On Being Beta

I don't mind much being Beta,
Sometimes a test, but it's okay.
Though some look down there is no shame,
In letting life play out its play.

Sometimes I take bull by the horns,
If that is what I feel's called for.
But mostly I just roll along,
Cause that is just my nature's core.

So be it good or be it bad,
I know that nice guys finish last.
And if that's not your cup of tea,
I cannot help what die has cast.

You live your life and I'll live mine,
We'll just agree to disagree.
I hope that we can still be friends,
Cause that's the way a Beta be.

Hunger

Real hunger clouds the judgement so,
All traps use tasty food as bait.
When love is what you hunger for,
It makes you rush when you should wait.

If lonliness brings hunger's pain,
You must beware the siren's song.
Don't let your need select for you,
The first one that should come along.

While tangled in love's tender trap,
With someone that is not your one,
You could miss one that better fits,
Your heart, when all is said and done.

My hunger for a love that's true,
Has led me often far astray,
So if I move too slow for you,
I strive to keep the wolf at bay.

Seasons

Someone asked me recently,
What was my favorite season.
I had to think on that a bit,
Which one and for what reason.

Autumn is so colorful,
Ah, the smell of burning leaves.
Pumkin pies and turkey legs,
Bright sweaters with long sleeves.

Winter's crisp and cold can be,
Quite refeshing too, you know.
Gutters hung with icicles,
Over freshly fallen snow.

Swimming in the summer time,
With bikinis and short-shorts.
Lemonade and car'mel corn,
While we're watching summer sports.

But raking leaves can be a chore,
Shov'ling snow, attacks can bring.
Summer sun and heat may burn,
So that only gives the spring.

Tender, sweet young limbs unfurl,
With bloom shyly opening.
Moss spreading ov'r gentle knolls,
Ah, the loving kiss of spring.

Where I live

Down here where I live folks take it slow,
"Hurry"'s not a word they understand.
Ev'rything's put off til tomorrow,
Nothing's ever done when it was planned.

Even when they've got something to sell,
When you come to buy, they disappear.
Won't hear from'm for days and then they'll say,
"Waited for you man, but you weren't here."

Starting to adapt, but is that wise?
Becoming one of'm may be mistake.
Will I never get things done on time?
Guess that's just a chance I'll have to take.

Time will tell the tale, I will not change.
Just assume a false identiy.
Need protective coloration here,
It's my life, but it's not really me.

I'd sure like to stop and look around,
Guess that's just goin' to have to wait.
'Cause exploring takes much time, I've found,
And besides I'm running much too late.

"I Love You"

Have you ever said "I love you,"
And then been left hung out to dry?
The silence can be deafening,
Almost enough to make you cry.

It's not something I'd recommend,
For it's not pleasant in the least.
It comes from falling way too fast.
Sometimes this love can be a beast.

It may work out but maybe not,
When it is just too soon to tell.
But unrequited love can be,
Just your own little slice of Hell.

So then you have to wait and see,
If all your dreams are coming true,
And if the one that one that you adore,
Will say those three words, "I love you."

I Will Wait

He's getting his chance, I must wait.
He's failed before, I will just wait.
I do not wish, anything bad.
But still I say, his chance he had.

You loved him so, for oh so long,
He'd not commit, he did you wrong.
But still you give another chance.
This proves belief in true romance.

I am patient, I will just wait.
He'll show his stripe, I just must wait.
When time has come I know you'll see.
The one you want is only me.

When you're ready, here I will be.
Then you will know, your one is me.
But until then, here I will wait.
Waiting for you to glean our fate.

Love Realized

When I hold you, in my two arms,
On that sweet day when first we touch,
Then you will know, beyond a doubt,
You've found the one you want so much.

And I'll know too, because of you,
I will no longer have to wait.
All of my dreams can now come true,
So darling please don't hesitate.

When we are one we'll have such fun,
'Cause we've already learned to play.
We'll have a ball, we'll do it all,
As through life's paths, we make our way.

So take my hands and look to me,
As in our eyes the tears will form.
We'll realize, each other's eyes,
Are all we need to keep us warm.

Him or Me?

Will it br him? Will it be me?
I guess in time, we both will see.
With him you have, some history.
We are brand new. Who will it be?

He won't commit. I'm ready to.
He'll run around. I'll just love you.
You think he'll change, but I think not.
A leopard doesn't change his spot.

Some guys are good, and some are bad.
Just think about the loves you've had.
They've let you down, betrayed your trust.
They've treated you in ways unjust.

I will not harm. I will not fail.
And next to mine his charms will pale.
You can depend on what you see.
Please baby girl rely on me.

Please take my heart and take my hand.
And very soon you'll understand.
I will not cheat. I will not lie.
This you will see as time goes by.

My "New" Car

I've hitched around all this past year.
Yeah I've been down, but have no fear.
Have found a car to call my own.
Bought it today, glad to the bone.

I've gotten rides from folks so nice,
But oh, to drive, is paradise.
Taken so long to get to here,
Now that I have, grin ear-to-ear.

Where should I go, now that I can?
Go shoot some pool? Go hear a band?
Or see a friend, who lives nearby?
No limits now, that I can fly.

The car is old, but in good shape,
And here and there needs some duct tape.
So fun to drive, just when I want.
Want to go with? Come, sit in front!

Footshot

I seem to have a talent for,
Destroying all my efforts put.
By taking very careful aim,
To shoot myself in my own foot.

Once had a job in telephones,
And could have stayed forever,
But quit to work for an old friend,
Thought I was being clever.

His business skills turned out to be,
The cause of our undoing.
Went belly up with taxes owed,
And all the woes ensuing.

Then found some work in finances,
A vice-president was I,
They moved away but I chose not,
Another job gone bye-bye.

So now I search the want-ads for,
Some sort of a position,
But no one's hiring 'cause of the,
Economy's condition.

I think I'll hang a shingle out,
An idea that cannot fail.
Be my own boss, work when I want,
"Custom poetry for sale."
