The ability of a man and a woman to be friends is important, as when a married couple get into their old age, they will rely more and more on the things that hold them together as friends. Common interests and family friends.It may be more difficuilt in youth when feelings tend to be on turbo!. I am middle aged myself and think that making female friends is important, as long as both parties know where they stand. Where this falls down is where one party feels something more than the other.

Something you could add to the list is the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Yes it has romance but it isn't all that sappy. I enjoyed it and I know some people are going to say "oh well that's because you're a metro." No that's not it.

This is a difficult one and not sure how to word it...have been in this kind of relationship with a girlfriend. What you say is psychological.Hmmmm...and might these guys call themselves 'nice guys' too? Or even 'nice girls?' When people 'behave' out of character it was/is due to what? Provoked, stress, means to an end, conditionong, domination, jealousy, out of love?? Yes, get the hell out wheteher it be a male or female in this controlling relationship and do not get a puppy or decide to have a baby thinking that will resolve/calm/alter/change the controlling behaviour for it WILL not. It will only escalate. As painful as it may well be to leave, do so and pay heed to what just happened so it may never happen again. You'll be a stronger person for it.

Great article and comments.Something a controlling man is good at doing (especially if their very intelligent) is making you feel ugly...like the article said it begins "innocently". For example, you come from the ladies after freshening up with a little more lip stick and blush, only to return to the controlling person who greets you with a lukewarm comment: "Had a good make-up session?" (add sarcastic glare and flat loveless tone)

Great article. You obviously gave the topic some thought. Your viewpoints are well taken.Your views are from the male perspective, which is ok. Of course a lot of what you wrote could also apply to females. Women also play the field. They have mastered the art very well. If we were to do a poll of most females over 40, married or not, and ask them how many 'friends' they had before they got to that age - one would be surprised. Women are not stupid. They know exactly what they want. The reason they go for men who are 'players' is because they like what they see and feel. However, if they have 'bad' ways and are dropped, it is not the mans fault. Of course 'Pick up artists' do not make good long term partners.
I have met a few pick up artist females, masqurading as players. They really don't want to settle down. They like the club hopping and the free drinks. That has stopped a little since the advent of date rape drugs. They also like the quick lay, because that is what gives them the most thrills. Need I go on?

Male askes Female in a pub iff she wants a drink , both just met as strangers in pub etc ,, Male a bit of a pratt , loud, gods gift , sleasy , boring ,, then asks female iff she wants a drink ,, ( female in safe company with her friends he in his Male company } she refuses as she thinks he"s a toss pot and on the pull for anything ,, she politely refuses but gives in after his obsessive wont take no for an answer campaign ..After she has finished and bored with said person , leaves the pub with her friends ,, Male for some reason then thinks because he hasnt even been given her telephone number has been used ,, some Male logic or something

I have no problem with un-gorgeous women. Some of them make the best friends because they are not as stuck up on their looks. The issue is: what are best friends? Best friends are those who share a lot in common and like to be around each other. Sxx is a very enticing option between such friends. One has to decide that sxx is not an option in the friendship. Some say this would limit the friendship, but one has to decide what type of friend they are looking for.
