Interesting thread. I teach business Engish and find this fascinating.
Simple things such as greetings, socialising and offering business cards are so different depending on the culture you are dealing or negotiating with.
In the past, American businessmen/women were the worst offenders, often explained in the text books by a singular arrogance that America was the best in the world (don´t jump on me good Americans) therefore didn´t need to possess nor practise cultural awareness.
The Japanese have very strict codes of conduct and are easily offended by their Western counterparts.
I don´t think so. The dates I´ve had have all been with non forum participants.
The forums are good, don´t get me wrong, but we all seem to become friends, or like brothers and sisters afer a period of time, and that romantic interest disappears, despite the half-hearted flirting which goes on.
I think this just proves that physical chemistry is so important.
If you meet somebody in a bar for example, you are initially attracted to the look, later that may of course change if the character doesnt match up. However, here we may spend ages communicating and think we have something, yet when we meet, it´s a big disappointment. Not just because there is no physical chemistry, but also because the written word or telephone communication is poles apart from face to face contact.
I would much rather meet somebody in real life, see firsthand what´s on offer then make my mind up later as to whether this person is a good match, than make my mind up first, based on virtual communication,as we do on dating sites, then meet and be sorely disappointed.
I don´t believe so. If the initial interest/spark, whatever you choose to call it, isn´t there, I doubt it will ever be.
I´ve had several online dates, and never agreed to a second date, because I knew that there was no point. Harsh maybe, and I´m not saying they were all really bad, but there was just no ooomph!
I´m truly envious, not jealous, and of you too kissme, you both seem to have found what I, and I´m sure many here wish or hope for.
I´m not really looking, because I doubt that I can find what I would like here, and fortunately I have a real life which is fulfilling and happy,(with dates too!) but it is heartwarming to read about success stories,
I was thinking the same thing actually. but that´s the nature of the game here. Some people, no offence Ambrose, get away with saying almostth e exact same thing as others, who curiously are rewarded with a backlash.
If you´re popular here you can get away with anything, and that has nothing whatsoever to do with how a thread is posed, before people say it´s the way a thread or post is constructed.
I did that too, took regular career breaks from my boring old work as a tax inspector and advisor for the government, to travel around the world and teach English. However, I always had that safety cushion of returning to the tax office, until they decided that 4 career breaks was sufficient. Then I made the choice to resign and continue teaching. Much, much poorer, but much, much happier!
If I were to have a year off from teaching now, then I would travel around Latin America.
In all honesty, I don´t think the OP was criticising spelling mistakes, rather, asking for opinions and thoughts on the matter. I´ve already posted my thoughts, and I would agree that spelling is not the be all and end all. However, it does concern some people for different reasons, as I´ve already said. Just the same as the constant threads about whether weight is an issue.
It´s not about being finicky or picky, nor is it being rude to point out that these things are also an issue with some people.
