I am in favor of the State of Palestine, meaning, an independent and self-sustaining nation, as defined in 1948.
Until recently I favored Israel in the ongoing conflict. I believed they had a right to defend themselves, given the attacks in 1967. (You listening, Barack?) But lately I've become convinced Israel is not interesting in any lasting peace. Their recent insistence on further Jewish settlement in areas still classified as "occupied" since 1968 convinces me they don't want to be kindly neighbors.
I favor the 1948 settlement which provided for an independent State of Israel and an independent State of Palestine.
Are you suggesting, Life, that Chris Christie will be performing human sacrifices? That might play well on Fox News, but I doubt it would appeal to the all-important independent vote.
So much hand-wringing has been wasted on the Mayan's inaccurate scheduling of doom that few even remember the accurately-calculated earlier Mayan prophecy detailing exactly who will run for US President in 2016, and who will win. Here I present an abridged translation:
"The Repu(blica)n Party will have so(me?) few names that many know...the red one (Rubio?) will lead early but see his sun sink in the w...(west?) Another from afar, the name-changer (Bobby Jindal?) challenges. No one wants to see what lurks in the (bu)sh (Jeb Bush?)A man on the right (un)pops the bottle (Bob Corker?) but a man on his right (John Kasich?) drinks the wine. The sun rises in the east on the shoulders of the double-named one (Chris Christie?) and he brings the power and the glory."
"Those D(emocrats) who hold the ......(key? power?) (will) also have many names. They call the old wife (Hillary Clinton?) but the young da(ughter) answers (Kirsten Gillibrand?) They hear war upon war (Elizabeth Warren? Tim Warner?). The (man with) the double M (throws) his hat (in) (Martin O'Malley?). The sun rises in the east on the shoulders of the son of the son (Andrew Cuomo?) and he b(rings) the p(ower) and the glory."
So, the ancient Maya predicted a 2016 face-off between Democratic nominee Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Chris Christie.
They also predicted who would win. This prophecy was prefaced by an unusual note that read, "Sorr(y C)onrad, no Libertar(ian) this time." The final 2016 Presidential Mayan Prophecy revealed that Andrew Cuomo will be the next President of the United States.
Nine years difference is not so great. If you think of it in percentage terms, you will realize that it is shrinking and will continue to shrink. Right now you are about 68% his age, a difference of 32%. When he is 109 and you 100, the difference will be only 9%.
Between now and then, though, you will each pass through some predictable life-stages. You'll need to discuss those beforehand and agree how to handle them, as a couple.
I've, uh, been around the block a few times. So I have a few fond memories. One that stands out happened a year and 3 months ago, when I first took GACryptic out to dinner, at Naples restaurant down the street. We've dined at finer (and less fine) restaurants since, but what made that first one special to me was her smile.
And good for those brave and noble women. They rock! But, could I point out, Tom, that the quote from Bob Dylan that brought all this on did NOT mention military service? Only "jet pilots."
Could it be that, anyone who equates "women jet pilots" with "military service" is actually a bit behind the times themself?
No reason women can't get jobs as civilian jet pilots either, in my book.
I think we should have compulsory drug testing for elected officials.
I'm not so familiar with your Australian benefits system. Here in the US, individuals do not get any "handouts" -- those are reserved for automakers, and banks. We do have a system called Social Security, by which the elderly receive "payments." But those are no handout either; everyone pays taxes into that fund all their working life. Perhaps you mean something like the progam we have here, in each individual state, generally called "Food Stamps"? (Although actual stamps are no longer used.) Those are not payments either; they can only be redeemed for food, in a noble effort to ensure no one goes hungry just because they lost their job or had other hard luck.
In any case, "the government" is us, and it does nothing unless we collectively say so.
You just gotta get involved. CS makes it pretty easy. All those buttons at the top of your screen, that start with "My Home, Search, Mailbox..." and conclude with "My Profile, Edit Profile, Edit Photos" -- okay, maybe not those six, but basically all the ones in between offer some way to communicate with other members. Take, say, Poetry. You don't have to write poetry. You just read some, and if you like it, leave a comment saying so. Same with Blogs, Top 10 Lists, even Games. There's a chat room too - go talk with some folk. And here's the Forums, of course -- dive right in, start responding. You'll get noticed.
Of course, it takes a little time. But there are lotsa groovy people here, so it's worth the effort.
