Not very likely, with only 5 working helicopters today and fewer than 200 vehicles, but no open roads.., question for you becomes how?

RE: we are awesome

After a refreshing swim in the Bronx River on hot days, all the kids would take turns picking the leeches off each other.

RE: feel excited

I just wish we could forward some of it to destinations off CS to keep it from being auto deleted and lost when the sender leaves CS.

RE: Gullible

I am pleased to report the American State of Utah (home of the Mormon religion) recently voted to approve returning to the firing squad as a method of execution.

As the article shows shooting tends to be 9 times faster than lethal injection as a cause of death. Not quite as quick as beheading, but we haven't made guillotines in awhile.

The last famous Utah execution of Gary Gilmore was done by tax payers who volunteered to fire the fatal shot and were chosen by lottery.

It remains to be worked out what method will be chosen for selecting future executioners.

RE: Just In Time

"The pork, bacon, and ham remained untouched"

Definitely a clue. I would if the police check street vendors in certain neighborhoods for the television and other specified items. That's if the police care. Even in the US in some overwhelmed departments reports of burglaries and auto thefts get no investigation, just a report with a number for insurance company. Not all though. Some do still investigate theft. Today's thief is tomorrows killer, so catch them now is how some view it.

BTW, such burglaries are common in the US. Many homes have attached garages and thieves just cruise the neighborhoods after the work day has begun looking for the house with the open garage door and no car in sight. Like your thieves, they drive into the garage and close the door behind them, then kick in the interior door and take what they wish. Woe to the unarmed occupant sometimes left behind while the other works. Woe to the burglars if the occupant is armed.

Always keep your garage door closed.

I think clean water is going to be a real concern there by the end of the week.

RE: NEPAL IS JUST A WARNING FROM GOD! WARNING ! WARNIN

You sound like a total NUT. Nepal is the meeting place of two tectonic plates. This has been known for a very long time and the Earthquake was known to be overdue and just a question of when.

RE: What would you do....

Well your 'long procedure' sounds a lot like America's eviction process. As a Landlord here from time to time I have had to spend the few dollars and begin the 'long procedure' to throw someone out when they wear out the welcome. I have never regretted doing so. On the day you commence the long procedure, tell them you have done so and want them to leave and the procedure has commenced (here the local sheriff also visits them and provides a copy of the filing). 7 times out of 10 simply knowing you are serious and have already done the court filing is enough for them to move out voluntarily. Remember to show up anyway for any scheduled court dates just in case they lie to the court and pretend they are still there. If you miss a court date YOU filed, you automatically lose if they play that game.

At 07:18 UTC an aftershock of 6.7 magnitude struck East (this time) of Kathmandu.

At this time is believed towns and villages in this new area which were not damaged in the prior incident may have significant damage now and their own new casualties.

RE: Sunday touring...

This is how NASCAR began here. Kids racing cars.

RE: Gullible

Ignoring the fact the last post was all over the rainbow and somewhat unfocused, I will focus on one thought conveyed.

"No innocent person should ever be murdered simply because of a belief that the guilty should be murdered as punishment."

First an execution legally is not a Murder. Murder is the intentional illegal killing of a Human. The key word here is illegal. If the law allows it, then it is not illegal. You may not like it, but that does not change the meaning of the word.

A judicially sanctioned execution is not a murder.

Second, my counter thought is "no innocent person should ever die as the result of the illegal actions of another.

This of course includes those who profit from the sale of drugs and thereby cause deaths and suffering. Acknowledged it takes two to tango, but when one walks away with money in their pocket while the other one dies, something is wrong with a system allowing that.

Regarding the fact a smuggler was caught going out instead of coming in. What difference? The crime is having the quantity he did while inside Indonesia. What his intent was after acquiring them illegally or in another place is immaterial. He was in Indonesia when he had it. That is all that is important. Kill him and be done with it so he can never do it again. Of course the flip side is also true. Execute the one who gave it to him too. Also the person who gave it to that person, etc. All the way up the chain, and also include whoever got the monies.

The other 20 topics or side bars raised, I will let someone else write to them, if they wish to spend the time.

RE: Advising a younger guy -

LoL, now there is a false supposition if I ever heard one.
I am not looking. Indeed even my profile says so. <Of course if Miss Right rings my doorbell, that's a different kettle of fish.>

Okay 'small' social groups. Maybe he should join a church group for singles? Some of the bigger churches host such mixers.

But of course until we get to the cruxt of what it is he does or doesn't do that keeps the dates in non-romantic mode, meeting the next one is a waste of time. It is obvious either something about how he selects the ladies he fixates on, or something about what he is doing or saying on the dates is the problem.

There is also the big, big question of why he keeps asking out the same women who cut him no slack? Why does he keep calling a woman who says no?

I am totally unable to see myself spending more than 5 or 6 times with a woman who says no, even to a goodnight kiss, but then again, I am not in that country so maybe all the women in Scotland say no (and I note it in my mental refernce card and would totally cross the women of Scotland off my list, were I actually looking).

RE: Advising a younger guy -

Well if we discount web sites and also 'social groups' we just threw 80% into the trash. I mean even getting a hobby and going to a meeting about that hobby is a social group. We seem to have thrown out bars and clubs too, so what exactly is left as a meeting place?

RE: Volcanoes

Yes, I posted about the recent mapping of the second magma chamber under the first in Forums. It is large enough to fill the Grand Canyon 11 times over.

RE: Volcanoes

In a word, yes.

I have already made my evacuation plan for a Yellowstone event. I figure I will have about 3 days tops to get it done. After that things will get dark and cold and the highways too clogged.

Suggest a peek at the Harry Turtledove novels dealing with the aftermath of a Yellowstone event. He may not be that far off.

The Yellowstone event is high on FEMA's top ten list. Of course it competes with a New Madrid Earthquake event. It is possible either event could also trigger the other, in which case things will be rather messy.

My prayers and best wishes

I am pleased to report that after 10+ anxious hours my friend has managed to reach her family in Kathmandu and they are well and uninjured. Their house is cracked but still standing which is better than some of their neighbors homes. There have been many aftershocks, so they are spending the night with thousands of others outside. Near the river, they are a little cold (it's about 10C outside there), but they have food, plenty of lumber laying around for a fire and some food and warm clothes my friend's brother ran inside the house and got. So for right now at least all is well for that family.

There exists of course an immediate need for about 100,000 cold weather tents in Nepal. Said need will probably not be filled before the crisis period is over.

The first military C-130s carrying aid have begun to arrive at Kathmandu.

RE: Powerful earthquake rocks Nepal......

There is a live update webpage at

As much more detailed than the public news media. It is night now and about 12 Celsius. Most are outside as aftershocks continue.

Aid is enroute from India already. I believe the scale of the devastation is hinted at with China releasing the news at least 12 dead inside China.

For those outside Nepal desiring to reach folks inside, the web page above is reporting that while direct cell phone contact seems to be not achievable, Facebook is still working and many are able to get news in and out by Facebook.

My prayers and best wishes

So far the most up to date information seems to be on this website.

RE: Gullible

Why should holding a foreign passport make one immune to local laws?

RE: Powerful earthquake rocks Nepal......

It appears at this time the epicenter was almost directly under the town of Gorkha. Looking at pictures of the town on Google, I doubt much has emerged intact there and I fear many of those cliff side buildings no longer exist.

Al Jazeera is reporting a rising death toll well past the earlier Reuters number. The 9 story tall Dharawa tower had over 200 in it when it collapsed. Most of the area's ancient UNESCO World Heritage buildings took heavy damage or utterly collapsed. I have not found any news reports from the city of Pokahara. Being as far from the epicenter as Kathmandu I fear the situation is very similar, but without communication. There is an airport there, but the runway is small (about 4,000 feet) and serves small propeller type planes.

The US is dispatching a disaster response unit, but of course even in the best of times, getting to Nepal is not easy. Looking at Google maps and airport data I am thinking a leapfrog approach may be needed to get even a small amount of equipment and supplies in. The state of the bridges on the Prithvi highway are not known, and even in the best of times, that is a small land slide prone dangerous road.

As it may be several days before any assistance arrives in some areas I fear many secondary casualties may occur.

RE: Gullible

We come to more truths for travellers. Never let a stranger hold your luggage. Always double check your bags before checking them at the airport.

RE: A princess?

Nepal had a Royal family, and King Birendra was a good King, but his son's had Heroin problems. On June 1, 2001 one of his sons Prince Dipendra sent the guards away and armed with a multitude of weapons proceeded to murder the King & Queen and the rest of the Royal Family present at dinner. He himself briefly survived but soon died of gunshot wounds he somehow got later that night. Another surviving brother became King, but he was very unpopular and the people believed he and the Prime Minister had planned the murders.

A very bloody but thankfully short (China sent troops to restore order) 5 or 6 sided civil war soon began and after some were killed the few surviving members of the Nepal Royal family who had missed the dinner that night decided it was a good idea to leave the country and and disappear and they did. Currently the country is ruled by a Maoist led 7 sided coalition which has dissolved the Monarchy and declared itself to be the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

RE: YOU HAVE COME A LONG WAY

Itchy I regret anyone would write something so mean with no cause. You are not selfish (although your cat probably disagrees). Like many here, my parents are history. I understand fully what you feel and a dozen times a day I think of things I would to share with or discuss with them, and would, were they still existent. I thank providence for my parents and that they hung together as a couple. I was a handful and with hindsight I could have caused a break up. I am glad I did not. I have made many mistakes and gone through many internal changes. As I mature I find I grow more like my father in many ways.

RE: Back to routine life.

I get the overall impression you are a superb mom.

RE: Myristica fragrans

I am trying to imagine what a Nutmeg syrup would taste like..

The only use I have for nutmeg is to sprinkle it on an egg nog, the kind made with raw eggs, sugar and milk.

RE: Five Things I Can Do Without

The machine is something called a Vogue Stitch with a zig zag and reverse capability.

Embedded image from another site

My wife bought it new (it wasn't cheap I was told) before I met her. It seemed to be a nice machine. She used it a fair bit when we were married and it never gave her any problems that I noticed. With hindsight, of course, I wish that I had her teach me how to use it. It is heavy and it has a cover with a lift handle for moving it around. In the years since her death there have indeed been rips in my clothes which I know, were she alive 2 minutes on the machine and the rip would vanish.

What I learned from Google is Japanese made by a company that had vanished by 1990. They had several generations of machines and this one seems to be somewhere towards the end of the line. I can presume that when new it had a manual. I am assuming the little snippet of paper my wife long ago glued to the machine's top is all she kept of the manual. So the cased machine sits in a corner and I wish I knew more. The buttons on both sides of it intimidate me from experimentation.

RE: Judas's Betrayal Of Jesus

And if he or they ever existed, He knew Judas too.

RE: Judas's Betrayal Of Jesus

RE: Profile Reviews

Solamente If someone did that they would be open to libel or slander if they did it poorly. CS if it encouraged it would be the primary money holder sued, so we understand the reason for rule 16 below.

Following rule 16 is hard sometimes. There is one person who when identified as a fake long ago, went dormant for awhile but seems to be back under a different persona complete with a new history. Yeah, sometimes one wishes to advise all and expose a nut who is a fake especially when they write hate stuff, but telling CS how we know is all we can do.

Regarding dating experiences, I am thinking you mean high school boys locker room stuff? Tales about who puts out and who doesn't? Hmmm, I was brought up with the rule a gentleman never tells. Interestingly enough I found out once the women knew I wouldn't, it worked out surprisingly well for me. laugh

RE: barriers

I find the ladies want us to be able to financially provide and handle things with numbers well. No disrespect, but you have two #4s in your list above. There should only be one. Perhaps, that goes with 'written ability,' but I would if I used numbers also invent a rule #8 (since you will probably re-number) about always use good numbering form or something similar.

#3 applies both on and off CS.

Your second #4 is my biggest problem.

#6, yeah, sometimes. When that happens we try to explain. If they don't accept it, just shrug your shoulders and go onto someone else. Plenty of others sit here for all.
