RE: Chavez threatens to cut off oil to the US, what should the US do?

Is there such a thing as unbiased tv?

Chavez has done a lot for Venezuela and his style appeals to the poor and the working classes, though his critics insist that he has not fulfilled his election promises and corruption is rife in the government.

I agree with much of the ideology he believes in, but he is becoming a Socialist Dictator and is obsessed with his own media image making him appear a clown at times, hence my reference to King Juan Carlos..."porque no te calles"??!! If you haven't seen the incident check out:

In actual fact Chavez has been reducing, in particular, military ties with the USA for a few years now preferring to buy weapons from other countries such as Spain, Russia and China so the latest threat shouldn't be such a surprise.

RE: Chavez threatens to cut off oil to the US, what should the US do?

Errr no, Chavez is a bully and not too intelligent.

In answer to the OP, set King Juan Carlos of Spain onto him, he knows to deal with little bully boys! laugh

RE: Dangerous Person

Kitty there is no doubt here, you MUST report him in order to prevent another woman finding herself in the same position.

Well we do both live in Spain, maybe that aroused your suspicions!

But you are right, it does depend on the thread, but that's because each topic calls for different reactions and contributions. This of course does not prove that somebody is presenting a false image. as fireliter said we are multi-faceted and we write to suit the topic, just as in real life we behave to suit the occasion. This is not being untrue to oneself, but respecting certain codes of conduct that we've hopefully been brought up to respect.

It's good to see that many can participate in a serious thread then switch to comic mode for a joke thread but that's not really what I'm talking about here.

thumbs up Exactly, and I know that comments I've made have occasionally been misinterpreted. I also use the EU forum and with the wide range of nationalities and cultures there are bound to be misunderstandings at times. However, this is not the same as those who do seem to put forward this false image of themselves.

It all makes me a little wary and my usual trusting nature doesn't seem to be serving me well here as it does in real life. I agree that the absence of body language doesn't help as you say, making the process of getting to know somebody much more difficult and lengthier.

Please know that I am quite aware of the hazards. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.

RE: STRICTLY MEN - WOMEN KEEP OUT

I agree, I like a nice, good looking waiter with a cheeky smile on his face to serve me, but I'm not supposed to be here so......gotta go

Yes Manolito you're right, I didn't word that second paragraph very clearly. I observe for a while and I'm feeling that perhaps somebody is not the person I thought they were, then one post may confirm it for me. I continue to observe, to give the benefit of the doubt, but disappointingly nine times out of ten I do not change my opinion.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that some people portray themselves as very different to the reality and in time the lie can be seen. I am what you read and what you see, it's a waste of time and effort to pretend otherwise so I, perhaps naively, expect others to be the same.

No I'm not talking about good and bad days, I think I can recognise when somebody is just having an off day, this is about really getting to know somebody over period of time by reading their posts.

I enjoy observing more than posting in reality.

Not so much academically but the process of knowing people.

I've been here on and off for a couple of years and don't log on regularly but it amazes me that people who I initially warm to, change over a period of time before my very eyes and I end up feeling that I actually don't like that person very much anymore.

Actually I don't believe they change, but their true colours triumph perhaps in one short post and I feel that I can't be bothered to respond to their posts/threads anymore.

Like real life I suppose, but it takes a little longer and more insight to perceive it behind a computer screen, although I have to say that the reverse happens with me too, some people who I find a little obnoxious initially I have grown to like and respect despite our differences.

RE: Your Obsession!

Clean shoes/boots

RE: What is a turn-off on a first date?

Bad teeth or breath
BO
Dirty fingernails
Nasal hair
Under arm sweat patches
Dirty or scruffy shoes

Appearance is the first thing we notice so these things are important to me. If a man is shy, over confident, talks too much. too little....no problem, most of this may be down to first date nerves and I can deal with that.

Never really experienced the turn-offs in the OP fortunately.

RE: oh well part 10

Fed up with the weather and missing Spain Gilly. Didn't see that news item you mention but I know there's lots of cheap dodgy vodka here, the men on the streets fall at my feet......drunk on it laugh

I stick to wine.

RE: oh well part 10

Don't know about Aberdeen but it's cold and snowy here in Moscow.......oh well!

RE: Warning!Slightly morbid.

as

Many years ago I worked as a purchasing clerk for the local city council and I was asked to visit the crematorium to discuss their furniture requirements for the chapel. My boss had a sick sense of humour and unknown to me had arranged for me to be given a tour of the crematorium, I saw and learned things which shocked me to the core and I vowed that day that I would never be cremated.

My dilemma is that the thought of burial also gives me the heeby jeebies and a Viking burial is what I would really like......unfortunately it's not legally possible so dunno

RE: STRICTLY MEN - WOMEN KEEP OUT

Manolito you traitor!!!

Hootsie your members have been betraying you in your absence by sneaking over to the Women's Club and eating our cakes.

RE: I drink too much, I smoke too much. Does it really matter ?

Is that you Blanca????

RE: STRICTLY GIRLS ONLY - MEN KEEP OUT!

See Manolito? We will even share Smoky's delicious cakes with you, unlike you lot last night with your cognac and wine!

RE: In how many cartons fits your "life" in?

I'm trying to adopt this approach Smoky and it's becoming easier given that I spend half my life out of a suitcase. I also dislike clutter in my home, I'd hate to have all the stuff my mum has in her home

There are some things I can't throw away though, for example, my son's first homemade Easter card when he was about 4, my daughter's first birthday card to me with her own little verse inside made at playschool. They put so much love and effort into making those cards.

Dumped the wedding album quite easily though.....after 2 years!

Now I feel a little emotional!

RE: STRICTLY GIRLS ONLY - MEN KEEP OUT!

Hootsie is going to be so disappointed in you laugh

RE: STRICTLY GIRLS ONLY - MEN KEEP OUT!

Conrad get out!!! You've got your own boys club and I believe it's film night....Hootsie has chosen a neat documentary about fashion on the golf course. and how to choose the perfect caddie.

The brandy is cheap though!

RE: STRICTLY MEN - WOMEN KEEP OUT

It's boring here anyway, I'm leaving. ...c'mon Smoky! Too much cigar smoke and leather upholstery, and what's with the animal heads on the wall over there? Creepy!!!

RE: STRICTLY MEN - WOMEN KEEP OUT

Got a ciggy Smoky? Do you like my new trousers? I thought chocolate brown was better than black, too many pairs of black trousers in my wardrobe. Hootsie! 2 glasses of wine over here please, what are you all talking about over there?
