Ways.
Now in My Way it’s told through his songs.
It Feels So Right that I tell it this way,
for then in My Way I can right all the wrongs.

The Cotton Candy Land of the American South,
is from where the Teddy Bear came.
Way down in Memphis Tennessee.
It’s where Heartbreak Hotel came to fame;
Good Rockin’ Tonight it was all the rage.
And the Party was starting to swing.
And miss Polk Salad Annie, she was telling the world,
“This Teddy Bear, he sure knows the way how to sing”.

Now Colonel Parker, who was a Big Boss Man,
heard the Teddy Bear sing for his Ma.
Then he took him aside, with his Young Dreams and pride,
and said ”My Boy, I want to make you a star”.
The Poor Boy said, “Shake A Hand on that
but I Beg Of You, please, Treat Me Nice.
For soon I’ll be King Of The Whole Wide World,
then Fame And Fortune will demand a price”.

And true to his Words did he Follow That Dream.
‘Cause From A Jack To A King he rose.
Along the way doing GI Blues,
as a Soldier Boy Uncle Sam chose;
But then Trouble for the first time marred his dream,
when in his own Words he said,
“I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell like a baby,
when I heard That’s Alright (Mama) was dead”.

But with one Burning Love gently going out,
another had Come along in his life.
And to the Young And Beautiful Priscilla Beaulieu,
he said “How Would You Like To Be my wife”?
“Love Me Tender” was her sweet reply.
“Then All That I Am I’ll give free”.
And true to her Words she bore him a child,
a Baby named Lisa Marie.

But too soon Summer Kisses turned to Winter Tears,
for their marriage So High had gone low.
And then to his surprise she said “I Don’t Wanna Be Tied,
you Stop Where You Are, I’ll go;
He cried “Without Love (There Is Nothing).
You’re A Heartbreaker who’s so unkind.
Yet though you’re leaving me Indescribably Blue,
you’re still Gentle On My Mind”.

to be continued in a bit

Looking Through Mom's Books

Looking through mom's old books
You never know what you'll find;
Perhaps an old pressed Douglas iris,
My mother's favorite kind.

I found a dog-eared page
And wondered whether she ever came back;
A bill of sale for a gelding horse,
His saddle and all his tack.

The Hall

I walked thru the empty halls.
Where memories echoed off the walls.
I found it hard to breathe,
as emotion swept thru me.
My vision blurred from so many thoughts.
Like the fly in a spider web, that was caught.
Memories all so very clear.
And end with me being here.

ALONE

Eyes cast downward.
Head bent, hiding face.
Wanting not to be seen.
Feeling so out of place.
Everyone so clean and crisp.
He wished he could be.
As they were.
So happy, so carefree.
The little boy who talked with a lisp.
The bell rang all headed to the door.
No hurry for him.
No home not anymore.
Years go by.
He never asked why.
But always he felt so out of place.
For the memories could never be erased.

About this poem:
I think most of us have known someone like this little boy in our life time. I don't know why but today I was thinking about a man I went to school with. And I know in a class room somewhere sits this little boy once more :-(
A smile a kind word does not cost anything and you can give it to someone and it might change there whole day.

Beautiful Doris Day

Que sera sera
Whatever will be will be
The futures not ours to see
Que sera sera
The incomparable blonde beauty Doris Day
Such an elegant mannerism sophisticated way
She spoke softly sensitively touching your heart
It would happen whatever from beginning to start
The silver screen was designed for her
All walks of life sister parents and brother
A pleasure to watch her kindness ways
Looking back to all of this I am in a daze
For Doris Day touched my heart always
Onward Christian soldier for many days
Que sera sera
Whatever will be will be
The futures not ours to see
Que sera sera

Shades of Blue part 3

Old Jim tries to recall
The shops that they trawled,
And the pubs that they sampled
Both big and small
How Sue got tipsy in the Brazen Head
And carved their names on the B and Bs bed
The lave lamp she bought, in Hector Greys
The height of fashion in those days,
Now all but consigned to the scrapheap of life
Like so many things that once seemed
So shiny and bright.
And how she laughed and giggled
At the looks they were getting
From the nosy little checker
On the Double decker
As they kissed and cuddled
On their way across the Liffy
Heading for the Northside of the City
And he,checking his reflection
In those new Steve McQueen shades
Man, he thought he was perfection
In those bargain bin days...
Old Jim finds it hard to suppress a grin
As he lights another smoke, and takes it all in
How they braved the hawkers and the beggers and the cons
All ready to relieve them of their notes and coins
He nods in remembrance and has to smile
Yes, the country bumpkin could be spotted for miles
They visited the pool halls and the greasy spoons
And a penny arcade, he thinks it was called the Dunes
He even bought a cuckoo clock down in Guineys
But that bird was last seen hovering over Killiney
Funny, how all my birds eventually head for warmer climes..
Mutters Jim, with more than a hint of sarcasm
As the needle finds another groove
And the music kicks in
He pulls the pin on another tin
Fuelling his journey back in time
And as three am chimes
He raises a glass
To the past...
To those rare auld times
And that long weekend
That he thought... would never end
And to absent friends...and lovers
Now lost and gone..
Lost and gone forever.

Shades of Blue
For missing you
Shades of Blue
For Jim and Sue
And Phil to..
And Shades of Blue
For January 1972

The vinyl goes around and around
Silent now, bar that crackly sound
As Jim snores
And dreams of better times...
His cigarette totters on the ashtray
Its smoke curling, hastening...
The old polaroids decay..

Forget Me Not

Forget me not my love You'll always have my heart. Where time and love and people meet We'll never be apart. And now with times uncertain And the outcome is unclear; Remember that I loved you And in my heart you're always near.

a"Knight's day"

Graced at eighteen hands high
a peened suit of armour that stands six foot five
a double edge sword...hardly a man could wield
from the saddle hangs their kings crested shield

kingdom's safe
his majesty's served
private quarters privileged very first day
armies, thieves, foe at bay
I Knight thee "Sir Noble"
not a word said
the dark horse'd knight bowed
armour masked
her identity within.
