I like "House" Don´t ask me why, I don´t watch much tv really.
Most of my friends and students are doctors, or in the medical profession, and they tell me that a lot of the stuff on this programme is hogwash, yet I still watch it when I can.
I also watch "Cold Case" sometimes and get a bit teary eyed at the usual ending.
There is a Spanish serial I love though, "Cuéntame cómo pasó". It´s about a family, and is set just before and after the death of Franco.
People try to be kind generally which is why we may tell "white" lies in order not to hurt someone.
It is completely different to invent an online persona and not be true to oneself on a dating site, simply to gain brownie points, which as I see it, many people do here.
It´s not about playing down or denying our assets, but being truthful in most of the questions asked in the threads here.
Even negative points can be made into positive ones if you think about it.
For example, a job interview. A question often asked is " What are your weaknesses?" The clever answer is to be truthful, and then say what you have done or are doing to improve or deal with the weakness.
Being truthful doesn´t have to be a bar to starting a relationship, as many seem to believe....the opposite in my opinion.
I believe the word "scamming" is over-used. The strict definition is "someone who swindles another by fraud OR deception".
Yes there are scammers out to fleece people, but there are also people who are scammers by virtue of the fact they lie and are deceptive on these forums.
Which is worse? I suppose it depends on who you ask.
Yes Tom, but the hidden sugar, not just artificial incidentally, is not only in "diet" foods. All processed foods lack natural flavour, so sugar AND salt is often added.
I read perhaps 90% of posts saying they would never do this or that. Really, do all these people expect others with a smidgeon of intelligence to believe they are ALL single because they are so perfect?
Of course there are exceptions, but such a majority of the members here? Where are all the "bad" people?" Don´t they join dating sites too?
A little more honesty would be appreciated in my opinion, rather than false self promotion.
This is interesting, but not news. I gave up artificial sweeteners back in the late eighties when it was first suggested that they could cause cancer. I only ever used it in my tea then. Now I drink unsweetened tea and coffee.
I have always disliked soda drinks too, with sweeteners or otherwise, so I have never drunk them, and like you I use unrefined sugar or honey when necessary.
People should also be aware of hidden sugar or artificial sweeteners in processed and tinned foods.
Good grief! Is it a test? You try your best to get your date into bed in order to fail your test if she does or pass if she refuses?
Why even try to entice your date into your bed if you think so poorly of women who comply on the first date? That´s just selfish, and you are acting in the same way......no, actually worse than your date if she agrees to sleep with you.
You´re in a relationship anyway aren´t you? That being the case, you no longer have to apply your silly rules.
Having moved many times, and around the world, it´s been virtually impossible to retain anything except my clothes and suitcases.
However, I have always kept photos of family, ex students, friends etc, along with Mothers Day or Birthday cards made for me by my children when they were young.
Now that I´m settled in Spain, my personal belongings are accumulating in the knowledge that I probably won´t have to give them up, but I still have little that I would hate to part with.
I like change, and few material things hold any great sentimentality for me.
I don´t really know what that says about me though.
Simple Pat. English is the International language, as French was in the distant past.
Europeans generally learn English, amongst other languages, at an early age so the EU forums are jam packed with excellent non-native English speakers.
You´ll find that many Europeans speak a number of languages, unlike Americans, and sadly the Brits, because they are too lazy to bother, particularly as they know they can travel all over the world and usually find they can speak in their native English.
Great...Proficiency! There´s no higher English language qualification than CPE.
IELTS is normally taken by University entrants in English speaking countries, though there are some businesses who require an IELTS score. However, as I said, CPE is the best and recognised by ALL employers worldwide.
I´ll send you a message so that you can contact me if you need to.
TOEFL is more recognised if you want to work in the US, personally I don´t like it, and don´t think it is the best exam to truly demonstrate a high level of English, though I do prepare some students here in Spain for it.
If you want any info on Cambridge exams mail me. I´m also an examiner for Cambridge.
