"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Note that introductory clause, "A well-regulated militia"? No matter how you interpret it, it cannot mean "no regulation." So, the second amendment to the US Constitution clearly mandates regulation of guns.
Thanks Ooby, we're doing well as a "we," although GACryptic has just endured serious knee surgery, as you may have read elsewhere.
Personal taste always plays a role in discussion of "best" films. I was trying to balance that with the film's lasting influence and significance. Disney's Snow White is not among my own favorites, but there's little denying it created the genre of feature-length animation films.
You're right, I have still not seen Lifeboat, and I do think a list of "24 Best" ought to have Hitchcock in there somewhere. But, I targeted Lifeboat for replacement because you already had Steinbeck with The Grapes of Wrath, which gave you Henry Fonda too.
I do think your list is a real good one, as I said originally; all acknowledged classics. But with a strict limit of 24 titles, we'd have to make some hard choices. I did restrict my suggestions to films only in my own DVD collection, not some IMDb list. I suspect, for instance, that Chaplin's The Gold Rush would have been a better suggestion than Modern Times, but I haven't seen it yet. Likewise, when it comes to westerns, critical consensus is pinned on John Huston's The Searchers, with John Wayne. But I don't have that one yet either.
I'd love to debate the relative merits of each title further with you if you wish. But I don't wanna bore you or the forum-browsing public. Feel free to email if you like; you've a subject here that I'm quite keen on.
Well sure. No different from gals: some are more shy, some are less so. And some may be more or less so depending on the situation: shy and retiring in a crowd of strangers, but more open one-on-one or with a crowd of familiars. Or sometimes the other way around. Everybody's different.
Yeah exactly the same here Migsy. I meant to be helpful, but help is not what she wants. Attention is what she wants, and she doesn't wanna share, either.
So, too bad for her. Hope you're having a happy holiday season, Migsy.
And EVERYBODY can see my post, "hidden" by her, simply by clicking "SHOW" when they come to the "hidden" posts,
All I did was point out that using different languages was a test, not an offer for discussion. Others agreed. But Yessyrigg thinks that forums are her own personal playground, I guess.
Go on, everyone, have a look at what Yessyrigg thinks you shouldn't see.
This post is italian, not spanish. Few CS users are so multilingual. If you want responses, use english. If you wanna play games, go do it by yourself, in the corner. Don't pester people who would like to be helpful.
Like a lot of folk, I have to go back to work today. Doesn't bother me so much. But there's an awful lot of police, firefighters, hospital staff, power-plant workers and the like who may feel differently. They sacrifice what should be quality time with their families to serve us, the ungrateful public. Seems like a good time to appreciate those folk who DON'T get a holiday.
So, here's to all those who have to go to work today. You all rock!
Best wishes for those whose jobs don't permit holiday leave,
True enough, Jac, but it occurred to me, a decade or more ago, when I was feeling just such despair: That was the saddest part of all, knowing that I'd get over it. Knowing that devalues what you're feeling at the time. You feel such sorrow and loss! And being told (or already knowing) that you'll get over it makes it seem like, well, you stubbed your toe, it hurts, but no big deal.
No of course not. Money is a fairly recent invention in historic terms, perhaps 2,800 years old. Obviously people had love and relationships before then.
How you answer the poll depends on why you're visiting the new city, I think.
GACryptic & I will be visiting San Diego CA this spring - to visit with my brother & his wife, who moved there. So, it'll be a "new city" for both of us, but in this case "Places popular with the locals" would be the answer.
In late summer or early fall we'll be touring North Carolina. The whole itinerary's not set, but we do plan to end up in Raleigh for a couple of days. Why? The North Carolina Museum of Art. So, in that case, "Historically or culturally important places" would apply.
There's a fine line between "Tourist attractions" and "Historically or culturally important places," too. Some are worth seeing, in a "new city," but not worth repeating on return.
It's a real good list, Ooby. All are acknowledged classics. And sure, 24 is an arbitrary number. So replacing any, instead of adding more, is a challenge.
The only non-english-language film I see on your list is Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai. So, likely at least a couple choices could face international competition.
Likewise, the silent era is entirely absent.
And your list seems rather tilted toward drama. The Producers is the only pure comedy I see, and only The Wizard of Oz appears to represent both musicals and fantasy genres.
So, with all that in mind, I'd replace:
17. Double Indemnity with Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 Battleship Potemkin. (You already featured The Maltese Falcon to represent the noir-era suspense drama.)
15. Black Beauty with The Sound of Music.
19. Lifeboat with Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
22. Stand by Me with Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times.
13. The Ten Commandments with Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thief.
And just from personal preference, I'd swap The Outlaw Josey Wales for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Clever! You quote someone else's post, but manage to insult me without saying a word about my post. My, aren't you clever? Aren't you smart? You must feel so proud of yourself. Good boy!
That's all there is to it. I agree we ain't perfect. And I personally am ready anytime to discuss our faults and flaws. But that ain't good enough for some folk in Switzerland or Finland or Ireland. They wish they were here, and they ain't, so they gotta whine whine whine whine whine about how terrible we are. Well, shrug it off, and point out to them their frequent contradictions. Meanwhile, keep on rockin' in the USA.
Yeah right Migsy. You notice, he didn't respond to me calling him "scumbag" and saying he wanted women to send him money via Western Union? Oh hell no. Instead he started another thread. More of the same. The guy's a cheat and a liar and a nuisance.
Dude, Monte is exactly right. Your other posts have proven you cannot even begin to spell any of that. Once again, you are exposed as a liar and a scammer. Give it up and go away. You bore us.
Mayan prophecy: 2016 US Presidential Election
Ahh, if I had, I wouldn't be poking such sharp fun at the whole idea, would I?Oh, and turns out, this Baktun was a non-event...kinda like the Y2K scare.
