The Gamble Of Life
The play field of life is uneven. We all start with different chances, and what we do with it, determines our future. It is like a game of poker. Some start off with better hands than the others and some have better cash reserves than others. It is up to the player to improve what he holds and to use it to the best effect.
The secret is in what to hold, what to discard and when to fold. But remember that what you discard, you cannot get back, and that there is no guarantee that you will draw better cards than what you started with.
But the best hands do not always win. Very often, the player with the most confidence in what he holds is the winner. And occasionally you meet an opponent stubborn enough to throw money at it and call your bluff. Some you lose and some you win. You cannot always win.
Nor can you gain without risk and if you fold you’re out of the running but sometimes it is better to cut your losses and wait for the next opportunity. We don’t carry all our eggs in one basket.
Life has never been fair and nobody ever promised us anything different. We have to make do with what we are dealt with, take our chances and play the percentages to minimize the risk.
May you all have a wonderful day.

Never played poker. I only played joker looong time ago, and never won. That stupid joker-card somehow looved being in my hand.
Anyway, different from in gamble, in life every one could be the winner at the same time, I suppose.
Ppssst Cat! I thought it was your granddaughter who wrote a blog a while ago. But then I realized that there's a missing "i". Silly me!
I started without hair or teeth and I recovered well enough though I must admit that I'm losing some ground with the hair lately.
I made the same mistake before noticing the missing 'i'. First time I saw her, she must be new.
Bill Gates heir and the Royals look at how we, the lowly can ever grasp that kind of blow.
But like said we have a way of changing it. The problem sometimes is either we are dealt with worse by simple as luck. Or wrong calculations on how we can improve what we're dealt with. In my personal life (very true story), it was more of my strong unaltered commitment to change that took me where I am. And this is definitely a step up from my dirt poor life in the Philippines. Opportunity and determination do make the effort to be pulled out from such verdict of life. But even then we're not always lucky and worse we regressed. It happened to me many times, losing almost all that I worked for on one of the worst economic falls in our history got me one of the victims.
But the most important thing is our ability to stand back up and get beaten again, or rise up and that chance is very critical to how we deal our cards like you said.
A great blog Cat, good morning, just woke up.
Thanks again Cat.
I'd love to think so......coz I discarded a card to get another card even though I know very well that the new card would not be as good as the old card. Only attracted to the new card coz of its generosity?
I have seen poor families prosper by digging in with what they "got". Or maybe just a child. But they went with what they had!
Which brings to mind how this saying came up. And since this is a dating site I find it good advice for those looking and not finding but wondering what they can do to improve their status.
We guys used to work trade shows and this fellow Gary was moaning and trying to borrow money because he made a date with a young woman who was a vendor at the show.
Mike looked at him and said, "Dude, you gotta go with what you got"! Gary did and he ended up with the girl!
In rare cases we can get back what we have discarded but it is never really the same. Important decisions in life need to be made correctly the first time. It is not always easy but we should try. We seldom get a second chance.
Quite so. And those who climbed the ladder the hard way appreciate life more than those who got it by birth.
Regarding the last part of your comment, another truth. You don't have to throw money at a woman. If she likes you, she will be happy to share a take-away hamburger with you. It is the togetherness that counts.
I have noticed that most people living on islands prefer fish. I also like fish but prefer meat. Red meat that is.
You gotta know when to hold them. And know when to fold them.... ouch!
I'm a lousy poker player. If I'm dealt with two aces every time, I will still come out losing.
I once read that Sir Francis Drake insisted to finish his game of bowls with the Spanish Armada in sight. The truth was he could not sail, the tide was against him. Now is that not a cool head.
And know when to run.
I'm heading for the hills.
Do you play it with a loaded gun?
That reminds me of the idea of change agents...relating to my studies...you cannot change life/opportunity without risking something...engaging in life to change it for the better...not taking a back seat sort to speak!!...timing is also important...when to seize the opportunity!!...have a great day too!!
My impression too but he did go on to destroy a fleet that was thought to be invincible.
If your timing is right you get a flying start and you're halfway there.
dude! Wait For Me......
I'd be too scared to play with you.
I will never know the odds if you are going to be loading the gun.
You also want to become a hill billy?
But I am an over-the-hill billy so I will need a 2 hour start. No need to wait. you will catch up soon enough.
Thank you! But the problem is that the young people don't want to hear this. Look at the audience today. Do you see any youngsters? Nope. I'm preaching to the converted.
At this stage of my life I do not have the inclination to tackle large projects. Right now I enjoy life for what it is. Maybe I shall feel different next year this time.
What we make out of life is what is important, no matter what is thrown on someone.
What more can I add to that?
I'm not going to let anyone bluff me out of this once in a lifetime hand.
people who moan and complain are simply gossiping about themselves.
How dare you challange the hand of GOD....
Any way, it is lala time for me.
1 AM looming.
But of course you can have a beer. Here have some. It is free.
