Ray.....Syria is not that big a deal on the global scene to warrant WWIII. What it is Russia using Assad to gain a region presence. Big deal. Russia can have all of Syria for all I care.

The same of the Aries program. Its NASA objective was to support a manned lunar base. Obama killed it to promote commerical space operations. Most of these by liberal managed companies like Space X. In effect Obama placed near Earth space, into the hand of his liberal supporters. And took it from the hands of Americans.
All of them, have decided to by-pass the moon as well. For the astriods.
But NASA and a AU researcher have found the moon's great value. NASA has found water....lots of water at the lunar poles. And a AU researcher using test soil samples from the original Apollo landings to find micro materials. These micro materials come from the millions of astriods strikes on the lunar surface.
Micro materials have great value. They are the reason that Planet Exploration is headed to mine the astroids.
It very difficult with the technologoes we have to make micro materials. 1 Oz of POSS....a micro silica....is more valuable than a Oz of gold. Here we have the massive lunar surface to mine for these materials. And President Obama and his liberal backer plan is to go to the astriod belt for them. All this is brought together, just a few months prior to the US Presidential election of 2012. Were neither pf the two running candidates are talking about it much.
I say this. Assad is just mouth piece taking orders from Moscow. He takes some small act of rebellion then harshly supresses them. Then a small revolt begins. This 16 months ago.
Then continuing to supress the Sunni, Assad forces have some atrocities and a real civil war begins. Russian and China block the UN resolutions. Iran and Russia rush in support units to Assad. Then this thing really heats up. Turkey has a F-$ shot down. NATO is advised vote to support Turkey. Both side move units to the border.
Kofi Annan UN peace plan for peace is removed and it seems a hopeless situation. Now Russia/China/Iran move naval forces into the area.
First question. How can Naval Forces determine the outcome of a land civil war in Syria? They cannot. Warship are about as much help in Syria's civil war as horse calvary with drawn sabers charge.
Second question. What do Russia and China get with Assad staying power? Syria is a 1000 miles from Russia and 5000 miles from China. Sure Russia get a MED port, Tarsus to use. But Russia has resupply vessels that can refuel and rearm the Russia MED flottila at sea.
The MED has never been what I would call a region of influence for the Chinese. Why do either really care about Assad, other than he is a major buyer of weapons. Even if the Sunni win, they can get weapons sales with the new regime. They will in Egypt.
Third question. Would Iran commit major forces into Syria's Civil war? I mean 200,000 or more. Assad is really man short. He has equipment. But not the man power to use it. If Assad is asking Russia for weapons....eg....tanks....personnel carrier ....I bet he is also asking Iran for major deployment of manpower.
But with all these naval deployments....there is more going on here. Ship in a land war are about useful as .....well a Calvary charge on water.

Dedicating them to the countries sports program at a young age. Failure or success can mean many things. In North Korea, success means a new refrigerator. Failure means the threat of a labor camp.
In the other, you have athletes trying a number of sports from a young age to select the one(s) that fits them best. Then open competition within the sport to select the best to represent the country every four years. If they are successful, they have the opportunity reap in high dollar commercial sponsorships. But not all do. Some to keep amateur status will reject the sponsorship offers. Loser can try again in four years or retire with dignity from the sport.
This stark difference between the a Communist system and a free enterprise system, is at the heart the coming economic battle between China and the United States. One a state chosen and directed activity for the person. The other a free will choice to participate in the activity. A leading US swimmer sat out 10 years of competition, last competing and winning in the Atlanta games.....only to return to these game to win a gold. Think he could do that in China or North Korea?

The population of the United States is 308m. The Unites States sent 529 athletes to the games. Each you have to admit is 'world class'. The Chinese sent 396 athletes to the games. Again each is 'world class'. The chances of being a United States Olympian is .0000017. A very low figure! The chances to being a Chinese Olympian is so low it registers zero on my calculator. It was even less!
