Alligator Skin (4 u mom)

She has courage so she stands tall
She is a rock, she is a wall
She's got faith that never waivers
She's got skin like an alligator

She's unbreakable, she's impervious
Years of constant struggle made her this
And look at what circumstances gave her
She's got skin like an alligator

How you may ask, could she withstand
What would surely defeat the common man?
But she never let her dark days break her
She's got skin like an alligator

For she has seen all that she has loved
Taken from her even flesh and blood
And yet she smiles she's no complainer
She's got skin like an alligator

To hope, to believe how could she dare
With haters and naysayers everywhere
Well she's got faith, and she says favour
She's got skin like an alligator

To be black and a woman one things for sure
It's the reason for hardships she has endured
She says love prevails cuz love is greater
She's got skin like an alligator

And for all her efforts and tireless labour
They still owe, they never paid her
One day maybe they'll appreciate her
No matter, she's got skin like an alligator.

J & Roo

The miles are long between us
so unfair you are so far,
but my love will brave the distance-
endless miles to where you are.
I cherish all the pictures,
hold you both inside my heart.
You and baby live with me
though we are far apart.
The past is done, live for today
I'm there for you forever.
Remember through the bad and good,
My love will leave you never.

About this poem:
A poem I wrote on Mothers Day this year...I had this idea on that day about organising a project (obviously it will have to be for next year hopefully) where we can adopt a mom for a day .. I know for sure there are moms or wives who don't get fussed about let alone remembered on Mother's Day ... hence the poem ;-)

A birthday wish for Nu

Nuwahri had me hushed
To never make a fuss
I like going the extra mile
For the people in my life!
But I held myself back
I did nothing as asked
And it made me feel quite bad!

Friends and family

Sitting in the sun !
Having me some fun !
Haven't been home for a year!
Lots of tears we shared !
Now it's time to cheer !
I'm even drinking a beer !
All the friends that use to be
Are here for all to see !
How much we've aged
I remember when we would sit out front
Getting drunk !
Some are still the same !
What can I say ?
It doesn't change the past !
For we always had a blast !
We all sit here and share our favorite stories !
And many memories too!
Some even pull out old pictures!
Oh the laughs we share!
Nothing could compare !
A few have passed away !
All were remembered today!
I will go to the cementary
Visit my mother and my father
Thank them each for a special gift !
My mother I will thank for giving me my brothers !
My father I will thank for loving another's children !
It's been 20 years since I moved away !
The deep love I have for my friends and family
Still feels the same to this day!
Here's to another glorious day!

In Their Shadow.....

My prayer today for parents true,
Decent people to their core,
Resting 'neath a shady yew,
Safe with God, their worries o'er.
Sad verses penned, with gulping tears,
A poignant anniversary,
How swiftly pass the ebbing years,
Since they became a memory.
Dad was strict, poor behaviour banned,
While Mam was kind, I reminisc,
Imprinted on my rear, the palm of his hand,
Embedded on my cheek, her gentle kiss.
They raised us right, all brothers three,
Tight rules and respect abounded there,
Each night we said.."The Rosary"
Kneeling beside a kitchen chair.
Times were hard, but they'd seen worse,
Poverty ne'er our lives impede,
. Love was abundant, while money scarce,
Though financially poor, we were wealthy indeed.
A mark of respect, a word of thanks,
They prepared us well for future life,
Those welcome hugs, and well deserved spanks,
A magical cure for sibling strife.
Fond thoughts today of good instilled,
Such dedication of parents strong,
A celebration of lives fulfilled,
Forever in their shadow, we journey on.
We feel them now, their presence still,
Behind the stars, quietly peeping,
Alive in memory, and always will,
They have not died, just softly sleeping.
The trials of life they fought and won,
We're grateful now eternally,
For all the blessings that first begun,
In our simple Irish family !

About this poem:
Our parents lived united into their eighties,
Both dying within a few months of each other.

Dad (Mick) would say.....
"Society has taken away "the slap"....
But replaced it with nothing !"

Mam ( Maggie ) would say.....
"Entice birds to your garden
they bring smiles.....
and smiling is a cheap way to
improve your looks."

God bless them both !
